Cakespy: Smearcase

Madame: I think so! The texture does come out to be similar to the smearcase cheese and Baltimore had a lot of German influence. I would not be suprised if at some point it was made with smearcase or something similar.

Spice Hunting: Old Bay

@Jwink Pretty much any well-stocked grocery store in the Baltimore area has the low sodium Old Bay, just ask! Mars, Safeway, Wegmans, Harris Teeter, Giant, Superfresh all carry it.

Gadgets: The Beater Blade

My Breville standmixer came with a blade like this. I like it a lot and it was great not to have to buy a $20 extra blade.

The Secret Ingredient (Wasabi): Wasabi Chocolate Pudding

I like the idea of wasabi in chocolate pudding. I am not sure what the advantage of using instant pudding and adding cocoa vs. using the kind of mix that needs to be cooked or even just making homemade is; is it just a time saving idea or is there something else to it?

I know instant pudding is supposed to be "quicker" but homemade or cooked mix pudding takes only a few minutes to make and can be eaten right away---no overnight refrigeration needed---and has a better texture and flavor. Doe the wasabi/chocolate combo not react to heat well? I've only used wasabi powder in cold dishes and chocolates.

50s Housewife Nibblers

The 1950s were hard if you actually wanted to make things that were first invented/introduced in the 1950s. I am posting recipes of those sorts of things over the next two weeks on my blog http://coconutlime.blogspot.com

The Food Timeline has some menus from magazines and books from the time. Of course, a lot of the foods are actually from earlier eras but were eaten a lot in the 1950s like deviled eggs, jello salads, dips, salads etc.

Do You Know These Regional Pizza Styles?

Adam: Matthew's is pretty much the only independent pizza place in Baltimore City proper, so we have to take what we can get. Apparently there used to be more places that sold that style but urban blight and all that pretty much wiped them out.

Does Anyone Really Love Pumpkin Pie?

I hate pumpkin pie, it is one of only three foods (cantaloupe and ketchup are the other two) that I can't even stand to smell, much less eat. Ick.

Streep to Play Julia Child in 'Julie/Julia' Movie

I'm also confused. That is the last book I'd think someone would think to make into a movie. 3/4 of it is Julie, alone, whining. Maybe the ghost of Julia comes to cheer her up?

Weekend Book Giveaway: Marco Pierre White's Devil In The Kitchen

My husband-he's a great cook but everytime we cook together he tries to take over-rechopping my garlic and onions, adding different ingredients than I what I planned on, telling me how to do things...he means well, but I do know what I am doing! I teach cooking classes! I develop my own recipes! We have to take turns in the kitchen.
