Reality Check: Burger King's BK Toppers

Those look TERRIBLE. I have old dirty shoes that look more palatable.

Where to eat in Nashville TN

Is the conference downtown? If so, East Nashville is close by and it has a lot of great food as well. Silly Goose is amazing, Family Wash at night is a fun experience with pretty decent food, Marche is great for brunch, and Bolton's has good hot chicken (though Prince's is King).

The Farmer's Market is also basically right downtown and there's some great food in there. Jamaicaway is my favorite, but Arnold Myint (who was on Top Chef) has a new food place called AM@FM there that's supposed to be really great.

If the conference is out at Gaylord Opryland...prepare to drive for good food, because there's none to be found near there. Tourist trap city.

A Sandwich a Day: Lefse from Viking Soul Food Cart in Portland, OR

My Great Aunt made lefse, and it was simply divine with butter and sugar. Just hearing the word brings back so many wonderful sense memories. Like coffeesnob, I hadn't heard of alternative fillings but I wish I lived in Portland so I could give it a try.

Thin is now IN, Holidays are OUT

@IfYouCookIt, I went to Trader Joe's yesterday and it was a madhouse. They were out of everything I normally buy. So very frustrating.

How to store opened peanut butter jar?

Ketchup definitely goes bad. I restaurant I worked out wasn't properly rotating the ketchup (just refilling the bottles on top each time) and the ketchup bottles EXPLODED on a table. While there were people sitting at it. After that we had to empty out each bottle into a "ketchup cow" to make sure it got rotated, and we stored the bottles in the walk in.

After seeing/smelling the bubbly, fermented ketchup and aftermath, I'll never leave ketchup on the counter again.

Hangover Helper: Country Ham and Cornmeal Cakes at Pancake Pantry in Nashville, TN

@lohs, Southern Bred closed. The owners went back to doing catering only. So sad.

I've only been to Pantry once; just can't deal with the lines. My sweet potato pancakes were quite nice, if overly sweet.

Have You Ever Tried to Quit Diet Soda?

I am the exact same way, Carey. Record was four months. I always think I can always just have a taste...and then I'm doing multiple McDonald's runs a day for their $1 large deal, hopped up on caffeine and aspertame like Jesse Pinkman on blue meth.

Candy a Day: Whoppers

I can't stand regular Whoppers, but I really like the Easter egg ones with the candy shell. It gets rid of the bad waxy factor.

The Crisper Whisperer: A Seriously Delicious 'Green' Smoothie

Green smoothies are the best. I would kill for a Vitamix. My fave is banana, unsweetened soy milk, pineapple, strawberries and spinach. All fruit frozen. Flax if I'm feeling fancy (aka I have some on hand).

SE Staff Picks: What's Your Worst Hangover Food?

Eggs. If I'm hungover, I'm definitely going more towards the carby/sweet side of the brunch menu. The thought of eating an omelet makes my stomach turn.

(Oh, and that pastrami sandwich? I would MURDER it. Perfect hungover food.)

Carl Jr's/Hardee's Egg, Sausage, and Cheese Biscuit FTW

I worked at Hardee's the summer between my senior year of high school and freshman year of college. They wanted to "promote" me to biscuit maker. I turned them down -- what 18-year-old wants to get up at 5am?!

But those biscuits are pretty darn good. The ten pounds I gained attested to that.

Home Town Favorites

Nashville: Hot chicken, preferably from Prince's. It's a must.

Drinking the Bottom Shelf: Pumpkin Beer

I just tried the Blue Moon one it thought it was terrible. It just tastes like regular Blue Moon. I'll have to try the Shock Top one next.

Where to eat in/near Nashville?

Prince's (It's always cited for a reason -- it's the best. Pepperfire is good, but Prince's is still king.)
SouthernBred (Southern, meat and three-type food)
Silly Goose (AMAZING sandwiches and couscous dishes, great for lunch...and Jeni's Ice Cream is right next door for dessert)
Marche (good brunch spot, but very busy)

If you want a very "Nashville" dining experience, Family Wash is a pretty reliable good time. The food is fine -- very good shepherd's pie, both meat and vegetarian -- but the atmosphere is unique and fun, with live music and a funky setting.

(These are all in East Nashville. I am biased, obviously.)

Cheap Buzz: On the Border

I used to work at an On the Border in Tallahassee in college (worst restaurant job ever, by the way) and at least half of my tables would complain about the heat level of the salsa. I took a surprising amount of pleasure at telling them we didn't have a "mild" version.

The only drink I remember enjoying was the frozen margarita/sangria swirl.

From A Hamburger Today

Los Angeles: Burger Stand Bland at Corner Cottage

The breakfast burritos are so good I don't think I ever even noticed the burger portion of the menu.

From Slice

Chain Reaction: Papa John's Sausage Sensation

I agree about Papa John's cheese. I don't know what it's made of, but it is spongy and weird.
