Bottled Barbeque Sauce

@ktmeyers, I checked to see if Shealy's has a website and was sort of surprised that they do and you can order the sauce from them.

Bottled Barbeque Sauce

@bareneed, in the Columbia area, you can get Shealy's bbq sauce (mustard or vinegar) at some of the groceries. Maurice's (may be available at the grocery too) isn't too bad and Hudson's has a really good sauce and they also have mustard and vinegar based at their restaurants in Lexington.

Drink the Book: 'Jelly Shot Test Kitchen'

Unfortunately I haven't had or made any interesting flavors. I am considered the "jello girl" at our football tailgate and usually make over 100 shots for every game. This book would be awesome, although I'm not sure I would share these fancy shots with the greedy tailgate crowd!

Learning to cook

When my son who could barely make a grilled cheese went out of state to college, I made a binder for him of the easiest recipes that I make for my family. I went shopping for him and bought all the spices he would need for the recipes along with basic pantry items. When he pulls the binder out to make something for the first time, he usually calls me a bazillion times while he's cooking it, but I'm proud to say that he's learning and I know he feels great when the dish turns out good!

Eat out or stay in and cook, which do you prefer?

We almost always eat in and cook. Dinner out occasionally is a welcomed treat!

No wedding cake -- a new trend???

I got remarried last summer and being a single mom with one kid in college and one on the way to college, I didn't want the expense of a wedding cake. Since I was catering my own reception, my husband to be built a cupcake stand and my son, girlfriend and I made about 300 cupcakes. I chose brown and green for my colors so I had my girlfriend make her pistachio cake recipe while my son and I made chocolate cupcakes and we also made carrot cake cupcakes, as that's my husband's favorite. Everyone thought it was a great idea, including my sweet southern MIL and my 89 year old grandmother!

ISO Crockpot mac and cheese

@RegrettableFoodie, I have both under cooked and over cooked the noodles and they come out fine. The texture of the dish is more firm than creamy. Hope that helps!

ISO Crockpot mac and cheese

Here's a crockpot mac & cheese recipe I use all the time (I started using this recipe to free up oven space at holidays) and everyone loves it! I'm sure I usually add more salt and cheese than what it calls for but that's just me. And you could certainly use other cheeses or add ins to each individual preference.

1-8oz box elbow noodles cooked & drained
1-12oz can evaporated milk
1 ½ cups milk
1T salt
Black pepper to taste
3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
¼ cup melted margarine
2 eggs

Mix all ingredients together. Put into a greased crockpot. Add extra cheese to top. Cook 3-4 hours on low.

If you double the recipe, do not double the amount of butter.

How to Make Barbecue Beef Brisket That Doesn't Suck

@arbeck hope you enjoy Hudson's Smokehouse when you get to SC. We love it! When I made my own pulled pork for my wedding reception last month, I sent my son to Hudson's to get their mustard bbq sauce! They have a good vinegar sauce too, but it's a little spicy for me!

For anyone that doesn't have a smoker for the brisket, The Pioneer Woman has an awesome recipe and it's very easy! I've made that recipe several times and it always turns out great!

You might be a foodie if....

-when you print several recipes off the computer at work before beginning to work and several times throughout the day (almost every day)
-when you've got stacks and stacks of those recipes that you've printed off the computer that need to be three-hole punched and organized into binders
-when some of your "friends' only call you because they need a recipe
-when your best friend's children want to plan a girls day at the pool but you have to be invited because they know you always bring great snacks

Reducing Food Costs: Cooking with a Friend

That's a great idea! I haven't cooked meals with a friend, but have split grocery shopping before (buy one get one). I'm not a very good meal planner, except for the fact that I do shop by the weekly grocery ads. Recently I cooked a roast and a boston butt in the crock pot and used the leftovers to make different meals such as quesadillas, open face sandwiches, philly cheese steak sandwiches, bbq sandwiches. It's really helped with grocery costs, since it seems I spend an awful lot for three people and really only two of us are home to eat!
