What's your go-to dinner for one?

Place a chicken breast on a large piece of foil. Liberally sprinkle (chicken, not the foil) with pepper, ginger, garlic, dash of sugar. Add cream, soy sauce, top with chopped green onion. I use the entire bunch. Draw foil up and over, make a pouch. Bake @ 350. Serve with sauteed mushrooms.

Uh-uh. No. This is just wrong on so many levels.

What would you order?

The new one. You'll never find another sure thing unless you try it.

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

Fresh from the field. Shuck. Walk it directly to the cooking pot. Boil. 3 minutes, tops. Butter. Kosher salt. Perfection. Pure bliss.

Your food dislikes -- items or categories or methods or recipes?

In my opinion milk, as a drink, should be abolished. I didn't like it as an infant either, so please don't give me grief about growing bones/aging bones or small children! Cottage cheese would be next to go -- I refuse to ingest anything that looks like spit-up. I have yet to taste sushi (and probably won't) and although I still enjoy an occasional piece of bacon, I'm eating less and less meat these days. Other than that -- no, wait! bananas have a 5-minute window of eating opportunity, then they become bread or they're trashed -- I'm as fair-minded about food as anyone. No, wait! Did I mention mayonnaise?

popsicles, drumsticks, and ice cream sandwiches... oh my!

I like Snickers ice cream bars, and I'm also partial to Skinny Cow fudge bars. But nothing beats Talenti Belgian milk chocolate gelato (double dark is not yet available in my area).

Stick Blenders...

@brooke29 ... Thank you too! All this reassurance is just the excuse I need to buy a Braun. I've been coveting a stick blender for a long time.

From Talk

Stick Blenders...

@holdthemayo ... Thank you for the info! Transferring hot soups to a blender, returning them to the pot gets tedious. Still, Le Creuset is my pot of choice. Off to Google Braun, thanks again!

From Talk

Stick Blenders...

"... I forgot to mention that my older model Braun, which is plastic, has been used in hot soups, etc. with no adverse effects to the blender..." What about adverse effects to the pot? Lots of good recommendations, but I'm scared a stick blender will scratch my Le Creuset. Can anyone recommend one that will not?

fresh corn...to freeze or not to freeze?

If you freeze corn in volume, you appreciate any tool/gizmo that contributes to simple, fast and slick. The angel food cake pan trick prevents the kernels from flying around and is far more stable than, say, balancing each cob on a kitchen towel. As for the electric carving knife, it's my saving grace when I'm up to my a** in corn during corn season. Kind of a knife "snob", I wouldn't have one in my kitchen otherwise!

From Talk

fresh corn...to freeze or not to freeze?

I freeze 200 pints of fresh garden sweet corn every year. You can simplify the process, save frustration, and avoid slicing your fingers off by: 1) using an electric carving knife and 2) balancing the cob on the funnel-part of an angel food cake pan. Slick as a whistle! I have yet to find a corn cutting gizmo that actually works.

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

Grilled with the husk on! NO need to soak or remove the silk beforehand unless the husk is extremely dried out. Then, butter and seasalt and the shameful secret.

When it comes to corn on the cob--ONLY crappy powdered black pepper will do, in enormous stomach burning quantities. I will choose it over the finest fresh cracked in an instant. Only for corn...and sunny side up eggs.

From Talk

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

@PerkyMac I agree Duffield's is good but Zimmermans Farm on Salina Road is much better. There is nothing like getting corn still warm from the field to eat a couple hours later. It's so sweet and perfect.

From Talk

Stick Blenders...

I know, thread resurrection. But Re: special containers for using stick blenders – because a regular mixing bowl just won't do it – a wide-mouth quart Mason jar works just fine. Or even a two- or four-cup measuring cup.

Cassaendra, thanks for that "ROFL" moment on such a gray day.XD

From Talk

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

...Parmesan cheese and a 'southwestern' spice mixture are added along with the butter...it sure works for a local vendor I find at festivals and sports events (they'll sell you containers of the spice here, tho I think most of you can come up with your own)

What's your go-to dinner for one?

If I am eating by myself, I almost always make a meal that involves sauteed onion, green bell pepper and mushrooms. Whether I combine that with baked chicken breast or in a half-assed frittata is generally the only thing I have to make a decision about. I usually use goat cheese as a nice addition, and use sriracha as a condiment.

My Favorite Bagel Ever is.....

OMG I was just thinking about bagels the other day. I loved Bruegger's Bagels. I loved the bagel with all the toppings with their chicken salad and harvarti cheese (the best chicken salad I ever had), but they pulled all the Bruegger's out of Washington state (sniff sniff). I would pay for everything if someone would overnight me a big tub of the chicken salad from Bruegger's?

