Kitchen/Food Gifts. Are you a me first or you first?
I hate buying something willy-nilly unless A. I've tried it first or B. The giftee asked for it on their wishlist. I'm a gadgets and gizmos kind of person so the more the merrier in my bloated pantry. lol
My KitchenAid Artisan is sick...help!
I burned out two heavy-duty Kitchen-Aid stand mixers in the course of ten years. I now have a Viking 7-quart mixer and so far...so good. I make a LOT of bread at home so I'm probably not your average home cook. My dream machine though would be one of those big, mama-jama commercial hobart mixers. *dreaming*
Biggest food-related pet peeve?
I'm right with you on the steak. I don't like bloody steak but I love steak that is slightly raw in the middle then pink and then seared with a nice crust on the outside and yet not bleeding...tricky to do but that's my favorite way to eat steak.
My other peeve is over-cooked fish. Pretty much along the same lines as steak in the sense that having the center slightly raw and yet still cooked is culinary heaven when it's done just right. I'd always rather get my food a little more raw rather than overly cooked. I'll eat mine on the more raw side and still enjoy it and not even send it back whereas if I get an overcooked steak or piece of fish I just HAVE to send it back which I feel guilty about since I always hate wasting food. :( That's why I always order medium rare but my medium rare is not always the chef's medium rare and god love us all...we are ALL only human. lol
Another thing (speaking of over/under cooking) is rice... Undercooked rice is not even PALATABLE and overcooked rice? EGADS! GLUE!
My apologies if my spelling is atrocious. I have so much on my mind right now with the holidays coming up.

Do I dare stray from traditional holiday fare this season?
Thank you, Renzata! Tamales sound wonderful! I forgot to say I love Japanese and Chinese cuisine [Thai too]... Good gracious! I think it would be fun to try something new every other year and then that way I can keep the traditional stuff on the 'off years' without ruffling too many feathers. I'm so fortunate my daughter is willing to try and experiment with anything at least once [if not twice when I mess it up the first time ha-ha]!
Happy holidays and Happy cookin' too! Thank you again for the advice and encouragement! :)

Hottest New Accessory: Raw Meat
Gahhhhhhhhh. That's disgusting and especially the bacon/ham/whatever-pork-product one! Some people are beyond sick. lol

Canned vegetables (especially mushrooms) on pizza! It should be illegal. Mushrooms are easy to get, easy to cut, easy to work with. Do people actually like canned mushrooms! They are disgusting, rubbery, and slimy. Gross!!!!!!!
And I also really get upset if I order something with vegetables and I bite into it and find out that the vegetables are pickled. It should be stated on the menu.
Another pet-peeve is chain seafood and pizza restaurants. I'm talking about the Red Lobsters of the world, and the Pizza Huts. I live in New England. How can anyone in this region actually choose to eat at either of these places???

It sounds like a swell idea.
Once I prepared an Italian Passover meal and it worked out well. I think you need to pick one cuisine though and stick to it, rather than having a hodgepodge of cultures.
Good Luck and keep us posted as to your menu! I love to hear about unique holiday menus.

Dinner guests should be happy that a) they are invited and b) they don't have to do any of the prep. and clean up. What has happened to courtesy? I couldn't believe that one of my guests (a very educated woman) literally screamed "where's the turkey"? Very poor manners.

I have a couple of more:
Pork or chicken that contains "up to 12% solution" what is this mysterious solution that they inject into my meat and why do they expect me to pay for it?
Bad knives
Servers who do not have a clue as to what they are serving! (This was a pet peeve that started when I was working the back of the house - it drove me nuts that the wait staff did not take the time to learn the menu and that management did not follow through on making them!) "Why yes, I do want to know if your pesto is made with pignoli nuts or walnuts - it tastes totally different with the walnuts."

this is really disgusting.

First, I think these pieces are interesting. Not necessarily something I would own, but definately something I can appreciate and might go to see more of.
Now, put fur on all of these pieces, or change them from raw meat to leather, and the comments would probably be more like : "Wow! Where can I get that necklace!"
Guaranteed.

Hi.
I like your designs.
I need a tiara and I like baby lamb chops. Do I need to special order?
Thanks.
Also if you could tell me how much a crown would cost made from crown roast of pork. My boyfriend might need one.
Hottest New Accessory: Raw Meat
I still have not seen a reason posted on why this is "offensive".
Hottest New Accessory: Raw Meat
Offensive..this site is about good food, good memories and camaraderie..skip the controversial.
Hottest New Accessory: Raw Meat
Why is this offensive? We buy meat, we eat it, and we are somehow totally horrified when we are reinded that it comes from animals. That died.

Are these photos from the 2008 PETA calendar?

