Raising the Bar: Wings Gone Rogue at Mad for Chicken
i know i keep reading about great these wings are but we must have hit a bad night. we were there about a month ago, and our wings only took maybe 10 minutes to come out and they were so lackluster! very depressing. we had also gotten a salad that was terrible. given all the raves, i'm tempted to try the wings again but if there is no wait i think we'll need to leave.
The Dessert Files: One Girl Cookies
good assessment. i have never been that into any of their cookies, and i am very bummed that bklyn larder has decided to carry their cupcakes which i really think are not worthwhile (and definitely not for the price).
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
thanks for the great roundup. i am surprised that redhead came up top. i was just there on friday and my chicken was just way too dry, especially the white bits. i did love the skin, and really liked the two sides also, but so disappointed on the chicken front. and was wondering why you didn't include roberta's unless they don't qualify as fancy pants. right now that is my all time favorite. they don't serve it all the time but when they do it is fantastic. http://cherrypatter.com/2009/07/robertas-this-is-our-familys-follow-friday/

Morning Buns Spotted At Colson Patisserie In Brooklyn
i have these about once a week. i just thought it was a name that colson's made up. i didn't realize it was a "thing." they are always pretty good. not too sweet though it's a bit sticky taking off their wrapper. personally, i think it's the best thing on their pastry menu.

Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
i sooo wish it were easier to eat here.
Sugar Rush: Ricotta Fritters at Al Di La
yum. these must be new, and i have not been in a while. time to go back and stay for dessert.
Sugar Rush: Cherry Snow Cone at Num Pang
i do love num pang and i am a huge fan of snow cones, and cherry is my favorite, but the day i got mine the ratio just wasn't there. way way too much ice and not enough juice so i think it may depend on the maker for perfection.
Lemon Garnish: Fish with a Twist
very cute. i'll have to do that at home.
Sugar Rush: Chocolate Brownies at Spoon Catering's tbsp
i've been curious about this place. about 5 years ago i used to get stuff from here and it was pretty good -- a little uneven, but saw that they had expanded but not eaten there. glad for the update.
Jane and Michael Stern's Four Must-Eat Foods in NYC
this does seem like a strange list. we should really take them on a new tour of nyc. i love their posts especially on the splendid table where they always seem to be right on -- granted i cannot really go check out what they're writing about -- but the pizza suggestion above definitely seems off.
Great Eats For Kids - Need Recs, Please
Hi,
We have 2 little kids and eat out a lot in Manhattan. Here are some ideas of places with decent food and kiddie options:
-Co -- for lunch. It's pricier than your usual pizza place but this could be your one special dining option during the week. 24th and 9th I think.
-hill country barbecue, is a fun spot, not at all fancy and you should be able to deal with everyone's food requirements. on 26th street near broadway i think.
-joe's shanghai -- maybe not the best chinese in chinatown manhattan but they do have good dumplings, and it can be very affordable for a group.
-e.j.'s luncheonette: this is really basic not the best food but definitely excellent for families, and kids too. there is one on 3rd avenue in the 70s on the east side, and one on the west side (i like the east side one better). french toast is decent, eggs are fine. just stick to basics and service is super fast. and an added bonus it's cheap.
-the burger joint inside the parker meridian hotel on 57th street. great for families, very good burgers. can get crowded so be sure to send someone ahead to order. and it is basically burgers and fries. don't expect much else.
-cabrito, good for mexican in the village, and big enough for a group and is petty authentic. not super cheap but tasty.
-serafina (there are a few of these, on on the upper east side near 79th street) is good decent pasta and enough room for a group and fast and easy for kids.
-penelope on lexington avenue in the 30s is a good brunch/dinner spot. you might want to try to reserve but american food is solid and there is enough room for you all.
-if you are interested in being a bit more adventuresome, there are a few great indian places on lexington avenue in the 20s. a few of them are southern indian which is all vegetarian and they can get big dosas (there is also a dosa cart at washington square park that is supposed to be good) or other fun things. you should probably do a little more research before picking a place there.
