I second the motion on a visit there this weekend. Hmmm... perhaps a Meetup group could be in the making based off your burger reviews! If hotjog happens to have their username tattooed to their forehead and I happen to pull my face away from a Zekeburger in time to catch it I'll float the idea. If that doesn't work I'll just start stalking you, Damon.

As someone looking for a new cult to join if you told me a cow pie nestled between two buns was tasty I'd try it... without the veggie "huddle in the corner of the plate" of course.

OMG! You're insane, Damon! I love it! Thank you for chasing down this burger truck so I don't have to. Time is money and I have little of either so thanks to you I don't have to spend my money or waste my time trolling Twitter for this one.

I LOVED the pic of you in the food truck. Nice touch. While it looks like the burger sucked, this just might be my favorite of your posts yet.

Highlights from My Year in Hamburgers

Congrats on the 1 year anniversary and thanks for being my L.A. Burger Guide. I can honestly say that you've revolutionized the way I look at burgers. You also revolutionized the size of the spare tire surrounding my waist as I've become a burger addict. Your reviews are well worth the added pounds to my frame. Here's to another year of reviews!

The Del Taco Double Cheeseburger in Real Life

I gotta 2nd cervates008 and give big shout out to Dick's in Seattle. Ahhh... the countless nights I spent as a teen drunkenly waiting in line for those fries and Dick's Deluxe.

This is the first review of a mediocre burger where I've still wanted to go out and try one. Weird. It must be the power of advertising in fast food or as you pointed out, D, the fat, salt and sugar. I'll do my best to resist and hold out for next week's review.

BTW - found your review of Oinkster from months and months ago & took 2 friends there for dinner who loved it. Thanks, man! Your reviews make me look like the dude who's in the know... until my guilty conscience makes me reluctantly fess up and throw the credit back to your reviews... which it always does.

Don't know what the comment from SinoSoul is all about. Uh, have you had the burger at Tavern? If not, then just look at the pics of the burger from that review and compare them to the pics of this review. Now do you see? Tavern takes "run it through the garden" to a whole new level.

A Disappointing Classic at Rick's Drive In and Out in Silver Lake, California

I just gotta say as a long time reader I'm surprised at the controversy around this review. I'm not sure I understand film_score's comment -- at all. "It would be much better if you were going to places that are actually known for having good burgers rather than just going to random hole-in-walls..." Um... duh. That's like criticizing wikipedia for having an entry on a subject you don't know about. What I love about Damon's AHT is that he's going to places we often haven't heard of. Would anyone watch Andrew Zimmern if he went to Marie Calendar's, Denny's or any other number of known food joints? One of the great pleasures in life is discovering new foods and new places for food. Damon, please don't go "to places where at least there is some expectation that there will be a good burger" because we can get that perspective anywhere. Let's face it, you're a burger guru and I for one never paid much attention to hamburgers until I discovered your blog. Thank you.

And as far as the whole ordering medium rare at a "fast food" place controversy is concerned, I don't see the point. If you like your food prepared a certain way you should ask for it. Can anyone say "animal style", "flying dutchman" or "well done fries"? Last I checked In N Out is considered fast food. Your first blog was on Bill's Burgers - a hole in the wall burger stand in Van Nuys where I've now visited on several occasions and Bill has never shrugged off a request for a medium rare burger. Some places accommodate and others don't and that's a sizable factor in where I spend my hard earned $$.

I think it's ridiculous to imagine that you'll never eat animal products at some point. It should be thought of as a guiding principle. I know what makes the most difference here in LA is getting to know hte owner and his/her sense of commitment to a vegan/veg lifestyle.

After following your burger reviews for months I've converted to the ketchup-definitely-belongs-on-a-burger camp. As a child I didn't even care for ketchup... on anything but you've completely rocked my burger world, Damon. What I love about this review is that once again you've taken burgers to new gastro-importantical heights by showing us the nuances of what makes a great burger. I'm actually going to stop in to Laurel Tavern and try that burger but thanks to your review I've got myself a road map to ordering it right. I'll order it rare and tell them to 86 the funny stuff that seems to muck it up. Who knows, I may just end up with a decent burger! Will you reimburse me for my Lipitor prescription? You see, I'm hooked on this blog. Thanks to you, Damon, I can't stop thinking about trying hamburgers all over town. Whenever I pass by some rundown stand I cannot help wondering if it'll eventually show up on AHT and turn out to be this hidden culinary gem of a burger. Sometimes I pull over and indulge myself hoping I'll beat you to the punch. Sadly that's yet to happen. You've really got a helluva touch with this AHT thing. My hat is off to you, sir. With the holidays approaching, work dwindling and weather chilling I suddenly find myself in the mood for a daytime trek to a darkened dive bar. A Barbecuer's Cheeseburger at Zeke's Smokehouse in West Hollywood, CA

I got lost on the way there, so I ended up driving past Umami Burger 2X.

The burger came out Med Rare, so kudos for cooking the meat correctly. It was unseasoned, and they barely got any char on it from the grill...this means that the cooks had the flame set too low. The cheese (cheddar) was unmelted, because..............the cooks are incompetent at cooking burgers. Besides, it wouldn't have really mattered. The big, honking, dry, sesame seeded bun overwhelmed the bland patty. I even got all R-rated on this thing and ate it topless. It was still unremarkable in every way. It was just uninteresting and unmemorable.

I bet that they make great BBQ, though.

Overview: Don't expect to get a good burger in a BBQ joint.

My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood

So, for the record, I have never met or corresponded with Damon Gambuto (but, I would love to!). Also, for the record, I had Baby Blues delivered a few weeks ago, and had an extra-ordinary experience - story to follow.