I've told the story many times of the year my mother was terminally ill, couldn't eat, although my stepfather needed to be fed, and I just couldn't face the traditional meal. So I did a menu from Paul Prudhomme with dirty rice, spicy potato salad, wonnnnnderful sweet potatoes and a pork roast. Adolescent daughter was hysterical, wouldn't come to the table. Once we got through the meal, sans daughter, went to mom's and brought stepdad food and stayed a while. We hadn't left the condo complex when daughter piped up from back seat, "Let's go home and eat leftovers!"

Bleah. AND what a waste of what I'm assuming was perfectly good meat/fish!

Interesting how chocolate (as in the body-paint that is widely available now) and whipped cream are considered marvelous additions in general, quite tittilating and acceptable foods to add to the idea of the unclothed body for most but meat however creates a sense of general disgust.
I will be sure to wear chocolate and whipped cream to the Prom.
And will remember to avoid wearing any meat.

Christmas Eve just wouldn't be Christmas Eve without the feast from the sea! My family would be in total revolt.
Absolutely. This is the most traditional holiday on the calendar for my family, with T-Giving running a close second.
I made the timpano from "Big Night" (of course on a smaller scale). It was so rewarding for me to pull it off. It took a few days, but was so worth it and so much more rewarding than any traditional Christmas meal.
I've always wanted to try that dish! It's really not too far a stray from tradition - like an incredibly laborious lasagna with a degree of difficulty through the stratosphere. It's still made of relatively traditional ingredients - but what a delivery!!

I have done a lot of different things for Christmas. (Two turkey dinners in a month is one too many). Try a stuffed crown roast of pork--very elegant. Another obvious and big favorite is prime rib and yorkshire pudding. But for the past ten years or so we have been stuck on Goose. It just feels so traditional! In our house we also have a traditional meal of cassoulet on Christmas eve--it takes a long time to cook and will be patiently waiting for last minute shopping, church, and caroling to finish.

Sorry, dont find it to be interesting. It is disturbing.
Biggest food-related pet peeve?
Sheeats, I would have to disagree with you on that. Maybe it's all due to the unfortunate ambiguity of the internet, but I read very many of the replies here to be veiled disses of other people's food habits.
On that note, i have an acquaintance who is oddly proud of the fact that her family eats only fast food, and never all together (ie., not even like the KFC commercials) because they are "too busy." It bugs me, almost saddens me.
Ok, my pet peeves =
- eating while standing over the sink (or counter)
- salsa that tastes like spaghetti sauce
- glass cutting boards
- glass dining tables
- food snobs (of any variety)
- my inability to cook eggplant
- fresh ginger (try as I might, I just can't learn to like it)
And I don't call this a pet peeve, because in my mind it reflects some sort of pathological mental upset (perhaps that is the textbook definition of a pet peeve, but I like to think they just can't help it so I try not to judge): I am utterly mystified by people who cannot allow their food to touch.

And then of course there's Meatpaper .
Meatpaper is a print magazine of art and ideas about meat. We like metaphors more than marinating tips. We are your journal of meat culture.
Seriously.
Biggest food-related pet peeve?
Fussy eaters and people who say they don't like something without even tasting. I usually give people something to taste without mentioning the ingredients - if they like it I share, if they don't like it... you know what, that has never happened.
I know this guy that won't touch food with anything green in it... I refuse to eat with him at the table... it's just too sad to see.

@intheyearofthepig, VerasTastyFreeze and kjgibson:
I think you took this talk item the wrong way. I didn't intend for this to be a judgy/snooty thread where we could talk about how stupid and dirty the plebes are for not having our superior culinary tastes. On the contrary, I believe that if you look at the majority of the comments you'll find that most peoples' pet peeves have to do with food they don't like to eat, as opposed to bashing the choices of others. Well, except for my original comment about well-done steaks, that is. :)
In a nutshell, lighten up.
Do I dare stray from traditional holiday fare this season?
2 ideas:
You could do your families traditional foods(to please those die hard traditionalists) with a themed twist maybe pick a country-region-cuisine-culture and use that as your creative point using spices/ingredients native to that culture. Gourmet(the turkey cover) this season had some nice suggestions- I remember a 5 spice turkey that looked intriguing.
Another strategy would be to tell your guests ahead of time that you are planning on doing something different than usual- It will also prepare them for something new and exciting... also that way you can gauge if there will be a total freakout or not. GOOD LUCK!
Biggest food-related pet peeve?
* brooke29 honestly, I thought I was the only person that was driven nuts by refrigerated tomatoes, because, yeah, why are they buying 10 lbs at a time?
* Runny eggs. If I see even the slightest movement in the white, I get queasy. I literally cannot watch people eat sunnyside up eggs. (I think that in this case, it's me, not them)
* Overcooked anything, especially meat/fish.
* Mayonnaise on ham sandwiches.
* Tinned vegetables
