Cook the Book: 'Modern Spice'

I would like to learn to cook Indian and Middle Eastern food. I recently started to enjoy these cuisines and loved it!

TV Cooking vs. Real Cooking

@lisapieinthesky: That's great! At first I thought it was totally weird for me to cook. I thought "who would watch me when they have the Food Network?" Even after 18 years of cooking, I still burn stuff, and I had two failed attempts at making pizza live.

@Raiders757: My channel is justin.tv/casadelun, and I usually broadcast Friday nights around 7:30 EST. Last week, I made some Vietnamese sizzling crepes. This friday, I will attempt to make gyros. I post my recipes here on www.cookingwithcasa.com for those who are interested in trying it out.

TV Cooking vs. Real Cooking

There are actually real cooking shows out there on the web. I make a meal live each week. I burned things and have set my smoke detector off most of the time when I grilled meats indoors. It is an opportunity to show people that a meal can be made in 45-60 mins (my shows run longer since I interact with chatters). You should check out the live stream on Justin.tv.

Banh Mi Update: Tam Ngo Sets Us Straight (Again) with Ba Xuyen

When I was in Texas, there was this small sandwich shop inside a grocery store that sold banh mi for $1. Yes!! $1.00. They were always packed for lunch, and people would order 5-10 sandwiches at a time. I think they raised their prices to $1.50 now. However, it wasn't overstuffed, but it had a little of everything.

Looking for a really good Vietnamese restaurant...

@alliect,
Yea, I've never eaten around Sunset Park before. Manhattan does not have good Vietnamese food, and I guess I kinda gave up searching after three years. However, I will need to trek to Sunset Park this week to try out their stuff there. Have you ever had their pho? I usually get pho or bun. Hope I won't be disappointed.

I second Xe Lua as well. The pho and bun is good. I had the carmelized salmon with the hot and sour soup. Both have really good flavor, and the fish taste fresh. If I am correct, the young lady there looks like the owner, and she's Vietnamese. It's also one of the cleaner place that I've been to as well. The waitstaff don't check on you so just give a polite wave if you need anything, and they'll bring it to you. If you want tasty vegetarian Vietnamese food, you should try Lan Cafe in the East Village. It's tasty, but the portion is small for the price that is being charged.

Learning how to cook Indian cuisine -- both Southern (no meat) and Northern (with meat) -- like people in India do. Most Indian restaurants here just don't offer food that captures that same wonderful taste experience.

Well, I'd like to be able to cook all types of cuisine at home, but if had to pick a favorite, it'd be Chinese food. That is mostly due to the fact that I havn't really been exposed to many "exotic" cuisines like Indian or thai.

Would love to learn how to cook Indian food, preferably Vegetarian and Vegan dishes, because I've learned to appreciate the cuisine through good friends and would love to recreate some of my favorite dishes, learn some new ones, and eventually get the point where I can improvise with spices and other ingredients to come up with entirely new dishes and combinations.

Actually, my New years resolution was to educate my self about indian food. Personally my unfamiliarity with the spices has been one thing holding me back a bit.
