5 Ways to Spice Up Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

@aSaltedYouth, my epiphany might be a couple weeks too late for you, but this afternoon I filled the bowl of pulp and seeds with water. All the seeds that were unattached floated to the top. The others just needed a bit of massaging out of the pulp. Skim them off with your hands or a soup strainer. Takes 5 minutes, tops.

Etiquette for Eating on Planes/Trains/Buses

It's important to be able to carry on one's own food of choice. I'm a prime example: I have to fly cross-country several times a year, and I have several significant food allergies. There are many times when those "$10 turkey sandwiches" aren't properly labeled, and just trusting that the ingredients are what they say they are isn't going to help when I'm sick as a dog for my entire trip.

I try to pack simple, inoffensive foods that avoid common airborne allergens such as peanuts (I was once seated next to a little girl and her mother who were very kind in asking me not to eat the complimentary peanuts from the flight attendant since the girl was so severely allergic). Almond butter and jelly sandwiches, cheese and crackers, cut fruit/veggies, granola, chocolate, simple pasta and sauce dishes, etc. Generally nothing hot, nothing stinky.

What's Your Favorite Hamantash Filling?

This year's accidental discovery is my favorite: fig jam with balsamic vinegar.

For the record, if you're using a bottle of balsamic vinegar as your rolling pin, make sure the cap is on tight, unless you're in the mood to experiment :-)

Cook the Book: 'The Best Soups in the World'

Two weekends ago I had an amazing, amazing bowl of chickpea, spinach, potato and garlic soup. Super creamy, but with no dairy. Spicy, but not too hot for the chili-powder averse. It was a hearty winter meal all in itself!

Cook the Book: Cowgirl Cuisine

My mother, a fantastic cook, has made us many many great meals over the years. The most memorable, however, was the meal gone wrong. It looked like it would be perfect-- roasted chicken, potatoes, and broccoli. The chicken was covered in sweet paprika and garlic powder, or so we thought. One bite revealed that it was oodles of HOT paprika and something we couldn't quite place. Oh that's it... ground ginger, not garlic. On both the chicken AND the potatoes. It was the only meal ever thrown away in our home. Thank goodness for pizza delivery.
