The Ultimate Carrot Cake

The 3 layer carrot cake with prailine filling and cream cheese frosting from Ann Hodgman's Beat This cookbook is by far the best I have ever had. If you cut into 12 pieces (each is 31 WW points).

A Good Set of Knives

My favorite is my Wusthof trident 10" chef's knife. I use it for almost everything despite having several other quality knives. Check out cookingforengineers.com for a good review of different knives.

Splenda Skirmish After Sugar Lobbyists Fund Study

As a neuropsychologist, I conducted a single case ABAB design over the past year with myself as the subject.

A=a lot of splenda
B=no splenda

I had been a voracious consumer of splenda until about January (A). I had been having trouble controlling my weight and I was having frequent migraines. I stopped consuming all sweeteners (B). Sweet cravings went away and so did the migraines (and all headaches for that matter). In August, I thought, I've got this licked, I can do it, so I started with Splenda again (A). Within a couple of weeks, the sugar cravings really kicked in and I gained about 25 pounds. The headaches also started again. I gave it up and have now lost those pounds and I am not having migraines (B).

For me, I won't be repeating the "experiment." Real butter, real sugar, and otherwise real ingredients. BTW, even milk tastes sweet when you don't oversweeten everything. I never understood in the past when people said things were too sweet. I get it now.

One Trick Pony Restaurants

OK, I actually went to bed thinking about this last night (sad, I know). I would open a grilled cheese restaurant. Just think of the possibilities. You could have the sample Mild Cheddar or Colby on White bread, but you could also do much more whimsical and creative sandwiches as well. For the vegans you could have Grilled Soycheese. If any of you start this, please cite me in the liner notes of your menu.

One Trick Pony Restaurants

How about a restaurant with just pizza! (oh wait, that's been done).

How about a restaurant that features butter in every recipe--you could call it "Lady & Sons"

A Good Set of Knives

I have a set of.......get ready for this......Martha Stewart. I bought a set of 4 about 8 years ago. Forged stainless steel, Full tang & Riveted handles. Heavy and great balance. I was shocked when we found them but I have been very happy with the performance. They keep a nice edge that I maintain with a steel every few uses. I have added a serrated and carver over the years but these 4 are the core of what I use. The chefs is one of the most comfortable knives I have ever used. I also have a Henckel 8" chefs and 3" pairing knife that do not have near the heft or feel.

I guess you can find the quality and feel you are looking for without paying top dollar for a big name.

The Ultimate Carrot Cake

Some tips for the carrots;
Don't grate them in a food processor. They come out too heavy. By hand is best for really thin flakes.
Also dry the gratings. It lends to a less dense but decadent cake.
Happy birthday!

Banquet frozen cream pies. They used to cost about 25 cents and were really good to eat half frozen. Anybody remember those?

God I loved Fizzies as a kid! Cola and Root Beer Mmmmm. Also a powdered drink mix called 'Funny Face' Goofy Grape and Freckle Face Strawberry was my fav's. I used to and still love Necco wafers (not a candy kids gravitated too). Space Dust / Pop Rocks were good esp. if you chanced the urban myth on a dare and swallowed a whole pack to see if your stomach would explode. LOL! My all time fav though in the toxic waste I ingested as a kid has to be a cereal from the late 60s called 'Kaboom' kind of like Honey Comb's but dyed with fluorescent colors and caked in sugar. When you added milk all the dye leached out into this colorfull swirl. No wonder I was able to walk on the ceiling during the first few hours of class. LOL! Great site btw!

You can go to fizzies.com and order any flavor you like! My favorite is cherry or grape. By the case for $12 or 15 - I can't remember. But what I miss the most are those giant Charms lollipops - I was proposed to with a handful of Charms Cherry because I was always seen with one stuck in my mouth! I was in the Army and they were at the ice cream store on base and one day an officer said I should at least take the sucker out of my mouth with I salute!