And Shake Shack is a great choice but expect to wait a long long time so either have someone order first and have the kids meet you later (there are 2 locations: -outside at Madison Square Park or Upper West Side near the Natural History Museum).
and time out kids is a good resource, but i don't always trust the recommendations for food.
hope that helps. laura
ZuZu Ramen in Park Slope, a Nice Addition to the Neighborhood
We ate there a couple of weeks ago, and while I was sooo hopeful to have this spot nearby I really thought it was very so so. The pork buns especially just were not good. As described above, the proportions are completely off and I also just didn't like the taste of either the sauce or the meat, and it was hard to find those cucumbers. We tried two of the ramens. They were ok, and in a pinch and if I were desperate I would go there for some noodles as the broth was pretty tasty. I thought that they skimped on the veggies and I also didn't like the meat. Oh well. Maybe they'll figure out how to improve things.
Sugar Rush: Doughnut Plant's Churros
i haven't had the filled churros, but i have to say that i really loved the regular ones and thought that they were not missing out on. the ones i had were just the right amount of chewiness and dough and the sugar sprinkling was excellent. so maybe the ones i got were right out of the fryer. i do imagine they don't age well.
Morning Buns Spotted At Colson Patisserie In Brooklyn
funny, the first time i'd ever seen (or heard) of one was when i went to san fran in october and stopped by tartine bakery. since then i feel like they've been popping up everywhere in nyc...i even saw them at starbucks. and then i saw them in the frozen aisle at TJ's, and now theyre sitting in my freezer waiting to be baked...
Raising the Bar: Wings Gone Rogue at Mad for Chicken
I'm addicted to Mad for Chicken!! I prefer the soy to garlic (a tad too spicy). We ordered the beer tower for kicks.
Raising the Bar: Wings Gone Rogue at Mad for Chicken
@Big B - It's kind of funny how you can see Kyochon from the window of MFC. Can't wait till it opens.
@cherry patter - Oh no, you never want to order a salad at a Korean place. It's not what they specialize in. As for it being bad, I wonder if you went during the transition period. I'd say try it again, and go later in the day. I notice the wings are better then.
The Dessert Files: One Girl Cookies
We eat with our eyes first. Taste comes next. Sometimes the taste is not what you expected from your brain cells.
Annette Aaron
We make a S'mores: Caramel on one side and Warm Valrhona Chocolate on the other side of the slightly grilled graham cracker and the marshmallow is toasted. It's fantastic and very rustic looking and if you like gooey - this does it.

The Dessert Files: One Girl Cookies
I can't speak as to the other products, but I have to say that the Lucia cookie is addictive - the caramel has a nice density and butteriness.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
I was going to say exactly that.... Henry's End. I'm a great Redhead fan (and regular), but I'm not sure why H.End is never even reviewed for its fried chicken. Totally different but one of the best in town. C'mon Ed... at least try it.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
Surprised that Henry's End in Brooklyn Heights hasn't been mentioned - lots of fans over on Chowhound. Yeah, they're known more for their wild game and whatnot, but I find their FC to be top-notch, really good spicing (clove, cinnamon, mace, lots of other stuff) - probably tied for first as my fave fancy-pants FC in the city, along with Redhead.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
Blue Ribbon and Brooklyn Bowl are really the same thing? Aren't they owned or run by the same group of people?
Im not being a hater, but the Redhead left me wanting something that wasn't there - it was a tad dry when we tried it out.
Fancy Pants I know - but really, delicious chicken - why did you leave out the Dirty Bird?
