I think that you'll have to watch it while it bakes. An angel food cake is much bigger than a bundt cake.

What is your stance on "tipping"?

I think the "tip jar" is a horrible idea and should be outlawed. Think about it. If your friend makes you a cup of coffee, are you going to give him a dollar? So why does the snarky 16-24 year old at Starbucks deserve it?

I feel very awkward about tipping at take out places. I don't think putting my order in a bag deserves a tip any more than putting my groceries in a bag. In fact, grocery store clerks deserve a tip WAY more than the take out people do.

How to cook butternut squash

I once asked my boyfriend to put a squash in the oven for me before I got out of work. I gave him the instructions cut it in half and put on a cookie sheet. I called him later to see if he had done it. He replied, "Yeah but it barely fit. I had to rearrange the whole oven."

We have a tiny apartment stove, but I was perplexed by how a squash couldn't fit in it. When I got home, the squash was sitting on top of the stove. He had cut it in half crosswise! It looked quite hilarious sitting in the pan.

As for a cooking suggestion, I like to cut my squash in half lengthwise, throw some maple syrup and butter on it, and roast.

Have You Ever Deep Fried a Turkey for Thanksgiving?

My uncle likes deep frying turkies for thanksgiving. They do come out incredibly moist. The biggest drawback is that you can't make gravy or stuffing from it, they have to be done separately.

It's sort of a primitive and manly thing, they all gather around the frier out in the driveway, doing whatever it is men do. "Look at this meat! We are cooking it!"

Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?

I think if most pies had half the amount of filling, they would be perfect. The one exception is pecan pie which I will happily eat in almost any state.

I always always make a double crust recipe. It's not so much about the filling vs crust to me (though I do love a good crust), it's about the ratio of it all.

Is this a novice pseudo-vegetarian problem?

I was a vegetarian for many years, and the first several times I ate meat afterward, I felt very sick. But since you eat meat every few days, I would sort of doubt that it was the cause. Also, filet mignons are not exactly what I'd call a huge chunk of beef. It was most likely that your meal wasn't handled properly.

It depends on the market too. If you open somewhere with limited pizza offerings or only one style of pizza, it's better.

When I was 8, the first pizza place opened in our area. Before that, the only pizza was Pizza Hut, 30 minutes away. Needless to say it was a huge hit, despite the fact that the pizza is pretty gross. Many years later, a "New York" style pizza place opened, and for the first two years they were open, the wait for a pizza was an hour long. They have been incredibly successful and I am sure the guy is now a millionaire.

Cereal with Water and Other Cereal Compulsions

I can not even begin to point out how flawed the logic of eating cereal with water is. Does she think she is doing herself a favor by not eating the milk? I am not sure how much cereal she actually consumes, whether it's two bowls or four, but unless they are mixing bowl sized, the milk is not going to make her fat, the cereal is. And if she actually has a compulsion to eat four bowls of cereal a day, then she should get some counseling.

Can a bundt cake pan and angel food cake pan be interchangeable?

My guess is that you can use an angel food cake pan for bundt cakes, but not vice-versa.

A bundt cake has a fairly high fat ratio and it's leaveners will work in the straight edged pan.

An angel food cake uses eggs as a leavener and the cake needs the straight sided pan to rise properly when baking.

That's just my two cents.

I think you'll be fine for the bundt. Happy Thanksgiving.

From Talk

Can a bundt cake pan and angel food cake pan be interchangeable?

Thanks, lemonfair. My grandmother would never let any other batter touch her angel food pan. I thought maybe it would become seasoned over time if you used any butter or grease on it.

From Talk

Can a bundt cake pan and angel food cake pan be interchangeable?

@zucchini - You can clean an angel food pan just fine for future use with angel food cake. The no fat rule is mostly for the beating of the egg whites when making the cake, but yes, you wouldn't want any fat on the sides of the pan, either, so the cake can climb. But you've used the batters and bowls for other things, and they clean well enough - the pan will too.

It's not like you're taking a bundt recipe and trying to make it in a jelly roll pan. The shape is close enough that it should be fine.

That said, Bundt pans are nice because you get the interesting design that doesn't need much embellishment. A little powdered sugar to enhance the design, and it looks fancy. And to be honest, I'm not a big fan of sweet frostings, so a frostingless-bundt cake makes me happy.

IMO, the Nordicware bundts are better quality than most of the others you'll find. If you've got a Marshall's or Tuesday Morning or similar discount store near you, you can probably pick one up cheaper.

I ahte unitaskers. Those fancy schmancy bundt pans in the shape of whatever are annoying. Like wilton pans. I have one bundt, one tube and one giant deep cake pan. Angel food does well in a tube pan because it needs to climb to be substanial. High is the word du jour. Use something really high.

Save the pan for future use - learning how to make a good angel food cake will serve you well. What's $10 for future deliciousness?

The NYTimes one is a no fail - I was going to make pie and saw this and thought "mmm.. cake pie" - I changed the apple out to Gala tho.. as the Fuji's at Whole Foods were too old.

Have FUN! If yer not then change out again and make everyone an ice cream sundae with caramel, ginger ice cream and pumpkin cookies. You WILL not be shut down :)

Not sure if I would call it weird.. but we would always have tomato aspic with a little onion, green olive and shrimp peering out from the shimmering, and shivering, mold. Sliced and served with a dollop of homemade lemon mayonnaise.

Sounds gross.. but it's pretty awesome.

I always thought an angel food cake pan had to be solely dedicated to angel food because of the no grease rule. If you use the pan for a regular cake, buttered and floured, won't that ruin it forever for use as an angel food pan?

What is your stance on "tipping"?

The free online dictionary defined gratuity as "a favor or gift, usually in the form of money, given in return for service." If it's required then it isn't a favor or a gift, it's a fee. So @mongoose is correct.

As for the article... A 18% gratuity on their $73.87 tab would have been $13.29, not the $16.35 they were charged so that's unfair to the customers. The article I first read about the incident mentioned that the group waited over an hour for salads and wings, that their waitress went out for a cigarette break instead of bringing their napkins/silverware/etc, and that they had to go to the bar to get their drinks because no one was around to wait on them.

Yes waitstaff deserve a break but leaving a group of people for an hour without any service is irresponsible. Not bringing your table the items they require like drinks or silverware or their food is irresponsible. The restaurant barely did what they were supposed to do. The customers should not be required to pay. I think they should have complained to a manager and pointed out the math error in the bill and explained why they were refusing to tip instead of just walking out.

What is your stance on "tipping"?

I live in NYC and tip an amount that is double the tax (always rounding up to a whole dollar amount). Coins are tacky. Service jobs are hard, physical (and often emotional) work. I get genuinely nauseated when someone tips less than 15% for average to great service. At my favorite places, I have tipped 50%.

If you frequent a particular restaurant, tip well. It's worth every penny. Remember dining out is not just about feeding your face. It's an experience.

Don't try to justify your bad decorum. If you're too cheap to tip the recommended 18% pre-tax gratuity for decent service, for the love of gastronomy just go to supermarket and buy a frozen TV dinner.

From Talk

What is your stance on "tipping"?

I agree, honeycrisp. I definitely judge people based on their tips. I would kick a cheapskate date to the curb, and I avoid dining out with friends whose tipping is crappy, because I am filled with anxiety when the check arrives.
