Any thoughts on the new rules on transfats at NY eateries?
Companies are going to be taking a hard look at their bottom lines after this. Trans Fats keep down costs, now these guys are going to have to make up that loss somewhere else. Something has to give. Kinda scary that the Government needs to be involved, human beings would eat themselves into an early extinction. Gee thanks Bloomberg and Company. Now everyone go eat some fried foods for the health conscience mayor.

I just moved to Washington (how did I miss Ben's) I make a trip once a year all over the states just to eat at places like Ben's. I am used to the destroyed stomach feeling! I love it. Leaving for Ben's half smoked yeah

Check out Nessy Burger just north of San Diego, Ca. off the I-15 exit hwy 76. this place is known for it's simple but delicious fare. I've tried the rest you need to try the best! This place is a little trailer on the side of the road and you eat at picnic tables that you might share with a neighbor. Nothing special about the ambience...unless you like the great outdoors..fun place.

And I just noticed that its 18 and older only...I didn't know that.

I don't know if anyone mentioned The VORTEX Bar and Grill in Atlanta. They claim to have the best burger in ATL. And my husband and I DO love their burgers. The two locations have a biker/goth atomsphere and its awesome. Please try "The Vortex" if you're in the ATL area.
I also love Fuddruckers, but it seems like it tasted a lil better in NM. Its got that Southwestern taste and the green chili burger, YUM! And try to review the In-and-Out Burgers (I wish we had one here). I"m craving an In and Out burger right now!
Mid-Range Burgers
Fuddruckers is really the best, but they closed in our area (Bucks County,PA) Second best is Outback and Cheesburger in Paradise (which are owned by the same company). Still looking for another Fuddruckers.
Mid-Range Burgers
Dude, forget those above, they suck. Seriously though Ruby Tuesday's is the only chain burger that I have eaten that will not only serve it rare, the way meat was intended to be eaten. but it is also Prime. They also have one of the best salad bars I have seen.
If you ever make it out to western Montana try a place in Hamilton called Naps, they will also serve your burger rare. One of the best I have had.
Mid-Range Burgers
@casmil226 - I agree, Logan's makes a great burger. I think it's the best thing on the menu.
Houston's and J. Alexander's also make delicious burger.
Mid-Range Burgers
When you survey the remaining restaurants be sure to include Chili's! Chili's has excellent burgers! I can honestly say I've never had a bad burger at Chili's. Unfortunately Ruby Tuesday's depends on the location.........not very consistent between restaurants. I loved the food in Bessemer AL at Ruby Tuesday's but it was HORRIBLE at the one near Loudon TN.........
For fast food, Wendy's seems to be the best. For sit-down dining Chili's is my top pick........
Mid-Range Burgers
I would try Max & Erma's. I know there are locations in PA but they are worth it. I am picky and while I like Red Robin you can't compare to Max & Erma's. The only other comparison was the Ground Round back in the day when they had like a WinSchulers soft cheese topping. They stopped doing it back in the late 70's and after trying them twice after the change I never would go back.

I don't know if there is one nearby, but oddly enough I think Logan's Roadhouse (it's a steakhouse) has excellent burgers. Ofcourse I don't think they would cook it MR, but I think they still kick toosh.
Mid-Range Burgers
Please take time to review Fuddruckers. I am very picky about my burgers, and they have the best of all the national chains I've tried. You gotta love a place that actually offers a full one pound burger patty!
Mid-Range Burgers
I too recommend Fuddruckers. I am not sure if this franchise is back east but Hamburger Hamlet is also a Red Robin level burger place.
I think its also important to add that at Red Robin you can order your burger Protein Style. They serve this as a low carb option (no bun wrapped in lettuce) and with a salad instead of fries.
Mid-Range Burgers
I'm not entirely sure if there are other locations outside of california, but there are at least a couple lin the bay area It's called Kirk's Steakburgers. They have the most tender hamburgers i've ever eaten, and you only recieve the patty and the bun from the cook. You get to choose from a variety of sauces and condiments to put on your burger yourself.

brian- well put. the veggie chili cheese fries destroyed my stomach (in a good way), one very late night a few summers ago when i came through DC on tour. i ate my buddy's leftovers the next morning, hungover, and they still managed to be delicious, even in their sad, congealed state.
The New Nationals Dog: Washington D.C.'s Half Smoke
I simply cannot WAIT to stuff my face with one of these gems when I finally go see my first game on 4/9. Thanks for the tasty preview!

