"Bad habits" I've developed from my time in the service industry

Cary, I am totally with you - I have not served in five plus years and I still catching myself wiping my hands on my clothes at times. That darn invisible apron!!

I also second the crumbs on the floor thing - or maybe it's just a way to justify my slovenly behaviour;)

What sides to eat with a basic pizza?

I always think that Friday is the perfect day for a homemade pizza meal.

I usually make a simple arugula salad dressed with lemon, olive oil and salt. I eat it on the side, or sometimes pile it on top of my thin crust margahrita pizza (made with lots of anchovies and fresh basil). Clams as a starter also sounds great to me. And a couple of nice big glasses of Italian red wine. Would be lovely followed up with some treats from a local bakery. Let the weekend begin!

Dinner Tonight: Crisp Chipotle Shrimp with Corn and Scallions

Yup, this is no gratin. I also think Panko has transcended it's Japanese roots as well, and use it almost anywhere a little crunch, or breadcrumbs are required.

This looks delicious though, and I suppose that the shrimp are nice and juicy from the mayonnaise. Nice!

Dinner Tonight: Hummus with Ground Lamb and Almonds

Pine nuts are so expensive! I have been using almonds for pesto all summer as well.

This recipe looks great - I always use canned chickpeas for hummus. And the addition of cinnamon here = super tasty.

Re: using a blender for hummus. For me, a food processer is the way to go. Easy peasy!

Cook the Book: 'Around My French Table'

My favorite (and semi local) eating vacation is always Portland, Oregon. The food scene there is *incredible.* On my last trip in August, we passed through Portland twice, each for a quick 16 hour stop.

Trip 1: The Whisky Soda Lounge for incredible cocktails (mine with whiskey and rhubarb bitters), then Pok Pok for the best Thai dinner of my life. In particular, the prawns and noodles in a clay pot, with a gorgeous smoky sticky caramelized bottom, and an incredible bar snack of wild boar collar. The next day: street food touring in the Mississippi district and happy hour oysters at Eat.

Trip 2: The best meal of my life (seriously) at Le Pigeon (http://www.lepigeon.com/) including foie gras ice cream profiteroles for desert. And breakfast the next day: ridiculously good chicken and waffles, and a fried oyster Benedict at the Screen Door. The screen door was well worth the one hour wait (and this coming from a lady who does not believe in waiting for a meal).

My dream eating vacations are: Spain, Cambodia and New York city. Here's hoping I can make that happen soon!

Wonderful! I would be sure to barely cook the salmon, myself. This looks fresh and gorgeous.
