Dear Santa...

@Cary, what a great idea! Why the heck didn't I think of that?

From Talk

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa, here's my list:

1. Peace, love and understanding
2. Winning lotto ticket
3. Gas stove and matching gas furnace
4. But most of all, I want to finish my novel (which has food stuff in it) so that I can stop ingnoring my poor husband and start cooking again!

P.S. I've been ever so good this year. Except for the ignoring and not cooking parts.

Best Foodie Moment?

We had my mom and my sushi-loving brother over for dinner one night. I was serving ahi tuna, rice and salad (and I was planning to cook Mom's tuna but not ours). Bro kept yattering on and on about how we were going to have raw fish guts this and raw fish guts that. Yep, he really is just that clever. So I popped a big piece of ahi in my mouth. My brother turned an interesting shade of green and had to sit down.

It took me 50+ years, but I finally grossed my brother out! One of the proudest moments of my life.

Pasta and Beef 'Goulash'

My mom made this too! She was from Baton Rouge and she called it goulash. When my sister's boy was little he was a very picky eater. Grandma finally got him to eat it by explaining that "it's just like spaghetti but with different noodles."

Hey Serious Gardeners!

Check out www.raintreenursery.com.

We got at least one of our columnar apples from them. Those little guys take up hardly any room at all and might even grow in a big pot. We also got our 3-in-1 Asian pear from them (3 different varieties grafted onto one rootstalk)

Be aware that many fruit trees like to bear heavily one year and do nothing the next, so if you can possibly squeeze two trees in your little yard do try!

DAMN I cut my finger again!

Hmmmm, I wonder why the dishwater is turning pink .... ?

The reason why: I was washing my brand new (ca. 1979) Cuisinart blade after the first time I'd used it. Cut myself and didn't even feel it. As least medical attention was not required, but as kimbodian says, those blades are SHARP!

Exploding food and the aftermath

My brothers were always forgetting bottles of Coke (remember bottles?) in the freezer. They never did figure out that's what the oven timer is for.

When we were living in a remote area where booze was hard to come by, Mr Cobalt spent a lot of time and effort planning a special evening that involved copious amounts of gin and a blender ... and forgot about that little thing that goes in the middle of the blender lid. Cleaning that mess up wasn't so special.

And many years ago, we lost our damage deposit on some apartment because in my struggle to open a jar of chile sauce, I splattered the entire contents all over the counter, cabinets, stovetop, walls, light fixtures, floor and ceiling. I don't know what was in that shite but it would NOT wash off. Ever.

Anyone know if it's safe to eat kimchee that erupts like Mt Saint Helens when you open the jar? Just wondering.

Lets Talk Rice, What Would Your Version Say Or Be?

Haitian rice??? Please tell us more!

I love rice in all its forms. I've even learned to love brown rice if it's cooked properly -- which I FINALLY learned how to do.

What CJ said. Rice's beauty is that it's so versatile.

Korean purple rice is awesome.

How many cookbooks do YOU have? (Have, not how many do you need!

Oh dear. Acouple of years ago, my husband and some friends who know I like to cook discovered the cookbook section of Half Price Books. You all know where this is going, don't you? Hey, look what I found! It was so cheap I got you these other books too! So thoughtful, so sweet. I don't want to appear ungrateful, but since then I've been trying to keep the ever-growing Mount Cookbook in my living room under control.

FYI, cookbook avalanches can be terrifying to cats.

What music do you cook/bake to?

Hey, I've been on a reggae kick too! Only in my case it's not inspired by the weather. The high today was a blistering 63! More like a pathetic attempt to re-live my misspent youth. I also like to do my little kitchen dance while I'm cooking. There can be few sadder sights than that of a plump little 58yo white lady rockin out to the likes of Capleton, so I think I'll close the blinds and start dinner now.

I had to google hellgrammites too. Hellish!!! I'll bet that was effective.

I did the cat food sandwich thing once too. The big, scary borderline personality type guy everyone suspected called in sick for 3 days. And lunches stopped disappearing from the office fridge.

Annoying Lunch Habits of Coworkers

Once a coworker burned microwave popcorn so badly it set off the fire alarms and the entire building was evacuated. In the rain. 300 people.

Microwave popcorn is now officially banned in our building!
