La Pizzeria in Murray Hill

I like La Pizzeria and my girlfriend loves the vegetable combo pizza there. With that being said, I don't think it's "destination pizza" but a solid performer for the neighborhood.

Best soft shell crabs in NYC?

@maxcriden - where can I get soft shell crabs in NYC? I'm tempted to try and cook some up. Is the cleaning process similar to a regular blue crab?

I know they have them at the Chinese grocery store on Rt. 46. They might have changed their name, but it's at this location
Maxim's Rt 46 Oriental Food

Reconsidering Ed's Potsticker House in Chicago

@ChicagoKid - I'm ABC too and I'm illiterate, but I can understand Mandarin to a certain extent. Long is dragon, but in this case it is not. I'm sure they are written differently, but they have similar sounds.

@ChicagoKid - I've never been to Ed's but if the menu says "little dragon buns" then it isn't a very good translation. The "long" is not dragon, although it sound similar. The "long" is a cage or basket. When you order the dish in Chinese, you would ask for X long.

Blue crab in Manhattan?

You can walk along canal and you'll see the markets with the bushels of blue crab right out front.

For $6, you can get a solid sized SSC at Fish Tales in Cobble Hill - Court Street between Wyckoff and Bergen. I live in the neighborhood and they're definitely the best resource for fish, shrimp, clams, mussels, etc. Also great prepared dishes and soups. They'll give 'em to you live if you're OK with doing the dirty work yourself, or they'll do it for you there.

Great NY Noodletown in Chinatown. Especially at 3am after a long night out.

Lobster House in Chelsea Market would carry SSC at a reasonable cost (for NYC). Best fishmonger in the city, IMO.

@fuuchan - really? Have you been down here recently? I work on Grand and Bway, and can assure you that Manhattan's Chinatown is thriving. Flushing and Sunset Park definitely are definitely bigger, cheaper and by extension better, but by no means is Manhattan's C-town losing steam.

Kinda a followup to Simon's reply:

Mott Street where a great majority of the seafoody stalls are doesn't have a complete selection all the time.

Rent is steep, space is limited, old communities are aging and leaving and new communities are coming in, as much as I love downtown's Chinatown, its selection is trumped by the Chinatowns in Brooklyn and in Flushing.

The newer (relatively anyway) Chinatowns are busting with new immigrants and their food.

@max - no prob.

@clapper - the answer to most "where can I find xxx" questions, especially seafood related, is Chinatown.

Best soft shell crabs in NYC?

@clapper - Sorry, I'm up in Northampton, so I have no clue. As for the cleaning process, here are the sites I perused for some help in that regard when I made them:

http://www.cookinglouisiana.com/Cooking/Seafood/Cleaning_Soft_Shell_Crab.htm

http://www.chow.com/stories/11245

http://bitten.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/27/how-to-clean-soft-shell-crabs/

@simon - Oh, okay, cool. I just know some people, as I was previously with soft shell crabs, are sometimes apprehensive about cooking stuff that seems more intimidating than it is. Just trying to help. =)

Anyway, here's a Chowhound thread that might be useful to you: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/305964

Best soft shell crabs in NYC?

@maxcriden - I've made them. I want to know which restos serve them in fantastic or unusual ways. I love them in all styles, chinese with spicy black bean sauce, tempura battered with yuzu aïoli, Maryland style in a sandwich with coleslaw, on top of pasta with pesto and fava beans, just to name a few. Since they are coming in season right now, I was wondering if anyone could point me towards their favorite spots for having them.

Wow- thanks for all the tips, guys! I work down the street from Chinatown and I've looked into getting them down there but never followed through. Usually get an odd look when you say that you need 6 dozen. Maybe this will be the year. Lindy's sounds great too!
I second the Hadfield's recommendation- always my go-to stop when I'm passing through! And thanks Scarletini- I'm probably out of range, but good luck with the crabbing!

I've been going to Lindy's Maryland Crabs & Seafood since I was a kid. 1601 E Elizabeth Ave

If you don't mind driving down to exit 77 (parkway) in Jersey, my husband is a crabber and you won't get them any fresher. Straight off the boat, in fact. We usually just need to know the day before so we save a bushel for you. Our prices are also generally more reasonable than fish stores. You can email me at apopovics@comcast.net and I'll give you our number to call if you're interested.

Oh and in New Jersey: H Mart in Ridgefield, NJ. Very close to the Mitsuwa shopping center, so get in a quality day of grocery shopping! The seafood at the H-mart often trumps the quality of even Chinese stores.

Their razor clams and fresh oysters are delicious, by the way. Pristine in their freshness and cleanliness.

Just walk up and down Mott Street. Plenty of seafood vendors all up and down the heart of Chinatown. You can poke and prod and compare prices and quality at numerous stands.

If that fails, any supermarket, how about the big one near Elizabeth.

Or you can try the Flushing or Brooklyn Chinatowns.

We're getting into the season so big buckets of live crabs are available anywhere you go.

chinatown..... or any good italian fish market.... check out 9th ave around 39th st.....

love blue crabs.... cook those crabs in a nice marinara sauce..... and serve with some nice linguini..... mmmmm.......

Sorry if this info is too late for the crabfest, but...

I'd say the best bet for the price is in Chinatown. There's a huge indoor crab and lobster market on Lafayette between Canal and Broome...

And then there's always the popular tourist favorites - the outdoor fish markets on Canal between Mulberry and Mott. They usually have bluecrabs as well.

@Clapper - Thank you. The menu doesn't say it, rather it is my ABC (American Born Chinese) background that mistranslated it. For some reason, I thought the character used was "dragon", however I probably remembered incorrectly.

Thanks for the clarification!

Where to find good Xiao Long Bao!? (Chinese Soup Dumplings)

@pjracz: here's one. Haven't tired it, I was thinking of doing it for the Lunar New Year. A lot of work, but hey, we're talking about soup dumplings here. It's got to be worth it. Plus you know exactly what's going in them...

A good frozen brand is by PrimeFoods. They make a variety of dumplings too but only recently noticed them making soup dumplings. I usually see them sold in larger asian supermarkets for 3 bags for $11.

Joe's Shanghai is sort of hit or miss, but when they hit they hit. There is a place on Bowery just above/below where it intersects with Pell - red sign with yellow lettering, it's PACKED for weekend lunchtime and they make great soup dumplings. I've heard very good things about Flushing, any specific places?

From Talk

The OP specifically said they didn't like Joe's Shanghai.
