What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Grand Burrito, SW corner of 23rd St/6th Ave. Open 24/7. Awesome mexican, incl. beef tongue. They offer tacos, huraches, tortas, etc. Very tasty and nothing like the 'chain' mexican junk. It's open 24/7 too....
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
Big B: How many friends/acquaintances happen to hear about your sojourns to Momofuku? Thought so. I guess namedropping is part of the privilege you pay for.
Vendy Award Finalist: Rickshaw Dumplings
Hmmmm... Doesn't sound like one of the top 5 food vendors in NYC, does it? Wait a minute! The Rickshaw review said "... best of the bunch..."!!!!!!

Eat This Now: Massive Pretzels at the Standard Beer Garden
Still kinda small compared to the real ones you can get at a typical German beer fest, where the frauleins carry a stack by sticking their arm through the holes.

I would like to officially rechristen the momofuku 'chain' with my personal, more appropriate moniker: The Naked Emperor! Nobody wants to be the first to admit that the hype of these places (Milk Bar too!) is totally out of line with their prices/hassle/quality. Just a 'me too' destination for the 'elite foodie' crowd.
So, we have the Naked Emperor Ssam Bar, the Naked Emperor Noodle Bar, the Naked Emperor Milk Bar, and Naked Emperor Ko. You saw it here first!!

$12.50 per head ("as little as")? Does that mean you paid around $100 for that single plate of chicken with a few sauces and vegetables? Wow. The Emperor is naked, dude.
Announcing The 2009 Vendy Award Finalists
Rickshaw Dumpling Truck? Seriously? Now I know these awards are a sham. You cn get better dumplings off of most no-name carts in Chinatown. And there is a TON of better cart food available from other carts around the city.
Rickshaw Dumpling Truck? Are they now a mystery sponsor of Serious Eats? I can find no other explanation for their nomination.
Quote of the Day: One for You, Nineteen for Me
Well-played title, Adam!
Meet & Eat: Lindsey Johnson, 12 Second Cocktails
She lost me at "twitterati." *sigh* Cute and can mix a drink. Oh well.
Deal of the Day: Beppo
Actually between Broadway and Park Ave on 22nd.
What's Your Go-To Neighborhood Diner?
Malibu Diner on 23rd near 7th is a must for authentic, tasty diner food--they have the huge menu with everything from Greek to pasta to seafood. Best old-school diner I've found in Manhattan,
Hoagie Haven in Princeton, NJ: Phat Ladies, Chocolate Cheesesteaks, and Happy Undergrads
I am serious when I say I am contemplating a trip down to Princeton (from Manhattan) just for one or two of these subs. (Might make a day of it with 2 meals there.) Damn.
Win a $1,200 Street Food Dinner for Two to the Citymeals-on-Wheels Fundraiser
Doner kabobs in Germany. They are done well there. In NYC, I'd go with the standard lamb gyro, white and hot sauce.
Weekend Cook and Tell: Sriracha!
My recipe is for a Sriracha Birdie Burger. Whipped this one up on Sunday:
The burger part: Cook a 1/3-lb patty (preferably 80%) with your favorite seasonings, however you like it. (Standard medium-rare for me, with some salt.) Grill it, skillet, whatever. Add a slice of your favorite cheese after you flip. (I use cheddar or American, but try some mozzarella, pepper jack, etc.)
The birdie part: Make 2 "bird-in-a-nest" slices. Take 2 pieces of your favorite burger-sized sliced bread. Tear a slightly-larger-than-egg-sized hole in the middle of each, and butter one side (or melt some butter on a skillet). Pu the 2 holey slices on the skillet on medium heat, and crack an egg into the middle of each. Let it cook about halfway through (watch the whites whiten) and flip. Finish cooking, and place slices on a plate.
Sriracha time: Drizzle this over one bird-in-a-nest slice. Drop the burger on top (cheese side up) and cover with the second bird-in a-nest.
Eggs! Burger! Cheese! Sriracha! Awesome!
Goat Cheese Burger
Goat cheese makes me want to hurl. It does NOT belong on a burger!! What a waste of meat.
Book Giveaway: 'Clean Plates NYC'
Energy Kitchen. The bison cheesesteak wrap is yummy and healthy.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I like the half smokes or, more often than note, a standard 7-11 Big Bite with lots of chili, cheese, and their onion relish.
One Dozen Trader Joe's Eggs, Each with a Double Yolk
I just bought a dozen jumbos from Food Emporium (Union Square), and the first 2 I cracked also had double yolks. I'm afraid to bust up any more of them!
Best NY Food blog
MidtownLunch and NYCFoodGuy are tops for 'real' people who eat in the city, IMO.
Coat Check Tipping in the Recession
And if you choose not to use a service that's provided, then that is your choice. Ilove all these people here telling others that they 'should' check their coats, ans saying or implying that there's an obligation to provide financial support to a coatcheck person, or to prevent the restaurant from looking unsightly. Huh? If I'm wearing a decent long winter coat, I'll check it. (And tip the checker.) If it's a short coat, I'll keep it on my chair. If someone doesn't make enough coat check tips, let them find a different job. And if a restaurant doesn't like the sight of coats on chairs or coathooks, let them institute a mandatory coat check policy. (I which case I would probably find other places to spend my dining out money.)
Bottom line: If you want to check your coat, you should do so and tip.If you don't want to, don't let any of the nannies here guilt you into it.
Frank Bruni on Corner Bistro and Shake Shack
Sorry, ESNY. Simon didn't see it so it can't be true. Remember: Simon Says, and we all have to obey.
The Return of the $2 Slice?
I just walked by a place on 6th Ave around 15th St that is offering $1 slices for a while. It was a small sub/pizza shop. (No, it's NOT the 2 Bros. $1 pizza place at 6th and 18th--I already know that one well.)
Union Square Falafel Battle: Maoz, Pita Joe, Moshe's, and Rainbow
I've seen the Moshe's truck on 6th Ave around 19th St. a few times this past month. Don't know if that was a temporary location or what. There's a Chickpea also on 6th Ave by 22nd St. Both are on the east side of 6th Ave. Not quite Union Square, tho.
Maoz does have the caramelized cauliflower, and it's excellent!
Does Lyla's Cafe Creperie Serve the Best Burger in NYC?
nacho, stop trying to derail this topic!
...oh wait, nevermind. I haven't tried the burger. I have a friend who lives in that 'hood, so I might stop by. Seems like a decent meal.
Does Lyla's Cafe Creperie Serve the Best Burger in NYC?
Hey! This page has been elevated to the status of a "comment war"! At least according to an entry on a certain pretentious-but-claiming-not-to-be blogger's site. lmfao
The Hamburger Fatty Melt, a Burger with Two Grilled Cheese Sandwiches as Its Bun
Lettuce? Whaddya, crazy? Why? It adds nothing. Maybe some arugula (strong flavor) under the burger if you need a built-in salad, but plain old lettuce would just disappear.
But tomato in the grilled cheeses sounds good. Gotta have tomato on a cheeseburger.
I'm thinking maybe blue and swiss/Gruyère/Comté for the cheeses (one each), if not all extra-sharp cheddar. If using jalapeño cheddar (or better yet, habanero cheddar), only in one sammy, plain cheddar on the other. Otherwise the chiles will overwhelm everything else.
Bacon only if using cheddar. And not too much. Still have to taste the burger. Balance is important.
The Bacon Hamburger Fatty Melt, a Bacon Burger with Two Bacon-Stuffed Grilled Cheese Sandwiches as Bun
mini-barf, but what a tasty mini-barf indeed...
One Dozen Trader Joe's Eggs, Each with a Double Yolk
We bought a flat (20) last week from a local organic market and had the same thing happen. All 20 eggs were double yolked. It was the weirdest thing.
One Dozen Trader Joe's Eggs, Each with a Double Yolk
Whoa - I want that dozen of eggs!!! The yolk is my favorite part!
Eat This Now: Massive Pretzels at the Standard Beer Garden
I don't think a food item very healthy if the item in question is bigger than your head.
Just sayin'!

