WowBacon Microwave Bacon Cooker
I actually almost always microwave my bacon, one of the few things I actually do cook in the thing.
With the paper towel method I only get about 4 at a time and the fat soaks the whole paper towel and leaks off the side.
I might actually be interested in this thing.
Cook the Book: 'The Best Barbecue on Earth'
Luckily, I live in Texas and make frequent trips to Kansas City so I'm good on the best barbecue in the world.
I'd really like to go to Alaska and catch fresh Copper River Salmon and smoke it on the banks.
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast, the Jackfruit
When I lived in Ann Arbor there was a produce shop that kept Jackfruit and Durian on hand in their natural state. They were freakish to look at.
I never tried the durian, but he was handing out samples of jackfruit one day and my daughter and I gave it a go. We both thought it tasted like and acid-free pineapple and loved it.

The Frugal Gourmet
I was a big fan of the Frug' and I think his influence changed a lot about how cooking shows are presented. I can't think of another show at that time that really explained the regional differences in how people eat.
He really raised the bar of food knowledge in the country, especially in the midwest where I grew up. In the mid-80s people just weren't eating things like squid ink pasta, balsamic vinegar, fennel bulbs, etc. etc. Al dente' was a word most had never heard.
If he hadn't had his troubles, and the evidence is pretty overwhelming against him even if he never had to admit to anything, then I believe he would be among the most revered food educators. As it is, most younger people don't know him at all, but his influence is still being felt in very strong ways.
It was a deep personal loss to me, he really taught me how to cook and also why it's important to be curious about the foodways of other cultures. I still have all of his cookbooks, but I don't use them much.
The Best Pies in America: The Serious Eats Pie Honor Roll
No list of pies is complete without the late, great R.W. Apple's favorite, the cherry pie at The Cherry Hut in Beulah, Mich. They use local cherries and still put lard in the crust.
Trader Joe's Torture: What one thing do you have to buy?
I wish I had thought of this before I left Ann Arbor for TJ's bereft San Antonio.
One item, it would be the Truffle Brownie mix. Just about the only brownie mix I can find that has no corn or milk in it (family member allergies).
I would be awful sad to leave without a log of their super-affordable chevre. Alway 2 or 3 bucks less per log than anyone else for the same brands. Maybe I'd send my wife back in for that ...

Help! I Flunked the AOL Regional Barbecue Test
I scored 5 out of 10 and I grew up in Kansas City and have lived in South Georgia and Austin, Texas.
2 things about the quiz, though.
1. Raichlan is still laboring under the idea that Kansas City barbecue sauce is all about the molasses. If you eat at Bryant's, Gate's or Snead's you get anything but sweet in their original sauces. It really makes me crazy how KC Masterpiece has come to define Kansas City style. I knew KC wasn't the answer to that question but I voted for the ol' hometown out of spite.
2. I've eaten a lot of ribs in Austin and they never struck me as particularly pink (Maybe the Salt Lick's?). But, the baby backs at Artz Rib House were definitely smokin' hot.

