Cook the Book: 'The Food Life'

I loved the Smith's (part of the Kroger network) by our house when we were students at Brigham Young University--they offered a student Plus Card that gave us 5-10% off our grocery order in addition to all of the Plus Card deals! It was a great value.

Hamburger Help in St. Petersburg, Russia!

I don't know of any burger places in St. Pete off the top of my head aside from the ubiquitous McDonald's, but if you make the overnight train trip to Moscow while you're there, head to the Starlite Diner, off Mayakovskaya Metro. The burgers are pricey but amazing--great for if you're feeling homesick!

Cooking With Kids: Eat Your Veggies

When I was a baby, squash baby food was my favorite ever, & I loved mushrooms. I avoided broccoli like the plague. I also disliked salad a lot.

I mostly had to start eating veggies when salads or veggie trays were placed in front of me in social situations, & I learned to love them! Ironically, broccoli is my absolute favorite veggie & I put it in everything. Squash I can only eat when it's well seasoned or disguised, & anything with mushrooms in it? Forget about it!

Delicious Mangosteens: Better Than a Hot Fudge Sundae?

Lots of people eat mangosteens because they've heard about the fruit's health-promoting properties. Unfortunately, the part with all of the antioxidants and xanthones (a special flavonoid that is supposed to work miracles) are contained in the fruit's pericarp, the gritty, nasty-tasting rind. So mangosteen antioxidant juice beverages often have little pieces of grit floating around in the liquid. Definitely not something I'd pass up an ice cream sundae for!

Food for a stressed student stomach?

My husband just finished his finals last week. I looked up "brain food" online & found that these foods (among others) help with alertness & overall brain function:
Yogurt
Olive oil
Spinach
Bananas
Blueberries
Nuts
So I made him eat yogurt & a banana for breakfast the mornings of his finals (he usually doesn't eat breakfast at all, so this is a big step), & tried to incorporate as many of the other ones as possible (like pesto or spinach salad or something) for dinner the night before.

What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?

C) all the way! You can't beat the taco trucks, taquerias that consistently earn B's & C's from the Health Dept., & hole-in-the-wall fish taco joints downtown, where no one speaks English. Talk about authentic! Makes me homesick.

As far as the winner for WORST Mexican food, Bloomington, IN takes the cake by far. In a town with Thai, Cajun Creole, Indian, and not one but TWO Tibetan restaurants, among other things, it's remarkable how terrible the Mexican is here.

In Design: Melamine: A Relic of Yesterday (with a Caveat for Today)

Williams-Sonoma has some fabulous melamine mixing bowls. They're not hip and retro or anything, but I have a set and can't live without them.

My favorite grocery store is Winn Dixie. They are the only store that I know of the has buy one/get one free deals on meat. Everything from chicken to steak to porkchops.

My other favorite store is Sav-A-Lot. I did a price comparison of them and the super Walmart. Sav-A-Lot is anywhere from 5-10 cents cheaper on items. They also take coupons on any name brand items.

Sorry to say, the area I live in does not have a lot of options. There is an Asian market about 50 minutes away that I go to when I need something special. Otherwise, it is a trip to my local Publix.
