From Behind the Bar: Desert Island Drinks

Great question!

I'm a big fan of English ciders - Addlestone's cloudy is a favorite.

As for liquor? Typing this feels embarrassing: a well-made margarita with reposado tequila (Don Julio, Revelucion, or Milagro Select Barrel).

From Behind the Bar: Weathering the Storm

Luckily, NYC didn't take the same hit that Connecticut took. Much of the state has been in the dark for 5 days...and it's looking like it'll be much longer before it's restored, especially in Fairfield County. It's funny, because we're practically neighbors, too. I do agree that the power of community increases twofold in times like these - people want to connect and help each other out, for whatever reason. Times change, but humans don't that much, when the conveniences and comforts of modern life are stripped away, you know?

Wonderful post.

What's Your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?

Ba Da Bing. It's a local specialty here in Newtown, CT! Chocolate ice cream with bittersweet chocolate chunks and bing cherries. It's like the hot older sister of Cherries Garcia.

The Crisper Whisperer: Garlic Scape Tart

Isn't that teff crust fantastic? I discovered teff while we were testing Anna Thomas's grain recipes here at Fine Cooking, and I've been smitten ever since. What a brilliant way to use it!

Kids Welcome: Malagueta

I love this place! Their sangria is off the hook, too. All I need from Malagueta is fried yuca + sangria, and I'm set...glad it's kid-friendly too, though!

A Sandwich A Day: The Braised Braciole at Rubirosa

Agree with tonisan9's point! My family rolls bacon, pecorino romano, a healthy dose of salt +black pepper, and fresh parsley in thinly pounded flank steak, ties it up, browns it on all sides, and then puts it in our Sunday sauce, along with meatballs and sausage. But quite seriously, EVERY family recipe is different. In fact, my grandma would probably faint if anyone mentioned putting breadcrumbs in braciole.

That said, there's no right or wrong answer! This looks amazing.

Lunch To-Go: Birdbath

Wish I still lived in that neighborhood...I moved out just before Birdbath expanded there! That salad looks phenomenal--right up my alley for a summery day.

Corner Slice: Southwest Corner of Washington Square Park

I second your disdain for the crab/artichoke slice...there's nothing about it that appeals to me.

The Grandma Slice, though? One of my favorite college drunk eats. I love it. Good choice!

no, i'm an employee after interning there for free over 3+ years, thanks. did i come off as bragging?? i didn't mean to at all. but i've heard opinions from my coworkers and i've definitely done my research.

i'm just open to all sorts of ideas, especially on a subject that's constantly evolving. it's amazing what you learn from asking people what they think.

From A Hamburger Today

A Sinfully Bad Burger at Cloister Cafe in the East Village

cloister cafe is only good for inexpensive drinks and a hookah with friends. it's more of a place to go during your first two years at either cooper union or NYU, not really a place to eat. i've been many times for late night wine/hookah with friends and haven't even bothered to look at the menu - it's like ordering a hot dog at Bar None - it gives me the heebie jeebies.

i applaud your bravery, Nick!
