In New Brunswick, New Jersey, Stage Left Makes Burgers from Steak Scraps
Am I missing something...where is this place featured in George's book?

I read this and say "Why didn't I think of that?"
This is like the days when my father would tell me that Hoboken brownstones were going for $30k. You never think of it at the time...
I will be in Memphis in August and this is already listed as a stop. Been curious about it since I seen it on the Hamburger America documentary. The fact that they don’t change the grease sounds disgusting but for some odd reason I can’t imagine it being bad.
totally agree bud...I'm actually a ketchup with a slight touch of mustard guy myself.
I think the year round shack loses some of that spring time love you have for the burger. Now with it branching out I hope the quality stays the same.
Sounds like you continue to torture yourself by visiting this site. Take the plunge...everything will be ok. You know you want it.
I had Bartley's a few months ago while in Boston. The place was packed. The burger menu is a bit overwhelming however I decided to go classic...lettuce, tomato, onion and american cheese. I really thought it was a flavorless burger. Maybe I didn't enjoy it much because I was drinking guinness all day and the place does not have a bathroom.
This place is my home away from home...I've been to alot of places and ate alot of burgers (probably not as much as adam) and this place is # 1. The flavor is unlike any other burger. This is where the goodness is.
look like white manna w/ lettuce and tomato. Neither of which belong on a manna burger. grilled onions and pickles...that's it.
Also known as a "Grandma Pie", no? There is a place in Lyndhurst, NJ called Mr. Bruno's. They are known for their "Square Pie" has it has come be known around those parts. They do the crust, cheese and sauce. It's very good.
You know what, I was here just yesterday , and per the recommendation of my gf, had a burger.
It was fantastic. Definitely worth a trip over.
I love Houston's. Plain and Simple. It's never disappointed and If I was forced to choose a place for my last meal, this would be it. Want to know why?
Hahaha. I, too, was watching this the other night. I loved every minute of it.
I can not view the clip from work, except I know exactly what's on it. I was watching last night & everything that came out of that guys mouth was sooo dirty. I know he did it on purpose. I thought it was a hoot.
To me a good burger is...
American cheese (NO cheddar)
Mayo
Heintz only ketchup
Bacon (if crisp)
Toasted Bun
Meat should be cooked med - well (the only meat that I eat beyond rarest possible)
PS - Hey Turkishjade, I dont want to hear "NYU" and "Poor" in the same sentence, unless you are an Adjunct prof!
That is a mighty delicious burger! You would never guess to order that at a place like Veselka, but there it is... a very delicious bacon cheeseburger. Are they good at doing medium rare now? Because the patty is thinner, they seem to veer towards medium+ since they try to get that char on the outside.
Okay, I'm going to get reamed for this, but I have to share...
You guys talk about ketchup, mayo, mustard...
When I was a young, hungry and broke (in other words, attending NYU,) it was difficult to be able to afford quality anything, much less a burger. Whenever we heard someone was going out on a date, we would bribe him or her to order extra food and to bring back doggie bags so that we could share (which brings back loving memories of convincing people to go to the Great American Pancake House so they could bring back HUBCAP sized pancakes for the whole dorm to share.)
Since doggies bags didn't stretch to the whole dorm floor very well, a few of us were introduced to a special burger only found at Blimpie's.
Yep, Blimpie's. And I love me a Meridian Burger Shack burger, a Shake Shack burger, etc., but this burger holds a special place in my heart.
It was their sole hot 'wich. A 16oz microwaved slab of what appeared to be greasy Salisbury Steak, 12" hero bread cut in half, 6 slices of Cheddar Cheese (melted at the end) ... but the best part was it's toppings. The "perfect" mix was
Salad oil
Red Vinegar
Salt
Pepper
Shredded lettuce
THIN sliced onions
I've tried to make the magic happen at home, but I've never been able to get the same taste. If you get a chance and are in good enough health to want to experiment, give it a shot. Maybe then someone can figure out how to distill the best part of this mess into something I can use with better burgers?
Maybe, but it's not like the burgers don't stand on their own; Shake Shack burgers are totally amazing. I for one applaud the expansion as long as they keep the quality level up.
I've been in Texas for 2 years and apparently a great Texas burger is a very thin, wide, well-done cooked piece of meat, and sometimes topped with tostadas or beans, etc (man, that's funny!)...definitely not my "thing". However, even though MOST of the folks in Texas don't seem to know much about great burgers (for god's sake Whataburger is the most popular burger chain here and they are awful). There is a really good local place that just opened up calleD BIGZ Burger Joint. Although most locals will slam the place because it's owned by a popular local gourmet chef and it caters to the local Hummer yuppie crowd, the burgers here are thick (each patty is 8 oz), cooked perfectly as a burger should be just as the menu says "with a little pink inside unless requested otherwise" , juicy and very, very tasty. It actually gives Fuddruckers, which is by far and away one of the best burgers you can get ANYWHERE, a run for its money.
