Hamburger America: Eastside Big Tom in Olympia, Washington

The goop was great I know the recipe. Big Tom's was the greatest when I grew up. My little league team would go there, or Shakey's, after we won. There was one in Lacey and Tumwater too, but I think the West Olympia is the only one left. (Tito, did you go to Evergreen, St. Martins, or SPSCC? I went to Evergreen class of 90.)

C'mon Pepsi & Coke. Have this stuff available year round. I am tired of importing mine from Mexico. Ditto Dr. Pepper. I love the sugar-based Dr. Pepper from Dublin, TX, but having it shipped up winds up costing almost $3 per 8oz. bottle.

I only buy sugar-based soda (Crater Lake Cream Soda is my current favorite).

Though I love my Wonder Bread and 3 Kraft Singles, I graduated to Havarti and a thin slice of turkey on rustic white bread, toasted and dipped in olive & garlic salsa.

Our local Publix tells me that Pepsi Throwback will soon be off the shelves, being only a summer item. Is that true?

I miss the S'mores cookies and Fudgies, the little Kraft chewy candies in a gold wrapper. Does anyone remember the cereal, Double-Dip Crunch? I was like a "frosted" Crispix. Mmmmm!!! Oh, and the Quacker "strawberry" snack/dessert bars that looked like Nutri-Grain but had a little "squiggle" of white "icing" on top. I'm hungry now.

Something I forgot to say (>.

The change from saying "Sugar" on the label to "Sucrose" is probably due to a recent change in regulations that states that the manufacturers have to use the scientific name for the ingredient. Drinks with added vitamins have ingredient lists that look horrifying until you look them up and discover that it's just the vitamins. :)

here's a list of common vitamins if anyone's interested

Sucrose or table sugar is obtained from sugar cane or sugar beets.

Sucrose IS real sugar :) heh.

I know a lot of people that travel to mexico regularly, some of whom lived there for many years. Everyone always says mexican coke is better, now i know why.

So that awful nasty taste in coke and pepsi is the sweetener? =/ Eweh.. The only soda i really like is Root Beer...
Looks like I missed my chance to try this throwback stuff but I'm not sure I really care that I don't like soda :) Better for my bones and fat cells. Hehe.

Are they REALLY stopping the Throwback sodas on June 13? Are they crazy? BTW be VERY wary of Passover Coke. For the past two years they have NOT used sugar - they have used SUCROSE. They simply will do whatever they can to avoide spending any extra money on sugar. They stink.

This is hysterical - I have been trying to enlighten my fiance on the yumminess of Magic Middle cookies (apparently he was sheltered and never tried them) and he just doesn't get it. I guess if you never tried one, you wouldn't know what you were missing, but still. Also, LOVED Crystal Pepsi!!! Was it really only out for one year? That's surprising - I thought it was fairly popular in my little neck of the woods.

Has anyone beenable to purchase the throwback. I have tried my local Shoprite and Stop and Shop to no avail. Help I want to try it before the deadline.

I miss everything on the top ten list with the exception of the C3PO's-never had those. I also miss Planters Cheeseballs and Cheesecurls, and O' Boises (those were by far my favorite potato chip growing up-especially the sour cream and onion).
But I'm super surprised that one of the most amazing foods of the 80's was left off of this list and wasn't named by anyone. I want to know what happened to Red Devil Cheese Puffs. My mom would buy them every year for New Years Eve and we were so excited to take them out of the freezer and bake them-and even if they were burnt they were still good. I really miss those and can't find them anywhere.
As far as fast food restaurants, I was very happy to find a Roy Rogers a couple of years ago (to only have it taken away from me) but all of their food from my childhood all tasted the same right down to the french fries and the pickles in the fixin bar.
Also, I don't know if any one has noticed but the good old "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame bun" (of course I'm referring to the Big Mac), the special sauce is different from when I was a kid-which I kept telling my mom about and she thought I was crazy, but I saw something on food network recently that said McD's lost the special sauce recipe in the 90's and the sauce is different now-so that being said I also miss the original big mac.