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
OMG...the pictures are as good as the reviews. Makes me want to try one of everything at each place. Now wha stretch pants to wear:-)
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
zenkichi's fried chicken is the best. not very traditional, but they put almonds in the batter and serve it with a lemon wedge. so delicious.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
Popeye's is usually great but some locations suck. I'd pay $15 for a fried chicken dinner if I knew it was going to be better than average, cause lousy fried chicken is totally inedible.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
The value thing is tricky, but I do think we were reasonably consistent. You get a whole chicken, vegetables, and pancakes at monofuku for $50, which is a very good deal. It feeds four people with leftovers At Brooklyn Bowl, the half-chicken and two not special sides for $18 probably feeds 1 1/2 people,is not nearly as good, deliciousness-wise. And you're in a bowling alley (albeit, a really cool bowling alley).
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
OMG! This article is total fried chicken nirvana for me! It is my favorite food and I am drooling!
There are some really good fried chicken recipes out there. I tend to like Southern style, chicken with great seasoning and crunch but I must admit I will eat ANY piece of fried chicken!
Fried chicken breasts are tricky because they can easily dry out if cooked too long, but my favorite pieces are wings, thighs and legs!
The prices for some of these dinners are outrageous! Fried chicken, even in an upscale setting, should be no more than $20 seriously!
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
Great survey and very informative, but I don't understand the value calculations. Momofuku gives you 1 bird for $50 and gets a high value score. Brooklyn Bowl gives you a half bird for $18 and gets a poor value score. Momofuku isn't a bowling alley, but it's not exactly Le Bernardin either. I won't bore you with other comparisons. Maybe you needed a separate "atmosphere" score.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
Great roundup... I agree with my esteemed Popeye's alumni on the need for a Popeye's litmus test :D I'm also interested in how Pies and Thighs will measure up on your scale when it re-opens once and for all - though I suppose it wouldn't qualify as fancy pants on price point alone.
The Great New York Fancy-Pants Fried Chicken Roundup
You can't forget Uncle Red's Addiction at the Chat N' Chew by Union Square!!
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
I would like to see a naked emperor, I think that would be neat and a good anecdote to share over fried chicken of any provenance and expense.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
Just had the Fried Chicken, and it lives up to all the hype!
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
Big B: How many friends/acquaintances happen to hear about your sojourns to Momofuku? Thought so. I guess namedropping is part of the privilege you pay for.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
I just tried to make a reservation. No luck! :(
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
Question: how played out and blase are "The Emperor Has No Cloths" jabs?
Answer: VERY!
::yawn::
I would pay 12.50 for a share of that spread in a heartbeat. This is a fine value for $ in NEW YORK CITY. I guess it helps that I don't have to eat like a pig to be satisfied with my expendeture. And the month thing isn't a big deal, just plan ahead! who cares! it's not a restriction, though I guess it does give people who need to complain about something something to complain about.
Sidenote: unless you are eating Popeyes (which is fine), most fried chicken in this city is pretty expensive, expecialy the korean variety.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
I personally find this silly... I've had alot of communal fun, watching the game and eating good cheap wings with friends at many cool spots... And i am sure you can find cheaper better quality fried chicken and not have to wait a month... But thats just me :/ I haven't been bit by the "I need to eat at that scene" bug.. If you somehow think its a good deal, wanna round up seven people to eat fried chicken, and put in the reservation, go for it and enjoy!
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
The reservation is not pure hype; because of the way Momofuku Noodle seats their guests, they couldn't reliably do walk-ins of more than four people or so. The low number of reservations leaves plenty of tables for their otherwise walk-in only policy.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
1month + to get a table for a fried chicken dinner? Better be damn good.
Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken Dinner
No, his restaurants live up to the hype and deliver flavor, period.
Naked Emperor, my ass. Yes, you could get fried chicken at Popeyes for a much better deal, but that is not Momofuku's peer and it has been established that the quality and taste of this is among the best in the city. You are in a nice restaurant, not a fast food joint. Compare the price to other upscale comfort food places with the city's best fried chicken: Blue Ribbon ($25) or the Redhead ($17), heck even the Korean fast food places will cost $8-9.
So yes, I'd pay an extra $3 to have superior chicken with superior condiments in an actual nice restaurant, and not be a chump.