What's your go-to dinner for one?

this week i've made mario's pasta pomodoro twice in a row and would have made it again last night but i got home late and had an unexpected visitor.

it's so wonderful: saute some chopped garlic and a pinch of red pepper flakes until they're brown in the inevitable EVOO, then add a handful of halved sungold cherry tomatoes and stir it around for a minute. add a handful of chopped basil. throw it on top of some noodles along with some grated parmesan.

if i don't eat an enormous salad before i sit down to this, forget about it... i'll eat until i'm coma

What's your go-to dinner for one?

Dinners alone usually give me a chance to cook all the things my boyfriend hates. I once ate an entire pan of roasted brussells sprouts for dinner. Other delicious meals have included a big bowl of mussels in white wine and garlic broth, pasta puttanesca (capers AND anchovies---heavenly!), and the occasional container of cottage cheese.

Still, the ultimate dinner for one is a fat heirloom tomato, a ball of burrata cheese, and a crusty chunk of bread, with lots of olive oil and a little bit of salt. Luckily, the boyfriend agrees with me on this one, so I don't have to wait for a night alone to eat it!

From Talk

What's your go-to dinner for one?

Oh God, I usually just make enough for two, say I'll save half in the fridge, then end up eating way more than one person ever should. BAD NEWS

Your food dislikes -- items or categories or methods or recipes?

Jello? okay BUT......as vodka shooters!!!! I like poultry and pork only (except at times ham if it is too salty). My dislikes are red meat (I don't know why), organ meats, and anything gamey, but love blood sausage, headcheese, pepperoni, smoked sausage bolona, thuringer ect. Dislike all fish (except smoked salmon I like). I dislike oysters (except smoked in stuffing or once in awhile on pizza), clams and mussels. But I like scallops, shrimp, crab and lobster. I love all sorts of salsas (heat rules) but dislike the sharpness in horseradish sauce or wasabi. I dislike any raw tomatos, but love tomatos IF cooked. As for pastry I dislike bearclaws and fruitcake. Dairy I pretty much love everything. Fruits (except tomatos) I like everything. Veggies love all. Love all breads. Legumes, pastas and rice I like in small doses. As far as a certain country fare, nope I like it all, but my favorite would have to be Mexican with Vietnamese or Indian close behind. Least favorite, any country where the majority of their dishes are bland. Let you leave that up to y'all's imagination lol.

left aside for the corn lovers. Can't deal with it, myself.

From Talk

What's your go-to dinner for one?

Usually I'll have eggs of some sort if I feel like cooking. Been very partial to Nigella's Masala Omelet (from Nigella Bites, I think).

If I don't feel like cooking, it's usually bread and cheese.

Spaghetti Carbonara. My husband just isn't very taken with it, but I adore it.

From Talk

Corn on the Cob is best when ______

Boil in water until crisp but tender. No butter, no salt. It is sweet perfection just the way it is.

I really don't like butter on my corn (greasy and messy)...or salty corn for that matter. Corn was intended to be sweet!

What's your go-to dinner for one?

2 - Egg noodles, parm cheese, butter and black pepper

3 - Plain white rice with butter and salt

What's your go-to dinner for one?

Weird, I love dinner on my own, now. I used to hate eating alone, but this past year I've had to have dinner on my own a couple of times a month and I really like being able to eat what I want, when I want.

Usually I plan the meals for hubs and myself, keeping in mind his preferences. While we like the same things, I could eat Asian everyday and not get tired of it; whereas, hubs needs a few meat & potatoes meals a week.

I figure if I have to be on my own for a meal, then I only need to please myself. I allow myself to be indulgent and have a Korean feast if I feel like it.

I miss living in st louis as right down the block there was a bagal shop where they were DIVINE. they made all kinds of cream cheese and were so good. i moved away 5 yrs ago and still talk about it. I don't have a single bagel shop in the podunck town i live in now. but i have been thinking of trying to make my own but i haven't worked up the nerve.

From Talk

The everything flat bagels from Hot Bialys on Queens Boulevard in Queens. Toasted and spread with vegetable or chive cream cheese. Yum.

From Talk

My Favorite Bagel Ever is.....

Hartman's Bakery in northwest Baltimore. Crispy on the outside and soft and squishy on the inside. And to tell you the truth, I haven't had a bagel like it since they closed in 1969! And while we're on the subject does anyone bake onion bagels with real carmelized onion anymore? I've said it before and I'll say it again. Nothing has been bastardized in the last 20 years like bagels!!!

From Talk

My Favorite Bagel Ever is.....

I think H & H is way overrated. I looooooove Essa and Murray's, and I just moved to Brooklyn and have a Bergen Bagels down the street from me on Myrtle Ave. Heard excellent things, I gotta try it soon.
