American Classics: Kringle

Kringle is so addictively delicious! My friend orders them from Racine Danish Kringles (www.kringle.com) for my Christmas present every year. They disappear by that evening. I can't help myself. Every time I walk by it on the counter, I cut off another little chunk. It's gone in an hour.

Bake the Book: 'Momofuku Milk Bar'

Buttery breads, pastries involving more toffee, caramel and fruits than chocolate, and lots of teas. The kind of bakery that isn't crazy hot inside, has sidewalk seating outside, and big communal tables. And pie!!

Alternately, an Asian bakery with all the weird little goodies I crave like Taiwanese street food buns, breads, and steamed yummies!

Perceived Food Passion vs. Actual Food Passion

I don't agree that a person who is passionate about food, but rarely cooks is to be lambasted. I love everything about food, but I eat in restaurants more than I cook. I know if something is delicious, and I love to read about food, but I leave the actual creation up to the experts. I don't see any problem with this. I also love beautifully crafted clothes and shoes, but I don't think I need to sew my own clothes or learn how to cobble to appreciate them. I love music, but not the sound of my own singing. I admire people who are passionate about cooking, but my minimal cooking experience shouldn't exclude me from being passionate about food itself or shame me for expressing an interest in food.

A Look at Olympic Provisions, Oregon's First USDA-Approved Salumeria

I actually had to start making a midweek trip to the farmer's market because I would finish the salamis from the Saturday trip (in one day) and couldn't wait another three days. I've tried several varieties and they're all amazing. I've never had cravings for other foods like I do now for Olympic Provisions, and I've been pregnant. I'm actually sorry to have read this post because now I'm hankering for the Alsace and Rioja...

Wisconsin-themed appetizers/snacks/drinks?

Depending on your timeline and budget, you can order frozen custard from Culver's or the dairy at UW. I'm pretty sure you can get a lot of WI treats shipped to you -- I've done it before for Christmas presents.

Wisconsin-themed appetizers/snacks/drinks?

I wish I was hosting a Wisconsin-themed baby shower, but alas, I'm hosting a plain old baby shower this August.

I'm voting for fried cheese curds, brats, kringle (a fantastic pastry akin to a danish ring), and this great popcorn that's a mix of caramel and cheddar popcorn. Maybe the ice cream cake could be frozen custard in the shape of Bucky Badger? Oh, how I miss Wisconsin...

bun in oven

During my first trimester, I ate a lot of apple sauce and pear sauce from Trader Joes. The unsweetened single serving cups were great to keep something in my stomach. I was really sensitive to strong smells, taste, and oiliness, so fruit and pudding was good. Also, it's not as gross when it eventually came back to haunt me. I also did ok with astringent broths like veggie "pho". Ginger candy and ginger ale helped. The iron in the prenatal vitamins really did me in, so my OB had me switch to kid's Flintstones for a while. Mazel tov!

People, people.....a potluck saga!

I have a lot of the same pet peeves as listed above, but my particular gripe has to do with weird behavior from hosts. I know a couple who like to throw parties/potlucks, but manage to use the occasion to stock their pantries. If someone brings a nice bottle of wine or two, they will thank the person graciously, then "disappear" into the garage. It turns out they always stashed whatever booze people brought and served Two-Buck Chuck, etc. Also, if there is food left over, they will package all the leftovers up in their fridge and give people back the empty (but dirty) dishes. Strange, and definitely offputting.