To all the folks who are upset that Damon did not review the BBQ at Baby Blues, from what I can tell Damon Gambuto is a Los Angeles based burger correspondent, and he is great at what he does. Sometimes BBQ joints can offer up a good burger. In fact, Damon recently reviewed three burgers at Zeke's Smokehouse, which is directly across the street from Baby Blues. It is a great write up, and you can search for it on this site.

I went to Zeke's Smokehouse last night based on Damon's review and I loved it, and commented earlier today on that piece - thanking him, because the burger was so tasty. Damon gave baby Blues the same shot, and didn't love the burger. Oh, well. Get over it. At least he was brave enough to give that combination of flavors a fair shake.

BTW - I once had a a grilled veal chop topped with melted brie and lingonberries that was exquisite. Perhaps the burger would shine if the blue cheese and bacon stood out more and the sauce had whole berries rather than being more of a pureed sauce. It would probably require arugula to balance the sweet, salty and pungent with some peppery goodness. But, as a purist, I would still prefer a good, quality burger without all the hoopla and dressy fanfare. That's just how I roll.

I am assuming Lincolnberry is an Ebonics-esque play on lingonberry. If you are truly curious, give Baby Blues a call.

My experience at Baby Blues? My husband and I wanted beef ribs, and when I asked the gal on the phone how many came with the order she replied, "one - it's like a big steak." We decided to give it a shot, and each ordered one, which came with a choice of two sides. I opted for collards and mashed potatoes, hubby had corn and cole slaw. The sides were delish, but one of the ribs was burnt and less than half the size of the other rib.

I let my honey have the good rib and insisted he eat it while I called, because I am sweet like that (and we had just moved into our new place and he had been doing hard physical labor and desperately needed the fortification). The hostess got the manager who apologized profusely and asked if I wanted another rib. I did. Forty minutes later, the manager showed up at the door and told my hubz he cooked it himself. Maybe it was my sultry phone-sex voice, but I'd like to think it was solid dedication. Anyways, it was nice. A chuck blade, essentially. It didn't rock my socks off, but it was a good chuck rib weighing in at 16 ounces or more, and it was properly (lovingly?) cooked. The sauce was not my favorite, as it was a bit sweet and overly tart with vinegar for a tomato based sauce, and the XXX sauce was a bit salsa-like for my taste. The service, on the other hand, made a strong, favorable impression.

Thanks for the well-written review, Damon. As I left Zeke's last night, I glanced across the street and wondered if Baby Blues had a decent burger. Now I know what to expect.

Maack out.

A Barbecuer's Cheeseburger at Zeke's Smokehouse in West Hollywood, CA

Thank you so much for this post, Damon! I love your writing and your purist sensibilities. You haven't missed with me, yet. In short: you rock.

I just hit Zeke's Smokehouse last night and had the Zeke's Burger w/ cheddar (sans bun). It was a might tasty burger with bold smoke flavor, and everything you said it was. I agree wholeheartedly - no condiments required. I was quite pleased. Better still, it's just a hop skip and a jump from my house! Bravo!!

I look forward to hitting up more of your suggestions. Keep 'em coming.

From A Hamburger Today

I've often overlooked the burger choices at high quality BBQ joints simply because the traditional pork BBQ or brisket there is so good. But it stands to reason that such an outfit has considerable meat knowledge that will be put to good use when grilling a burger.

From A Hamburger Today

A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California

Save your money, folks. The burger at 25 Degrees is a sad affair. Today, the service was both inattentive and poorly timed. But on to the food. Great rings and tasty fries. The burger meat itself is great--one is keenly aware that it is sirloin, and that is a good thing. Sadly, both burgers were overcooked, and the bun is a disaster. The top of bun was tough and dry enough to make a "thock" sound when tapped with a fingernail. It basically overwhelmed the burger with dry joylessness. The bottom of the bun, also a shamefully overbaked puck of parched, crumbling sadness. The cheese was not melted over the burger, but simply served as an unmelted pile of gunk in the center of the burger, which had so be scraped from the bun and then spread.

The high point is that the waitress must have stuffed two angels down the back of her pants to present such a compelling view. So, the highlights---Good sides, good sights, good sirloin.

Overview: 25 Degrees is a weak suck and can be avoided.

Birthday Burger at Tavern in Brentwood, Los Angeles

Sadly, this burger is nowhere near being worthy of the attention or the price tag. This evening's rendition was absolutely insipid. The beef added nothing but bulk to the dish--no satisfying crust, no rich, no seasonings in or on, no aged beef funkiness, and the grind was fine enough to make it resemble baby food in both taste and texture. The bun would really work with a flavorful version of this burger. The dough was worked just a touch longer than a proper scone, which meant that the gluten strands were sufficiently short as to not create a chewy product. This yielded a perfect, but bland mouth feel. One should definitely pass on the rings. The rings were greasy to the touch and greasier in the mouth--"crunchy, oil sponges" comes to mind.

It is no wonder that not a single staff member asked our table how our food was (during and after the meal)--the answer would have been "disappointing." So it goes...I'm sure that other menu items at Tavern, are wonderful (the heirloom tomatoes were very nice), but I would not recommend this burger to any of my friends.

This was so much fun to read! I'm glad you had so much fun eating the burger. I'm a cook there and was wondering if you can email the group shot you took.

About the bacon, we recieve the bacon whole, and break it down into squares before we cook it - it would be too hard to cut, it would also mean we would have to cut everything at once, which would take too long and is too hard to store correctly. As far as the taste: its everything you ever wanted from bacon, but didn't know you were allowed to ask for more.
