Eating in Brussels

Greyhounddrrl,

Do yourself a favor and go for a meal at Comme Chez Soi, located on Place Rouppe. I've only had a handful of life altering meals (Per Se, French Laundry, Robuchon in Macau) and Comme Chez Soi was one of them. They have a Chef's table located right in the kitchen, which you should def. ask about, where you'll be able to see Chef Rigolet work his magic.

If you can't make it for dinner, I recall they had a very affordable lunch tasting menu too--something along the lines of 50 Euros per head.

Good luck!

What makes a great dining evening?

Gordon Ramsay describes the perfect waiter/waitress as one who manages to do their job without being noticed. Looking back at some of my greatest dining experiences, I'd say he's right. The only time I never noticed the wait staff was when I needed them, and when I did, they were right next to me without my even having to lift a finger.

Attentiveness, without being imposing. Friendly, yet reserved. Tactful in all situations, even if the customer is being a jerk. Those are the signs of a remarkable water/waitress, and definitely a large part of the customer's overall perception of a restaurant that'll ultimately make them repeat customers!

Side note: I was recalling my experience from Per Se in New York while describing the above. Truly impeccable wait staff!

I would like to win a life-time supply of _____

For heaven's sake, people...with a little careful financial planning you CAN have a lifetime supply of bacon, butter, mortadella. Costco, hello?

Black truffles, hands down.

Salted Caramel

Snob alert! Just kidding. I know what you mean--I totally feel the same way when I see a "tuna tartare" show up on a menu and think that that was *so* yesterday. Salted caramels, however, doesn't really toot my horn as I think they're truly delectable! If ever in Paris, the salted caramels at George V at the Four Seasons are to die for, people.

New York City: How Not to Eat Like A Tourist?

I think you should definitely bring your family to the W. Village, where there are some really great eating options. Check out Perilla, run by Top Chef winner Harold. Also, August is a cozy restaurant on Bleecker...very warm, inviting, and most importantly, tasty! If you're craving some South East Asian food, stop by Fatty Crab on Hudson. Or for more upscale, drop by Jean George's Perry Street located inside Richard Meier's architecturally beautiful building on the West Side Highway. Good luck!
