The Winner of 'Hell's Kitchen' and Gordon Ramsay's New 'Executive Chef'
In the episode where there were just three left (her, the guy, and the other blonde girl), she was the worst out of the three! She kept burning the meat and definitely performed the worst. Haha.
Then the part when he went out to dinner with her and the fam set off the alarm in my mind. Gordon picked her dish and made the other two chop ice... hmmm? Cute little blonde girl VS. Aggressive type A personality girl and fat catering guy. I would have picked her dish too!
But now that she is the winner its clear they are shagging.

I don't know if its the milk, the climate, the talent or what the reason is...
The gelato in Italy is leaps and bounds better than in the US.
I recently had a 10 euro portion of Pistachio and Hazel Nut in Florence and it was the most delicate and creamy thing I've ever tasted.

Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
Listen folks... I'm very good friends with the fine folks over at www.sandwichreport.com
So if anyone knows sandwiches trust me... its me?
That was an awkward sentence. Anywho, I digress...
Sourdough is perfectly acceptable for sandwiches. In fact it can be downright delicious.
The key to a good sandwich using sourdough is a) start with a loaf that has a soft spongy interior with a crusty exterior and b) use solid ingredients that stand up to the distinct flavor of the bread. Using bad ingredients with sourdough would be like pairing a prime cut new york steak with a glass of champagne fresh out of a box!
I offer this:
-Large slices of fine quality sourdough.
-Slices of medium to sharp cheddar.
-Sliced Roast Beef
-Mustard
-Horseradish Mayo
-Red Onion
-Fresh Sliced Tomatoes
-A few bitter greens (Arugula or Radicchio)
And Voila! You have a sourdough sandwich fit for a king.
Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
For centuries, the only breads available were sourdough breads. Commercial yeast is a rather new invention in relation to the history of bread. Why anyone would bad mouth sourdoughs, shows that they have no knowledge or respect for the art and science of bread baking.
Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
OK, this is the thing with sourdough. The regular yeast thats used in regular bread, such as back on the east coast and many other parts of the country (and the world) wouldnt raise the bread out in california. ( back when california was first being settled) so they had to use a different type of bacteria (yeast) to make the bread rise. It has to do with whats in the water. This yeast made the bread taste sour. Hence the name sourdough. This also made cooks make totally different recipes for Pizza etc. I love breads and pasts. So for my own taste I like pizza and breads back east like in Pennsylvania, or new york. I live in Utah now and they dont have any breads or pizzas that I like. So Im not happy (but I'll live)

Collegekid19 asked for an Italian restaurant. Del Posto is nice. I don't know exactly why, but, while there and even later, I kept thinking "nice!".
NYC Summer Restaurant Week Recommendations (or warnings)
Inspite of the pitfalls, I love RW. I find that, if I arrive early (even without a reservation) for lunch and look well put together, I almost always get seated. On the one or two occasions when this strategy failed, I did get seated at my second choice restaurant.
I agree with the praise for Danny Meyer's restaurants. I go to Gramercy Tavern during restaurant week and during the rest of the year. I always feel welcome.
Besides Gramercy Tavern, I love Aquavit and Oceana. The salmon at Aquavit is transcendent. The food overall at Oceana is subtle, beautifully presented, and memorable.
One place to avoid is Grayz. This is a midtown restaurant owned by Gray Kunz, a celebrity chef. It is located in a former Rockefeller townhouse. Aside from the historical interest, I have little good to say about the restaurant.
The staff at Grayz resented serving an inexpensive meal. For each of three courses, there were only two selections. There was loud Hispanic music. The food was bad.
What can I say? Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

My favorite was Mesa Grill, Aureole was fine but they run a summer special throughout the summer, they may not even officially participate. Trying to get into Gramercy Tavern and Eleven Madison Park is just an exercise in frustration for me. I would've called a month in advance but just forgot about it and now both places are booked solid. This year I am going to Tabla with my sister, not my original choice but like others I feel Danny Meyer does the most honorable job with RW. We'll see how it goes.

