How Do You Eat Street Food? One Grad Student's Answer
She looks pretty cute!
Raising the Bar: Banh Mi at Terroir?
FAIL. The price point alone is a failure. I won't even go into other fails.
Off the Beaten Path: Naeng Myun at Han Song Ting’s New Digs
I think this departs too much from tradition too much to be considered Nang Myun. The buckwheat noodle is a must! Maybe it should be Chinese Nang Myun. Its funny how Chinese took back the dish that they gave us to be modified back.

What The Yankees Ate Before The World Series Win
That should be enough for CC. Brett Gardner will sit at the kid's table for scraps.

The traditional Korean version just don't cut it anymore in the new world of super sweetness and fatness. I welcomed the additional trappings of Western world.

Man, that was a total fat-athon. Tasty but I am glad I don't live close by. I would also stick to non-mystery meats.
I am curious about the vans selling cerviche. How good and how fresh are they?
Hanco's Park Slope Lowers Banh Mi Price to $6.50
$3.50 at Pho Bang in Flushing. In good old days, it used to be $2.50. I asked the owner how many he sell in a day. About 500.
Roosevelt Food Court's Eyili Kabab King Shuts Down
A very nice guy. I didn't get a chance to try his food but maybe when he opens his restaurant.
Speaks fluent Chinese (not sure which one) but he recognized that me and my father were Korean so he showed off his Korean skills as well. He seems like he has lots of interesting stories to tell about his days back home. He really looks slightly Asian. Whatever that means. I wish him all the luck and hope to see him at his new place!! What The Yankees Ate Before The World Series Win
I wonder what the White Sox (the team for all right-thinking people) eat before a game. My guess is a Polish with mustard and kraut, an IB (cheesy dipped combo, please), a couple of hot dogs, and a large well of tater tots with a queso dipping sauce, all washed down with an Old Style or two. Because you see, the White Sox live in food heaven. I guarantee they don't regularly eat lobster paella. No paella can match a Comiskey dog on a sunny day.
The pizza they save for after the game. A large from Malnati's, with sausage (flat, please).

Reading is fun!
What The Yankees Ate Before The World Series Win
@redfish and lemonfair: Yes, this is a scaled-down version. The intent is to provide the recipe, not to provide the scale that could feed an entire baseball team.
What The Yankees Ate Before The World Series Win
Agree this must be scaled down. one shrimp for every 2 people? 5 guys don't get a mussel? And that assumes the coaches and manager don't get fed, only the team.
What The Yankees Ate Before The World Series Win
CC probably ate everyone that had a taste! Just kidding! Congrats to my boys on #27!!!
Raising the Bar: Banh Mi at Terroir?
@sherrypie - Misspelled menu items sometimes crack me up. Cellphone noodles instead of cellophane noodles was a recent good one.
@Joe DiStefano - That roll just seems so wrong.
@sanhedrin - Was is worth it? Not if you go expecting a banh mi. Definitely not.
Raising the Bar: Banh Mi at Terroir?
I've been seeing a number of these "fancified" (or re-interpreted) banh mis pop up, what with the growing popularity of Asian sandwiches - kind of like the sudden explosion of $11+ Cubanos that happened a few years ago. And just like that epidemic of Cuba-fauxs, I expect to be disappointed in 90% of them - either because they're identical to sandwiches one can get mere blocks away for half the price, or because they wander a bit too far in their attempts to re-interpret, and wind up missing out on what made the original idea so special to begin with.
But the real question is: is it worth $11? Given that from the looks of it there's only half the meat you might get at Nicky's or Baoguette, I'm tempted to say I'm not gonna bother finding out.
Raising the Bar: Banh Mi at Terroir?
Reminds me of a another wannabanh mi: the one at Blind Tiger Ale House.
Raising the Bar: Banh Mi at Terroir?
lol. "banh mi not." So classic! I agree, it is so not a bahn mi. Also, one of my biggest peeves is mis-spelled menu items. I love bahn mis and I must say, I will definitely not be trying an italian bahn mi.
Raising the Bar: Banh Mi at Terroir?
@Adam - Yeah, it's quite misleading when you see it on the menu. It should be called, "Banh Mi Not."
@dgl440 - I think they set themselves up for failure by calling it a "Banh Mi Italiano." Especially when they're in the East Village and Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches is a few blocks away.
Off the Beaten Path: Naeng Myun at Han Song Ting’s New Digs
Just a note: naengmyun noodles are usually a mixture of buckwheat AND potato starch to give it its chewy texture (it's not the same as regular buckwheat you would buy for soba—if you want to make it at home, there are separate noodles specifically sold for naengmyun).
Not using the usual noodles totally throws it out of the naengmyun category for me, since the noodles are what makes the dish, but this sounds intriguing. Maybe more like reimen, though?
Off the Beaten Path: Naeng Myun at Han Song Ting’s New Digs
This might be within the range of what the Chinese consider to be NaengMyun, but it is surely wouldn't be considered to be such by the vast majority of Koreans. From the wheat flour noodles, cilantro, star anise, etc... its uses all kinds of ingredients you would never find in a bowl of Korean Noodles. Perhaps the Chosonjok (Korean-Chinesee) in Manchuria might consider this to be more typical.
Now to be fair, it should be noted that the Chinese characters which Koreans pronounce (NaengMyun) simply mean "Cold Noodles," so really it could be any noodle dish that is cold.
If you ever happen to be in Shenyang and have a hankering for Korean NaengMyun, I would stick to places run by the North Korean government. It is really quite an experience.
