Is Public Drinking Good For the Neighborhood?

Have you seen this article from the NY Times about Kimber VanRy?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/27/nyregion/27nyc.html

I have to say, though, as a public defender, I'm actually kind of glad that you got a summons. After years of seeing my clients come through the system for minor violations of the law - things that I could do in my neighborhood like have a beer on my stoop or put my feet up on the subway - I am beyond thrilled to hear an officer say that he recognizes his duty to enforce the law equally.

Chef Coats..do you have one and if so, what would you recommend?

I just got my dad a chef's jacket from Chefwear for Christmas. He loves it - it fits true to size and is made out of what feels like a solid, durable material.

Sunday Supper: Maple Baked Beans

I made this for dinner tonight, and it was SO good! I can't wait to eat the leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

Taste Test: Eggnog

Boice Brothers Dairy in Kingston, NY makes the most amazing eggnog ever. My mom has to buy like, fifteen of them for Christmas because we all go nuts for it. Especially good served in a punch bowl, mixed with rum and topped with a big scoop of Stewart's French vanilla ice cream.

Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides: Carey's Park Slope and Prospect Heights

For delivery in Prospect Heights, I'm all about Sapid for Indian food, Taqueria de los Muertos for cheesy, meaty, sour-cream-drenched "Mexican" food and Cataldo's for their tasty pizza and pasta. Also, James' burger happy hour = best ever.

Food gifts with a NY vibe

By Brooklyn on Smith Street in Cobble Hill carries a ton of delicious things, all made in Brooklyn. Their inventory changes, but last time I was there, they had Liddabit candies, Morris Kitchen ginger syrup, stroopwafels from... someone in Brooklyn!... and mustard and some other stuff. It's an awesome one stop shop for Brooklyn-centric hostess gifts. (Though it probably won't have a lot of "classic" New York-y stuff like bagels, pastrami, etc.)

Adam, Tom's used to be closed on Sundays, but they're open every day now. They do close at 4 pm, though.

I usually take my parents to Beast on Vanderbilt for brunch. The food is reliably good, the space is comfortable and there's rarely a wait.

Starting another Chemo Thread

When my mom had cancer, she didn't have to go through chemo, but she did suffer from a lot of post-surgery and painkiller-induced nausea. I remember she used lavender oil to fight the nausea, as well as ginger chews, ginger syrup, ginger ale. L'Occitane makes a wonderful hand cream with real lavender oil that seemed to help a bit, and we would give her hand massages with it.

Also, I don't know if this is helpful, but when I had my wisdom teeth out and couldn't eat solid food for a bit, I ate a lot of pureed veggie soups with sour cream or marscarpone cheese blended in for a little extra protein boost. Trader Joe's sells different vegetable based soups in cartons with pour spouts - the carrot ginger and butternut squash ones are really delicious.

Best of luck in your treatment. My thoughts are with you.
