I do miss that ole' keylime tree at my mom's house in Florida. No neon green food dye added to her keylime pie, and she shaves milk chocolate pieces over the top. ...it hurts to think about it (thanks, SE).

Chocolate is my favorite, but it's chocolate with meringue not whipped cream or that stuff sprayed from the can. Also like banana cream - again with meringue.

The Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink mentions cream pies briefly: "On the great dairy farms of the Midwest, cream and cheese pies became favorites."

Maybe some of our Midwestern friends can answer to the popularity of chocolate cream pies in that part of the country?

I'm questioning the chocolate creme following...I've never seen it here in TX, is it a east coast pie?

I recently discovered Cabecou-- soft and fragrant raw goat's milk cheese. Absolutely delicious... I bought some Crottin too, from a warehouse sale of a french food importer who flies in fresh cheese from France every 2 weeks. Very mild and smooth. yum.

When I was little my mom raised goats, and every spring, new kids would be born and we'd get to enjoy fresh goat milk and cheese. Mmmm. I didn't know how lucky I was.
