Cook the Book: 'Beyond the Great Wall'

I was about 6 and visiting PR with my parents. My mother ordered an octopus salad and while I have become an ambitious eater, I grew up with standard "American" food. The salad was packed with the suction parts from the legs, but none of the meat. My sisters and I thought it was the craziest thing we had seen.

Am I the only one on the planet who dislikes ___, or loves ___?

Sticking to the unusual ones.

I love peanutbutter, but hate peanut butter cookies. Also hate shortbread cookies, that due to an unfortunate food poisoning event in middle school.

Will not eat raw mushrooms, but can force down if they are cooked.

Love: basically everything else.

My Shocking Food Confession: What's Yours?

@ cookiepie - I have the same secret. I don't like potatoes either. Although every once in a while I will steal someone's fastfood fries (but I don't think there is much real potato in those). Also I can not stand cooked carrots. Maybe its a root vegetable thing.

On the eating side, I will buy a package of pepperoni, mini sausages or hard salami and eat the entire package as a "snack."

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'Baking Unplugged'

I store my flour in its bag in a plastic shoe box sized bin. Space being a premium I keep that box in the cabinet above the fridge. Twice, in an effort to save time, I have attempted to wiggle the box with my finger tips to encourage it out of the shelf. The first time there were no problems. The second time the lid was not securely fastened and the flour emptied all over me and the floor.

I now get a chair first.

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

I love whipped cream. If ordering dessert when out to dinner, I try to guage which item will come with the most whipped goodness. Or, if I'm really lucky, the rest of the table will order what they want and I will eat all the whipped cream garnishes. The real stuff (even without sugar) is superior to the cans, but the extra creamy reddi whip is ok and convienent, and cool whip straight out of the freezer and eaten with a spoon helps with the craving when I have to pay $4.65 for a pint of heavy cream at the grocer. I'm going to give it a strong "way".

Food Foraging

I do the same thing, but call it dinner (and sometimes after dinner when what I made wasn't what I wanted). My college roommates used to be horrified. I would start with broccoli, move to cheese, maybe a tuna melt, spoonfuls of nutella, carrots and hummus, handfuls of crackers, slices of cured meats, peanut butter sandwich and probably some chocolate.

NPR Report: Penn State Supplies Ice Cream for Inaugural Gala

@ Susquehanna - it happens to the best of us.

I love the Creamery. Only was at Penn State for 1 week of sports camp, but we loved heading there after practice. That was atleast 10 years ago, and I still remember how great the icecream was.

I can figure out BaRocky Road, but whats Bidenberry and Obama White House?

Cook the Book: 'The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook'

Squid or octupus grilled with some sea salt on top. Demitris, a great BYOB in Philly, is where I had it the first time. (Not sure if it is still there, but wonderful simple Greek food.)

absentminded kitchen disasters

I was attempting to make a stirfry in a non-stick frying pan, after heating up some oil I tossed in chopped garlic which exploded all over the kitchen. The flying oil and garlic pieces melted my "high tech" athletic shirt and shorts, the fire alarm went off, and I threw the whole pan outside onto the patio. The hot pan landed on a plastic cap which melted/ affixed itself to the bottom of the pan. My favorite pan had to be thrown out and I still wear the outfit, although it has werid gathering where it melted.

Second had nothing to do with me. A freind was in the hospital, so I brought the family some food including a container of washed and packaged greens. When they opened the plastic wrap a large moth flew out!

@toad. It sure does. As a matter of fact it's sitting in my fridge right now...

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

I loved both as a kid, but as I've grown up, something about Cool Whip has really started to freak me out. Of course I prefer homemade whipped cream, but in a pinch, Reddi-Whip is surprisingly good. And yeah, it can liven up a party pretty handily. Although...Cool Whip has a spray-topped can now too, doesn't it?

From Talk

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

Yeah, tub of Cool Whip + spoon = Happy Girl

If I'm making the real stuff, I absolutely prefer that, but as far as ready made topping? Yeah, definitely Cool Whip.

From Talk

Reddi-wip or Cool Whip: Way or No Way?

I grew up with Reddi-Whip and never Cool Whip because my father was extremely allergic to it (as in, ate it once unintentionally and was hospitalized). It might be psychsomatic but I think it gives me a headache so I still avoid it.

I prefer whipped cream from an Isi creme whipper; just as easy as ReddiWhip but so much better.

jcrisdo in orlando-where do you like to eat? Family is coming to Orlando on the 4th for a week and we're looking for good but inexpensive food like BBQ, breakfast, ethnic. Don't care much for the park food.

dbcurrie - tell me about it, sounds like the first time I got stuck behind a tractor on my way home from work, or the traffic jam on the highway the first day they put the lambs out to pasture in the spring. My favorite is the farmers that drive their tractors to the store for more beer because they're too drunk to drive a car!

I'm a mere hour or two away from you--in Mid-Misery! I'm 30 miles southeast of Jefferson City. I grew up in Idaho and Utah, then I married and moved to Boston. Big time culture shock! I loved living there. Then lived in Tempe, Arizona; El Centro, California (don't ask); and had a glorious 15 years in San Diego. I remarried, and my husband went to grad school at MU in Columbia. It has taken quite an adjustment to living in this small, rural town of 1600 people. However, we've been here almost two years and I'm still relatively sane. Don't know how much longer it will last, though. LOL!!

I like to see Canada representing! But let me add my name to the list of folk from London ON! I lived there for 13ish years, and am only down the street an hour or so now.

I am back fairly frequently and am always happy to see new restaurants open. When I first moved there in 1991, there was not many options for either fine dining or 'ethnic' dining...now I'm glad to see that there are more options of both, if only you get off the main drags (Wellington South etc)
