Cook the Book: 'Screen Doors and Sweet Tea'

Iced jasmine tea with a sprig of mint floating on top. Or better yet, I used to get fresh, moist sassafras root from some old hippie at the farmers market in college, take it home & brew the best iced tea on earth. I've never been able to duplicate it & I've missed it for 15 years.

I used to make this strange honey ginger chicken strir fry in high school that my dad loved. Lotsa honey & dried ginger WTF?! In retrospect it sounds awful, but he loved it. He once threatened to ground me if I didn't skedaddle to the store & get the ingredients to make it for dinner one night. Good times...

It needs sliced fresh tomato, Hellman's mayo (there is no substitute), fresh cracked black pepper. All of this piled on ciabbata.

I like it crispy or greasy. I love it each and every way it can be prepared.

Peanut butter & bacon sandwich. Toast up some plain old square white bread. A layer of crunchy, not smooth, PB (Jif is the preferred brand) and a layer or two of hot, fatty, crispy bacon. Mmmm..mmmm...mmmm!

Serious Eats Gift Guide: Kitchen Essentials

Yikes! I have everything except the digital therm & the hand blender.
For what its worth, the kuhn rikon peeler rawks and is so dearly cheap. Every cook, foodie, gourmand, gastronomer or whatevah ya call yourself should get one in their stocking this year. If you already have one then, by god, you deserve a new one in a spanky new color!

Serious Eats Gift Guide: Apparel

I probably have the most jacked up feet known to man because the Dansko clogs kill my feet. I just got finished with my second pair of clogs from them (gave them a second try even though I dumped my first pair after 1 week of wearing them 2 years ago). They were comfy for about a week, but by the 3rd week of stomping around on kitchen tile for 9 hours a day I was back to taking tylenol each night to dull the screeching foot pain. I broke down & bought a new pair of Keen's (they're against our dress code so I gotta hide em) cause they are the ONLY shoes I've ever worn in the kitchen that don't leave me crying at night. They have some leather, non-skid sole versions that look pretty cool. Anyway I just had to give Keen there due since you never hear about people wearing them behind the line.

Gin and tonics are my favorite for something cool to drink while sitting on my patio.

Mint juleps! Forget mojitos, I prefer this classic work of art in bourbon, mint, sugar and ice - the perfect compliment to relaxing on a porch swing or rocker.
