Have You Switched to Summer Beer?

Bell's Oberon is one of my absolute summer favorites. It's a true sign summer is on it's way (which, in Michigan, can be questionable at times).

Cook the Book: 'The Gourmet Cookie Book'

One of my all time favorite cookies are these chocolate ones my mom makes at Christmas each year. They taste like wonderful brownies, but have a crunchy edge and slightly chewy center. Not too sweet but a wonderful chocolate flavor. Yum!

Poll: When Did You Learn How to Cook?

My mom taught me how to bake when I was really little and it just grew from there. Both me and my brother spent a lot of time hanging out in the kitchen while mom (or dad) cooked and I think it then became something natural to help with. I'm so glad it worked out that way because both me and my brother LOVE to cook now and see it as a really social sort of thing.

Video: Pomeranian Puppy Really Wants Food

If it was my dog, I'd probably be really annoyed that he/she was begging for food, but since it's a video and Pomeranian puppies are RIDICULOUSLY cute, I'll let it go ;)

Guide to Essential Kitchen Hand Tools, Part 3

I agree with the wine key, but the rest don't really strike me as essential.

Are There Foods You Can't Keep In The House?

Chips, particularly tortilla chips and that flourescent, totally synthetic nacho cheese (oh, the shame!). Also, salt and vinegar chips, particularly the really crunchy ones.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 116: A Bite-by-Bite Rundown of My Calorie Intake

What about sodium? It looks like a lot of the meals could be high in salt and that can cause some water retention, especially if you have some salty meals each day. Just a thought.

Grass Fed: The Case for Veggie Burgers

This fits what I like to call the "Gardenburger Theory." The Gardenburger theory is that we tend to be disappointed by substitutes (such as veggie burgers, white chocolate etc.) when we expect the substitute/replacement to taste just like the 'real' thing. If we can just appreciate the substitute (or veggie burger, as it is in this case) for being its own entity, then they're easier to like for what they are, not for what they're trying to be. Of course some things have no replacement and I'm afraid I still can't like any of those bacon substitutes, even when applying the Gardenburger theory. Bacon is just good as is.

What is your foolproof, fallback dessert?

I think it's technically called "Icebox Cake" but all it is is Nabisco's "Famous Chocolate Wafers" (find them by the ice cream in the grocery store or by the cookies) layered with homemade whipped cream. It's sort of like an oreo cake, but so much better. Cover with more whipped cream, chill and slice on a diagonal. Easy and delicious!

What food(s) did you love as a kid and now can't stand?

I used to love fake Mac & Cheese (sorry Kraft) probably because my mom refused to buy it. Now I find it rather gross and much prefer mac and cheese made from scratch with good pasta and lots of real, fresh cheese.

Irish Soda bread. My mom taught me, but somehow it's still best when she makes it. I look forward to making some for St. Patrick's Day!

Cook the Book: The Essence of Chocolate

I was in Paris and got to share bottomless chocolate mousse with my brother. It was some of the best mousse I've ever had in my life (and an astounding quantity of it!)
