Are you a serial sampler?

I sampled some cheddar cheese at a local store one day. The cheese was quite good but that night I spent in varying degrees of gastro-intestinal upset. Now I will not sample anything in the store unless it comes wrapped by manufacturer.

Worst self inflicted kitchen injury?

I wasn't paying attention when using my steel to hone my chef's knife. I missed the steel and hit the back of my hand. It opened it up past the first layer of skin. It took 3 stitches to close it and I still have the scar 26 years later.

What's the worst odor you've smelled in a restaurant?

Overflowing grease trap, I once worked in a resturant where the grease trap was overflowing in the kitchen and the owner wouldn't close the place. Not only did it smell horendous but it was like being on roller skates in the kitchen. One other smell is a waiter or waitress that smells like a dirty ashtray.

If you live close to southeast Iowa, then Sterzings is the best, they are a regional company that is based in Burlington IA. Get the salted, the ones with no salt, why bother.

Steak 'n Shake: The Quintessential American Cheeseburger

I love Steak and Shake. My thing is to sit at the counter and watch them prepare the burgers. I love the double steakburger with cheese,but will also enjoy the patty melt. If the fries are hot there is nothing better. The Steak and Shake in Quincy Illinois is the best.

After work a few years ago I stopped a Burger King and ordered a fish sandwich. I went through the drive-thru and when I was driving I bit into the sandwich and it was like hot molten lava burned the top of my mouth and it blistered. Wasn't the same for a few days.

Tell Your Asparagus Story

I Caved In and Ate Grocery Store Fried Chicken - Yuck!

I have found that at least the grocery store fried chicken in my area is way better than the stuff that they sell at KFC. The problem sometimes is that it sits under the heat lamps way too long either place.

What are you planting in your garden this year?

Lettuce, white radishes, peas, Kentucky wonder green beans, sweet corn, blackberries, 2 tomato plants, jalepeno pepper, and maybe something else if I have room. What I don't eat I will give to the food pantry at church.

Bacon grease

Eggs fried in bacon grease, that is a favorite from childhood. It comes from when people fried bacon in the skillet and when it was finished fired the eggs in it. It is not an everyday thing but once in a great while. Bacon grease can be used to cook any number of vegetables especiall green beans.