Ben's also has some very tasty veggie chili (with surprisingly meat-like chunks of texturized vegetable protein) and the related addictive chili fries that seem to taste best at 2 in the morning. Both these dishes are popular among DC's non-meat-eating populations--black, white and otherwise.
Mid-Range Burgers
I've been in Texas for 2 years and apparently a great Texas burger is a very thin, wide, well-done cooked piece of meat, and sometimes topped with tostadas or beans, etc (man, that's funny!)...definitely not my "thing". However, even though MOST of the folks in Texas don't seem to know much about great burgers (for god's sake Whataburger is the most popular burger chain here and they are awful). There is a really good local place that just opened up calleD BIGZ Burger Joint. Although most locals will slam the place because it's owned by a popular local gourmet chef and it caters to the local Hummer yuppie crowd, the burgers here are thick (each patty is 8 oz), cooked perfectly as a burger should be just as the menu says "with a little pink inside unless requested otherwise" , juicy and very, very tasty. It actually gives Fuddruckers, which is by far and away one of the best burgers you can get ANYWHERE, a run for its money.
Mid-Range Burgers
Although I can't endorse Steak 'n Shake (I've tried them at two locations and they were average burgers to me), I do give a thumbs-up to Fuddrucker's. Several people mentioned that they used to be better (I agree) but they still can make a good burger.
One place I haven't seen mentioned is a chain that's mainly in the South (but expanding) called Backyard Burgers. I've been to two locations and one is better than the other but both offer a tasty burger. They use Angus beef and the toppings are always fresh. A regular cheeseburger is delicious but you can also get a 'Black and Blue' burger that has a blue cheese topping or a portobello and Swiss burger that is excellent. They have a website with pics of some of their offerings. Just search 'Backyard Burgers' and you'll find it. They have other menu offerings that aren't included on the website.
Mid-Range Burgers
Chili's, Uno and great hand ground, fresh bacon cheeseburgers at Plan B Burger, West Hartford, Ct.

Another recommendation for "The Counter" (web: thecounterburger.com)... if you can make it to one of their few locations. I was a happy customer in Plano for a few months before I moved. Good meat, not overcooked, and with a wide choice of toppings. I think you'll find it good competition for Red Robin and Ruby Tuesday.
Mid-Range Burgers
Try a restaurant chain called: 'ninety-nine' or 99 - (I'm in Mass & I think they're in New York too)
I had a really great cheesburger there last week, and I was pleasantly surprised at how really great it was. Maybe I just got lucky!
And regarding APPLEBEE's... I too had my first & last burger there about a month ago. It was so salty I only ate about 3 bites and had to stop. So GROSS

Mid-Range Burgers
A burger joint that My wife and I like is down here in Altanta. But the chain started in Washington D.C. It's called 5 Guys Burgers. The burgers are hand made and the meat is a very good quality. The ingredients are also very nice. No soggy lettuce or mealy tomatoes. One thing I like is that the fries are made fresh every day. They are not flash frozen and trucked in. In fact in the front of the store you can actually see them cooking your burgers in a pretty clean atmosphere and making the fries.
When it comes to burgers I really believe that the K.I.S.S. principal rings true. The best burgers are simple no avocado or chipolte cheese or wasabi mayo just honest down to earth ingredients that are fresh. I think alot of restaurants want to out- fancy their competitors and offer ridiculous
sides or over the top ingredients. In many cases I feel they are masking
inferior product. Like the Jack Daniel's everything at TGI Fridays. You don't need organic beef or artisanal bread buns to make a good hamburger you just need flavor, freshness and simplicity!!

Hello
Im from Rio Grande City, Texas, but now I live in San Diego, California. I have two suggestions for the burger taste test. The first one is WHATABURGER they are found in Texas maybe one in Oklahoma some in New Mexico and Arizona. Whataburger is 100% American ground beef with the bun lightly toasted or ordered to your preference. The lettuce is always fresh as the tomatoes and the fries are great crispy and golden. I have never eaten one that i had to complain or met any one that said differently about it. Other people that I have met that are not from Texas said when they drove through Texas they tried it and they loved it I think you would be pleased after havong one. They have regular, double, triple, or WB Jr. The other one is IN N OUT Burger which i think they are mainly in California. Their burger are not as big as TGIF´s or those kinds of resturants that have big burgers, but the taste is worth every bite. They have from a regular burger to a 4x4 four meat four chesseburger. The burgers same as Whataburger, In n out burgers are made when ordered. They also make their fries they are not frozen you can even see as one the cooks slices the potatoes with the slicer. I think you should really travel down to Texas and California and have one of these burgers. Every time I go home i dont eat any other burger than WB and on the way back i pick some up for the road, but they never make it to California.
Mid-Range Burgers
I would have to recommend trying Five Guys. I am not sure if they are up in NY area or not. I live in NC, but it's kinda a fast food place, but the burgers there are superb. It pretty much only serves burgers, fries, and hot dogs. All are awesome! So I am not sure if they fit into the type of restaurants you're comparing, but if you're looking for the best burger out there, it rocks!