Oh my, WHEN are THEY going to come up with that magic pill? Can you imagine this creation with a side of fettucine Alfredo?
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Yeah, I'll second the Taqueria y Fonda -- haven't tried the others people mention, but it's cheap, it's very friendly, and the tacos and main dishes in particular are excellent.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
I would like to see a naked emperor, I think that would be neat and a good anecdote to share over fried chicken of any provenance and expense.
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
El Paso Taqueria on Lex & 104th street. Best I've had since we moved from SF.
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Taqueria y Fonda la Mexicana -- Amsterdam btw 107 and 108. Closest I've had to the Mexican in Houston.
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Tehuitzingo is the best, in my opinion. I miss the days of living right up the block and eating there 3-4 times a week. The suadero, lengua and carnitas tacos are my favorite, and much better then most of the other tacos I've had in NY. Zaragoza is also very good, as well as Taco Mix on 116th
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
I put in a third vote for Downtown Bakery. Hands down my favorite.
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Benny's Burrito an oldtime favorite. Yola in Williamsburg. And maybe not cheap but sooo Delicious Mexicana Mama on Hudson Street in the WV (their Mole Tacos are too die for).
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
I second Downtown Bakery, my favorite quick Mexican food in the city actually:

What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Between 14th and Canal, there is nothing better than Zaragoza, on Ave. A between 13th and 14th. Can't go wrong with 3 Tacos and a Modelo Especial tallboy, or the Mexican flag decorated burritos. If they have beef tongue, don't skip it.
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
I may catch some heat for this, but I like Lupe's on 6th Ave and Watts a lot. It's pretty bare bones Mexican, but from what I've heard, fairly authentic. Super cheap too - but cash only.
What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
Anyone know a good place between 14th and Canal? (And please don't say Pinche, which is really overrated)
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
Just had the Fried Chicken, and it lives up to all the hype!
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
I just tried to make a reservation. No luck! :(
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
Question: how played out and blase are "The Emperor Has No Cloths" jabs?
Answer: VERY!
::yawn::
I would pay 12.50 for a share of that spread in a heartbeat. This is a fine value for $ in NEW YORK CITY. I guess it helps that I don't have to eat like a pig to be satisfied with my expendeture. And the month thing isn't a big deal, just plan ahead! who cares! it's not a restriction, though I guess it does give people who need to complain about something something to complain about.
Sidenote: unless you are eating Popeyes (which is fine), most fried chicken in this city is pretty expensive, expecialy the korean variety.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
I personally find this silly... I've had alot of communal fun, watching the game and eating good cheap wings with friends at many cool spots... And i am sure you can find cheaper better quality fried chicken and not have to wait a month... But thats just me :/ I haven't been bit by the "I need to eat at that scene" bug.. If you somehow think its a good deal, wanna round up seven people to eat fried chicken, and put in the reservation, go for it and enjoy!
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
The reservation is not pure hype; because of the way Momofuku Noodle seats their guests, they couldn't reliably do walk-ins of more than four people or so. The low number of reservations leaves plenty of tables for their otherwise walk-in only policy.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
1month + to get a table for a fried chicken dinner? Better be damn good.
Vendy Award Finalist: Rickshaw Dumplings
I love the edamame dumplings. I hate the fact that they never park near Astor Place anymore...
