Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Korin Knife

a little lame, but i love my paring knife.

i'd love the rest of my knives more, but i'm in bad need of a knife sharpener.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage, Chicken, and Steaks

currently it's Fox Bros BBQ in Atlanta, GA, although my favorite style of barbecue is western carolina with the vinegar sauce. mmmmm.

Eyewitness Booze Investigation: Four Loko vs. Crunk Juce

The reason it is spelled 'Juce' is probably because (the name, at least) seems like a blatant rip-off of Lil' Jon's energy drink, Crunk Juice, of which i have fond memories from college (not proud, but fond...)

A Sandwich a Day: Thai-Inspired Lemongrass Pork Bánh Mì at Tyson Bees in Philadelphia

tried this for the first time last week. outstanding. Also recommend their pork bun. It was voted best appetizer at a recent food festival.

Cook the Book: 'The Just Bento Cookbook'

the real question should be what WOULDN'T i put in a bento? i love maki's blogs and can't wait to try recipes in her book. A lot of them are things i learned from my mom and grandma that i love having in a bento like gobo kinpira and okonomiyaki. One of my favorites is okowa!

Serious Heat: 10 Things to Do with Kimchi

KimE11 - Where in the south do you live? Kimchi is easy to come by in Atlanta, even in regular chain grocery stores. It is probably the same in other larger cities, although you may have to venture into more Korean neighborhoods.

Cook the Book: 'Mary Mac's Tea Room'

I grew up in different parts of the south, and i must say that one of my favorite guilty pleasures is fried dill pickles - but they absolutely must have cornmeal breading. otherwise, it's an abomination.

From Recipes

Sunday Brunch: Chai Tea Cupcakes

I made these for a coworker's birthday today with cream cheese frosting...really delicious! The batter is a little heavier than normal cupcakes, a little in between a cupcake and a muffin. Next time i make these i'll probably try using a bit more cake flous than regular flour.

Cook the Book: 'The Best Soups in the World'

I love bisques of all sorts, but the best soup i ever had was probably a tortilla soup on a work trip...i can't even remember the city at this point. It was in a light, clear broth with fresh diced jalapenos that gave it a wonderfully fresh kick. I've tried in vain to reproduce it...

Cook the Book: 'New Classic Family Dinners'

My mom used to make what we called 'cub scout casserole', which was basically a chili and fritos casserole...not the healthiest thing in the world, but boy did we love it!

Other than that, we used to wait in anticipation to go to my grandmother's house where she'd always make us sushi! It didn't matter what the occasion was. She always made 3 types - tamago, inarizushi, and one that was a combo of smoked fish, shiitake, pickled gourd, beni shoga, and i'm sure some other stuff.

Meat Lite: Potato Crusted Sausage, Leek and Spinach Quiche

i made a vegetarian version of this (mushrooms instead of sausage), and thought it was quite good. I had some leftover filling and potato as well, so i made mini quiches in a muffin tin. Those were also great and a good size to take for lunch.

Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'

one of my favorite things to cook, meatless or meatful, is tofu, spinach, and shiitake mushrooms flavored with garlic, soy sauce, and sesame oil. yum!

Cook the Book: '660 Curries' by Raghavan Iyer

hmm...it's hard to remember my first experience with Indian food. I think it wasn't until sometime in college, but I've been a fan ever since!

From Talk

Parents with different nationalities, what do you still make?

my mom is japanese, and my dad is american (mostly irish). while i was growing up, my mom's mom asked me which i liked more, potatoes or rice, my guess is to assess my cultural identity. being the diplomat that i am, i told her that i really like them both the same. she nodded he head and seemed to accept that answer.

i cook a lot of japanese food, more than my mother ever did. i'm just trying to learn from my grandma while i still have the opportunity.

Cook the Book: 'Eat Me: The Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin'

I agree with what someone else said...most likely the type of people that read this sight create their own dishes all the time!

I very rarely follow recipes (except in baking), i usually just start throwing things together that sound good to me!

One Good Egg, One Good Idea

My go-to quick meal is one egg, fried over-hard with some soy sauce drizzled on top between 2 pieces of toast .

...i also grew up thinking the only way to make an omelette was with some scallions mixed in served with rice and soy sauce.

Win Fuchsia Dunlop's 'Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper'

The house special tofu at my favorite Chinese restaurant. Basically tofu with a light black bean sauce flavored with hot peppers and pork. yuuuuuuuuuum.