I just found this website not so long ago.
I find all of you so very refreshing and funny.
Doesn't appear to be a food snob amongst this group.
To Shnauzer_mom -- I'm with you with the vodka and pomegranate.
My humble opinion...we are works in progress and sometimes we digress.
The 11 are a good jumping off point.
Bon Sante!

That is reality tv for you: completely full of bullshit....reality television on all levels is truly the dumming down of america and as for cooking reality shows; it is shameful for the industry also on all levels and all shows...especially but not limited to the food programming shows on the Food Network.

Who really takes these type of show serious, but I must say I liked Petrozza he reminds me of a few bosses and friends...... great guys all the way around

Oh c'mon! Petrozza had WAY more experience--but Christina is definitely doing well for a young'n.
You know, I avidly looked forward to this show all season; not because the food is awesome, but because the drama tastes great!
Congrats Christina!

I have never watched this show and can't take Ramsey or the show seriously. After reading "Alice Waters and Chez Panisse," a real life story of a talented home cook who started a food revolution, I would much rather watch her do anything. Those early days at Chez Panisse would make for much more entertaining comedy.

@carosene,
you'll have better luck with turmeric if you use a small amount of it in a long cooked dish and add it at the beginning. the bitterness takes a while to cook out.
Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
i love sourdough... actually I didn't like it when I first tried it, too tangy for my kiddy tastebuds at the time. But, now that my pallate has evolved, the ones I've had recently are not even as tangy as I remember the original being... they just taste like regular white bread.
I don't know how this rates with Bay Area dwellers, but I liked the Boudin sandwiches I had the last time I was in SF.
NYC Summer Restaurant Week Recommendations (or warnings)
I highly recommend River Cafe for lunchtime restaurant week. Great view, amazing food with several different options ( not just two ). And afterward you can walk over the bridge or lay on the grass under the bridge and enjoy a lovely day.
Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
I live in Darwin, Australia, and work in a bakery and I've got to say, sourdough is my favourite type of bread that we make there. Actually it is my favourite type of anything we make there. You know a bread is good when a seventeen year old girl chooses it over a brownie or a cream bun!
Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
SF sourdough isn't ideal for everything but just because you can get a passable (not great, but passable) loaf at every supermarket on the west coast doesn't mean that it has ruined every other kind of bread. I live in NYC and don't think that the lack of good bread in local markets and bakeries is because of all the rye bread baked in the area. I think his anger is really misplaced on this one. Of course, I also have no idea who he is or why I should care about his opinion so whatever.....

Hey Collegekid,
Dunno about hazelnut (sigh.... my favorite) but look around the stores for coconut gelato in a blue container with pictures of Italy on it. It's awesome.
Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'
There are various degrees of "sour" in sourdough breads. SF Sourdough is defined by a tartness that a French sourdough doesn't have. Starters that are rye based tend to be much more bitter than starters made with wheat. All too often in commercial bakeries all across the world, when a baker makes sourdough he/she is also using a flavour enhancer that is intended to up the "tang factor". As the proud caretaker of several home grown starters, I have a few that are very sour but I also have a few that make breads that have such a subtle tang that you would never know it was a sourdough based bread. It is all about the starter...
NYC Summer Restaurant Week Recommendations (or warnings)
Restaurant Week is indeed a great *idea* but you need to be aware of the pitfalls:
- huge crowds and rushed service
- restaurants that cut corners (i.e., chicken and fish, none of the signature dishes, etc.)
- getting shut out of reservations since you didn't call 28, 30, or 31 days in advance
- the *really* high quality and popular restaurants usually do not participate
- restaurants that already have a prix fixe deal that is in that price range (Devi, Tocqueville, etc.)
I've always had a good experience at any Danny Meyer restaurant. As well as restaurants that typically don't have a large lunch crowd but are popular for dinner.