Sad Foods: What do you eat in times of trouble?
Unfortunately I've had a lot of experience with this lately. When I lost my mom last month I think we all ate our own weight in smoked brisket, potato salad and washed it down with Shiner beers and Lone Star. Seemed to fit the bill. My mom made great fried green tomatoes, always fried in bacon fat. That's going to get made before too long on one of my inevitable bad days.
Cook the Book Giveaway: 'Pork & Sons'
Cochinita Pibil. Slow roasted pork shoulder in orange juice wrapped in banana leaves.
Robert Rodriguez featured it on his 10 minute cooking school. You can watch it on YouTube.
The Frugal Gourmet
I taped Jeff's holiday episodes (Thanksgiving/Christmas) along with many others and to this day I enjoy his enthusiasm and zest for life. I watch them to this day because he makes me smile! As for alleged transgression, I understand they are just that: alleged. I didn't know the man personally and I would venture to say from reading above that all but one had never met the man. I have to agree with kratos that a person is innocent until proven guilty and sensationalized media coverage shouldn't count as a jury of your peers. I pray he was innocent and paid his out of court settlement so that he and his family could have some peace. We will never know. I miss him but I have his chuckle, his Handel Watermusic theme song and his sign off to remember him by: "I bid you peace...bye bye!"
The Frugal Gourmet
Well since this thread seems dead I need to state my view. Everybody who has declared this man guilty of the allegations are really clueless. I guess innocent until proven guilty is just a saying anymore. If you have without a doubt proof then post it. Everybody should realize that everybody who accused the man of such a crime might have a bigger motive ($$$). Since he settled out of court well I guess that makes him guilty, got into a fender bender with some guy and it was not my fault my insurance company settled out of court with the guy guess that makes me guilty. Jeff thanks for all of your culinary wisdom and may you be at the table of good food.
The Best Pies in America: The Serious Eats Pie Honor Roll
Add another vote for Petsi Pies. The owner, Renee, is one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet, all business aside. She just happens to make some of the finest baked goods in the area, as well. It is one of my personal joys to go to this shop and see what they have that day. My favorites are the peach blackberry pie in the summer, and the apple, pear, cranberry pie with walnut streusel topping in the fall. The menu changes with the season - I highly recommend visiting!
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast, the Jackfruit
I found some at a grocery store once canned in light syrup. It was really good! And the texture is like nothing else.
The Best Pies in America: The Serious Eats Pie Honor Roll
We'll vote twice for Petsi Pies in Somerville, Ma. My son & I are huge pie fans & her pies are way up there among the best we've eaten.
The Frugal Gourmet
I remember watching the Frugal Gourmet with my grandfather all the time when I was little. It's sad to know what was going on behind the scenes, but I'll always remember both fondly.
The Frugal Gourmet
Much as I hate to date myself (yes, I know, nobody else will...), I grew up watching not Mr. Smith the Frugal, but Mr. Kerr the Galloping. TV chefs that style themselves "The...Gourmet" seem to get comeuppance in the fullness of time. Still, I learned quite a bit from each in their season, and identify more strongly with Kerr's weakness than Smith's.
The Frugal Gourmet
Along with Julia child, his show was one of the first cooking shows that I watched. As a kid, although I loved Julia I also found his food and his techniques much easier to understand. I don't know much about the allegations, but I hope they aren't true.
The Frugal Gourmet
I'm sorry to know that "The Frug" is dead and sorry to know about his scandal. His was a fun and useful show. I bid him peace.
The Frugal Gourmet
Jeff Smith (January 22, 1939 – July 7, 2004) was the author of a dozen best-selling cookbooks and the host of The Frugal Gourmet, a popular American cooking show which began in Tacoma, Washington and aired on PBS from 1988 to 1997, and consisted of 261 episodes.
The Frugal Gourmet
Loved "The Frugal Gourmet", by far one of the best cooking shows ever done. TVFN could learn a lot by watching his shows and stop with the idiot personality angle. Jeff Smith taught me one thing about cooking that I still carry with me... "Food, is a celebration of life"... truer words were never spoken. As to the stuff that happened to him in his personal life, I cannot speak on such issues as I don't know, and neither do any of you the "Whole story". He has no doubt by now, answered to the only being capable of knowing his guilt or innocence.
"I bid you peace"
The Frugal Gourmet
His cooking show was truly the best I've ever seen. I'd never watched cooking shows before until The Frugal Gourmet, but it was an amazing education delivered with compassion and caring. I got a chance to meet with Jeff on several occasions and he was always the most caring and gracious person. Yes, he was a minister and came from a Methodist background. In his shows and his books he often shared messages of compassion to care for our elderly who ate TV dinners alone, or to remember to put meaning in our holidays.
He was certainly the cooking celebrity of his time and I don't know if he was guilty or simply a target that money, not jail-time satisfied. We will never know what really happened, but there but for the grace of God go you and I. It is wrong to judge someone without walking in their shoes and knowing the facts. I can only speak to my experience of his deeds which spoke volumes of caring and compassion.