There is also a bottling plant in West Jefferson, NC that bottles Dr. Pepper AND Mountain Dew with sugar instead of HFCS. I drive there all the time on the way to visit my brother to pick up cases of both. It's $15.75 for a case of twenty-four 12oz bottles. I used to get Dr. Pepper shipped to me from the Dublin plant all the time, but since I discovered the NC plant I don't any more, of course. Here is the address:

2614 NC Highway 163, West Jefferson, NC 28694

Here are a couple of pics I took of the place:

I'm a regular Mt Dew drinker (allergic to coffee and cola - need to get my caffeine somewhere!), but in Mexico I couldn't find any. After getting over the caffeine withdrawl, I started drinking Squirt. Yum. Tasted just like carbonated, slightly sweetened grapefruit. And wouldn't you know - it listed grapefruit extract as an ingredient, along with, of course, sugar. So this is my new favorite drink. I get home but a case, and yuck. No sparkly grapefruit flavor and that icky bitter aftertaste that I now realize is a constant is American sodas. I figure the HFCS is the culprit for the aftertaste, and the total lack of grapefruit anything whatsoever explains the rest of the problem. Fortunately, I have left my caffeine needs behind, so Poopsi completely lost a customer with that one.

Jews eat grains on Passover, but only unleavened, hence matza. The corn problem is something called kitniyot, and applies to rice and certain legumes as well.

My son (now 21) has had a corn allergy most of his life. I always used to tuck away a few extra bottles of "Kosher for Passover" real sugar coke for him to enjoy during the rest of the year. I didn't want him drinking "diet" drinks just to avoid corn syrup.

To this day he doesn't drink much soda. But when he wants a treat, it has to be corn-syrup free REGULAR coke squirreled away during Passover!

Haven't you seend the ads on Food Network?! HFCS is made from corn and, just like sugar, is fine in moderation... haha, too funny!!

I joined so I could say that changing from Coke w/ sugar to New Coke was one of the stupidest moves of the last century. How I miss the real Classic Coke! (Serious Cokaholic). Pepsi only won the challenge because on the first sip, it's ultra sweet, after that--sickening. Coke was actually just as popular as Pepsi, only more expensive to produce due to using real sugar; they only changed to HFCS to rival Pepsi's higher profit margin. For shame, greedy Coke! One of the best tastes on earth, gone! Btw, HFCS is largely responsible for serious weight gain in this generation and is in almost all processed food. Check it out and avoid it.

Maybe the limited offer is a test to see if people will buy it before rolling out a premium line? Too bad its not coke, I prefer it and mexican coca-cola is sooo much better than the stuff here.

You can sometimes buy the Mexican Coca-Cola here in northern CA at Costco but it is about 5 dollars more per case. That plus the CRV makes a big price difference to my wallet, so I seldom buy it. If the Throwback versions become available in my small town, I will definitely stock up!

I totally remember Doo Dads. I grew up in Michigan and my father loved that snack. Since moving to Florida 15 years ago I've never seen it again.

I'm also glad to see others that remember Cinnamon Chachos. I loved those and when I explain them to people (to see if they remember them) they look at me like I'm insane.

I didn't realize that Planter's discontinued Cheez Balls. That's a bummer.

sable42, I'm happy to report that here in Florida Little Caesar's has had a huge resurgence thanks to cheap $5 take-away pizzas. Years ago Caesar's started closing up, but in the last year or so they've exploded all over my area, even opening a Drive Thru location! Now all the pizza places in the area are trying to copy them (usually with a bigger $6 pizza) but L.C. is doing business like gangbusters.

Also, if you never had GatorGum don't worry, it was terrible.

I miss Jello gelatin pops. They had a really nice consistency and never froze so hard that you couldn't bite 'em.
