that's my soup dumpling!
this is at Nan Xian Man Tou Dian in Shanghai. there was only broth inside with tiny bits of crab meat and roe. it was ok, not crazy good. i think the novelty of it is better than the actual flavor of the soup. you are not supposed to eat the dough, but i tried it. it was much like soggy pie crust.
the xlb here are not as good as the taipei chain, din tai fung. but this is supposed to be a landmark restaurant to visit while visiting shanghai.
I totally agree with dimsumfan. The giant xiao long bao are not that tasty, although hilariously huge. The dough is pretty thick and is really there to serve as a vessel, much like a coconut shell is for coconut juice. Also, the broth isn't nearly as intense in flavor as the smaller ones.
I had one of these at the famous Nanxiang xiao long bao place in Shanghai. The wrapper isn't anything special to eat... it really is about the broth. Given that, I really like the regular xiao long bao better - and those are better in Taipei than in Shanghai, from my experience.
how absolutely cool and beautiful... i'm thinking it's all abou the broth...
If it's anything like what Bourdain ate on his tv series, I don't think it's about eating the dumpling at all. It's about drinking the broth inside.
Wow, that is amazing! Almost too amazing to eat...I would find myself just staring at it in disbelief.
I don't think there's anything like that here. :( That giant soup dumpling is from Shanghai. Freakin' far. Dammit.
