Le Fooding Hits Le New York

@mtingley: getting in at 6pm was great but i felt like i was racing against the clock! there were no lines and plentiful champagne!

i would have to disagree with your take on Pelé's steak. I thought the dish was simple, but elegant. I think one should appreciate the difficulty of cooking small cubes of steak to total perfection medium rare. The flavor of the sauce that he squirted on were also spot on. He managed to take finger food to a new level. Along with the Bo Ssam, it was my favorite dish of the night. I liked but did not love the rib. I found the chicken neck to be a bit awkward. Sean Rembold's corn was delish but was hard to eat on that tiny plate and i found the scallop butter to be kind of out of place. I wish that the organizers had thought to put more tables out to facilitate easy eating. But...that said, I loved the event.

New Jersey Dispatch: The Great Wall Supermarket

why did you decide that great wall is the best chinese supermarket in new jersey? it seems like what you are describing is common to all of the enormous chinese grocery stores in central jersey, although some are admittedly better than others. i would nominate asian food center in north plainfield for best chinese super market? there used to be one in edison but it closed because the strip mall was undergoing major renovations. it's practically identical to great wall and has better produce in my opinion...

'New York Times' on the Latest Culinary Fad in Paris: Burgers

the problem with the nytimes article was that all of the parisian burgers were super fancy burgers, haute cuisine burgers, si vous voulez. for more reasonable budgets and without all the pomp, i had an egg-burger conversion experience at le cafe du viaduc in the 12th arrondissement, near gare de lyon. the chef will not make you a cheeseburger even if you beg. "le burger a notre facon" comes with russian dressing, lettuce, tomato, and delicious, high-qualiity euro beef. the egg is cooked over medium so that the yolk forms a sexy bond with the burger. order it "saignant" ("rare") for the full flavor effect of the beef.

I was there on Friday, and thought it was mayhem!

I've posted some of additional thoughts on my blog, http://www.bloggingforburgers.wordpress.com

Le Fooding Hits Le New York

We got in line at 6:40pm - and into the event by 7:30pm...(also noticed that the last call line got in before us?!) We would have loved to be able to get in at 6pm, but we didn't want to pay $60 vs $30 for each of us...given the long food lines, we were glad we had each other to divide and conquer.

We loved the ribs, corn, and steak. The Bo Ssam and ice cream (bourbon vanilla) were good, though not exciting. Glad we didn't spend the money on drinks - just drank the free Pellegrino (a little flat).

Still cleaning our shoes due to the mud, but we had a great time - and it was all for a good cause!

I don't think Wylie's chicken neck was a successful dish, although I commend him for trying to go outside the box and make something strange something approachable, which I think is what the ethos behind LeFooding is about. Chang's bo ssam was delicious as usual, but nothing new or demystifying. The rib was a rib (good), but I didn't like the puree on the side, which was cold and an awkward condiment for the hot rib. The soup was something special, with the tapioca pearls in it and it hit the spot on the cold night. As for the location, the grass was soaked and muddy - why? It hadn't rained that day. They also turned the music off at around 9, which was disappointing because it was fun while it was playing. Next time, more tables, cheaper drinks, and a better space. The vibe was good though and it seemed like people were having a fun time. I don't know that the food made me think differently or demystified anything (ice cream cones for dessert?), but it was a good way to spend a Friday night.

Le Fooding D'Amour - who's going?

Friday was good...the line was really long. We got there at 7 and the line had wrapped almost 360 degrees around the building. We got inside at around 8 and there were more lines to wait in of course. BUT, the food was good. Right away they gave you cheese and bread to munch on while waiting for food. We had the Bo Ssam (delicious as usual), a satisfying soup with tapioca (the cheese casserole from Yves Camdeborde was not served, mysteriously), the pork rib (yum), the chicken necks from Wylie (disappointing), sirloin steak (small serving, but quite tender), and three drinks (the mixed drink tasted like cough syrup). My main complaint was that the grass was soaking wet and muddy - so wear shoes with rubber soles. The music was good, the crowd was fun (NY foodies galore) and though the wait for the ice cream was long, it was tasty, plus we met funny people and had a good time chatting with them. So all in all it was a great event, even though $30 for 3 small drinks is a huge rip-off, even in NYC. Have fun tonight!

A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey

Yesterday I went to White Rose in Roselle for a double cheesburger. I don't know if it's because of the change in owners or if they just had a bad night, but my burger wasn't good at all. Dried out and lacking it's usual great flavor. If I went for the first time I would be greatly disapointed and wonder what the fuss was about.

It's called "system" as an allusion to the White Castle System, which all these places were ripoffs of. White Castle was the first chain restaurant, and the idea of a "system" was so novel that they (and their imitators) boasted about it.

I grew up in nearby East Brunswick and ate here in high school (usually late night). The first time I went I asked for my burger without onions and the guy at the register called it back "one sissy burger!" Still remember that over 15 years later. Pretty funny and embarrassing.

I haven't been to the Highland Park White Rose. I go to the Roselle location. I think it's my favorite burger. I don't like onions, so I get mine without. Here, at least, they don't taste of onions if you don't order them. I like the large bacon cheeseburger (on a kaiser bun) and fries. Much more food and meatier burgers than White Diamond.

it's supposedly called white rose "system" because they employ only ex-cons in an effort to help them get back on their feet

New Jersey Dispatch: The Great Wall Supermarket

Castor:

To answer your question; I spent quite a bit of time deciding between the AFC and Great Wall and gave it to the Great Wall because of their larger fish department and seating in the prepared foods section. It is a very close call.

It won't be long until AFC opens a new store in Piscataway and that may or may not change the whole landscape.

And too those who are comparing Chinese supermarkets in Brooklyn and Queens, I think the criteria there are a bit different than in New Jersey because they are so often surrounded other Chinese shops and restaurants - especially in Flushing.

In New Jersey we expect - and we get - a real destination in itself. In the city, the neighborhood is the destination.

From Serious Eats: New York

New Jersey Dispatch: The Great Wall Supermarket

This supermarket is literally less than a minute from my house, and I absolutely love it! My mother and I are in there quite frequently and it is fantastic. We're not asian, but the people who work there and even the people who shop there frequently recommend brands and such to buy. This is awesome to see it there!
