Iowa pizza suggestions?

Iowa City - Pagliai's Pizza - by the most authentic in Iowa City
Mama Nicks - Cedar Falls- never been but heard about it!

From Slice

Patsy's Pizza, East Harlem

I live a block away from Patsy's and probably eat there at least once a month (I try to limit myself!) All I can say, is that Patsy's is more than just the pizza. It's the fact that I can walk in whenever I want, get a table, and the waiters recognize me and smile. It's the pizza too - I love it - despite the review above. It's no pretentious, it's real and I've never been to diFara's but with all the hype and the price, I'll take my Patsy's. And the rest of you can wait online at Grimaldi's - that's for the birds.

In lunch wasteland hell

i work in midtown and whenever i get the chance i eat at La Bonne Soupe. Their cobb salad is to die for - giant pieces of perfectly cooked bacon and salad dressing you could drink by itself. and their soup is good too.
but sometimes there is a wait - but you can call ahead and their service is quick!

Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.

i second Mercadito, also Mesa Coyocan in brooklyn - but if you want the same food in Manhattan - go to Barrio Chino - not much different and the chef used to work there. But Barrio Chino is pretty small and you might have to wait for a table.
A really underrated place is Palador on 34th street - it's really quality food and authentic and romantic.

Casa Mezcal

it's still slated to open as far as i know. i'm acquainted with the owners. like all restaurant / bar projects, i think it's just taking longer than anticipated to open. not sure what their strategy is for marketing the opening, but i have a feeling you'll know via blogs and webs when it opens to the public.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Anchovies

there was post awhile back for a pasadilere - french pizza with caramelized onions, olives, anchovies & goat cheese. it's amazing!
also, just reduce anchovies and add to red sauce and it really kicks up the flavor so you have an instant homemade tomato sauce with pasta!

@ therealchiffonade - make the olive oil granola - you will not be disappointed! it's like crack. i have everyone in my office hooked on it. i'm not sure i can keep up with the demand (or share any more!)

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 73: Sometimes Only Dark Chocolate Malted Milk Balls Will Do: What's Your Weakness?

i too have have a recent weakness for the Haagan Dazs 'five' flavors - seems like it's at least somewhat good for you because it's so 'natural'. ha. i was really excited about the brown sugar flavor - but it left something to be desired - probably dark chocolate malted milk balls! try the mint flavor - pure heaven.

Served: The Ballsy Waitress

i've worked in many restaurants and it's always been a rule - take the money and don't say a word. you wouldn't question an exceptionally large tip by asking someone - 'are you sure you meant to leave this?' so the same rule should apply that you don't question any other amount. preaching to the choir a bit on this one as i'm sure everyone is this column, as a general rule, tips appropriately. in the end, as a server that's just part of the deal.

A Tale of Two Tarts at Astoria’s Restaurant 718

for those in manhattan - the modern bar (moma restaurant) has a great version of this tart flamblée. i remember having a drink there one night, smelling the bacon, and ordering without even knowing what it was. it smelled that good!

Fancy Restaurants Should Implement an Early 'Baby Seating'

i'm not a baby hater either - but here are some points to consider:

if you don't have additional income to cover a babysitter, maybe you should be cooking at home and saving money. what about the notion that eating out is something special and should be reserved for special occasions? maybe some parents should teach their children the value of the 'dinner' table at home with the family, rather than eating out.

who wants to eat an expensive meal with a baby in her lap? i certainly wouldn't want to try to weilding a knife and fork while reaching over a baby's head. it just doesn't occur to me that i could enjoy a dinner out if i had to tend to a child. i would much prefer to be in the comfort of my own home.

and lastly, having been a server and worked in the restaurant industry, i supposed i'm biased after having cleaned more than enough tables post child-dining. i don't wish that upon anyone.
