Sallys and Pepes give you a "slice" (pun intended) of New Haven culture. If you want to chat it up with the staff at Sallys, you really have to know them previously. Also, if you know what you are doing and place an excellent order of pies, they will complement you and you will gain immediate respect from them.

They ignore the out-of-towners who come in expecting to get served a pie as if it were a normal restaurant. Sallys is above that- this is not your typical establishment. People need to come in expecting bare bones service, long waits, and great pies to make up for the first two.

Bottom line- if you can't handle waiting and being slightly uncomfortable, dont go to Sallys. But you'll miss out on the best pies in the world.

Although I have failed to review either on my site (worstpizza), I did both places within 2 days while visiting Yale and Mohegan Sun. Pepes, had just as disappointing of a staff as Sally's. I asked for no ice in my coke, and when they brought it with ice I asked her to remove the ice, and she put it by the oven to melt. Total lack of class. I don't care how busy you are, you still need to be decent.

I did not like sally's at all! My family loved it, but I was freaking hot, uncomfortable and they didn't give plates! If I return to the area I will go back to Pepe's.
