Why Can't You Get a Good Slice Outside New York City? 'Wired' Magazine Says It's the Water

I disagree with the water theory. The best pizza I have had outside of NYC was in North Carolina - two brothers who moved down from the bronx to open up a place. It's how you make it as well as the ingredients.

Not great quality, but you can get them as a menu item at Hooters.

Greek Eats

When I first moved to my new town and had temporary housing by work, there was a (unfortunatly long since gone) place on my way walking from work to the hotel. Rack of lamb with salad and all of the trimmings was only $12.00. With an appitizer only $20. The rack was a full rack - I don;t know how they did it for that price. Anyway - that was where I spent my per diem every day - with plenty of leftovers for breakfast and lunch. After the first week they had it ready for me every week night so I could eat it at the temporary apartment (I don;t like eating alone in public and my wife at the time who was not here was very paranoid)

Recommended Chinese Cookbooks?

An old standby for me was "1001 chinese recipies" -
I had to purchase a paperback of it when it was re-released because my mother would not part with her copy.

Time for a Drink: Marconi Wireless

The best thing is that if you drink applejack the odds are that you will not get a hangover. A trick I learned form some older commercial glass blowers.

Roast Duck

I *always* do duck in a smoker - takes a while, but comes out great.
Usually use apple or mesquite.

Pressure cookers....do you use one?

Fried Chicken, not much else.

Cheese Budget? How much money do you spend per week on cheese?

Culvers better than Kopps? Heathens!
I live in River Hills directly between Kopps and a Culvers. I can always get into the Culvers, but there are many times when Kopps is full. Kopps IMHO has slightly better service than the local Culvers, so I think I am in the majority in this area :)

There is a gal that works for a software vendor that grew up locally in Wisconsin but is now in Texas. Any time one of the people comes up from her new home in Dallas, If they don;t come back with a couple of quarts of Kopps they aren't allowed in the building without getting a major blast from her. One time I couldn't get to Kopps in time to get fresh and sent Culvers. I was on her s**t list until the next shipment.

They've had them for years at Penguin Drive-in in Charlotte NC. They're served with a spiced mayo type of dip - very tasty.

I've been eating them all of my life! They were always on the Toot's menu in Murfreesboro, TN. Best ones in Orlando are at Jocakamo's New Orleans Kitchen!

Side note: I only like the chips. I've had the fried spears several times and they miss out on the crunch factor and tend to get soggy quickly.

Though they do have them at Cheeseburger in Paradise, they are not very good. They don't use the right batter, so they come out gritty somehow. But here in GA, there are plenty of places serving them up--Fox Bros BBQ being my favorite so far, but I have heard good things about the ones at The Glenwood.

I love May festival season. There are fried pickles at Toad Suck Daze, but that's winding down right this minute. But I think I can manage a jaunt up to Atkins for a less congested festival.

What I want to know is whose pickles are they using? The Atkins pickle plant has (sadly) closed.

And it's not like preferring fried okra to popcorn is a bad thing.

My mother, my daughter, a friend of ours, and I go to Hooters every week for a good helping of fried pickles. We LOVE them. Their dipping sauce for their fried pickles is top notch. We love HOOTERS fried pickles!!

The Best Frozen Custard

As a Wisconsinite I have to say that Kopps tops the list of the world's greatest custard. I have never ever been disappointed with any of the custard I have eaten there. I have traveled all over this great nation and sampled frozen custards from anywhere I could find it. Kopps is tops.

If you're in Western PA, check out Glen's Custard in Springdale. They have the original custard machines from the thirties, still in working condition and producing their custard every day. Wonderful stuff-- I grew up on it!

Which City Has the Best Pizza?

This is all really silly. Pizza is Pizza. I don't care what kind it is, Pizza is just plain fun to eat, and what's wonderful about it, is that there are so many different styles out there. It has a lot of variety, and I totally dig that about pizza. It is singly my favorite fast food. Whether you are from Chicago (Which I am), New York or Italy, at it's core is a fun food to eat. I absolutely love Deep Dish Pizza, like Gino's East, but I don't eat that all the time. I actually also like thin crust pizza's and generally I think most Chicagoans eat thin crust more often than not. I've had pizza in New York and although the flavors are different, it's still very good. If nothing else, it has the novelty of being new. I've always liked the fact that when you order a whole pizza in new york, it comes in pie shaped slices. Here, we do the square shaped slices, producing more pieces. The deep dish pizza is my favorite style, because you are just stuffed by it. The crust is so thick and crunchy that it's a major part of the experience. They tend to be monster sized, but two slices of that, small slices, will fill you up completely. They also use very fresh produce, producing what I've always thought were exceptionally flavorful pizza. To me this is pointless to make it a contest, because pizza is meant to be shared and enjoyed. Instead of focusing on the "who's best" angle, I'd rather appreciate the fact we are so lucky for the large variety of styles out there. Pizza is never boring because of this variety we all get to enjoy really good pizza anywhere we go. I'm sure New Yorkers can appreciate our thick crust pizzas.

Spanikopita, hands down. Lots of work, which I freeze (just finished 25 rolls for Thanksgiving) and there is no denying it is worth all the time. lolly
