I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make a hamburger cheese. Something that has the low melting point of American, but with a bit more flavor. That would be a worthy cause.

I don't live in Tucson, but my wife grew up there and I'd also love to see more on SE. There's so much great Mexican food there. My favorite is Micha's. I could eat an echilada style machaca burro every day of my life. Whare are some of your favorite spots, @missvenuz?

Cheap dinner recommendations in Cobble Hill

I missed this when it came thorugh, but here's my 2 cents!

Yemen Cuisine is amazing. There are two other spots on Atlantic that are also good, but this one is my fave. Try the Chicken Gahloub.

Building on Bond only opened a few months ago, but they have relatively cheap sandwiches, a decent burger and great ambiance. They've also got beer on tap and pretty good coffee.

Nicky's is a known commodity, but not everyone remembers it's right there on Atlantic! Great, cheap bahn mi.

Fast and Fresh Deli on Hoyt Street has killer tacos and tortas but nowhere to sit. It's only a block from my place though so grab something to eat and come on over!

Hershey's removes Cocoa Butter from candy.

cybele - thanks for all that info. As for Scharfen Berger, I visited their factory in Berkeley about a year ago and the chocolate was as delicious as ever. Of course, this was obviously coming direct from that location. They did say that no recipes or sources have changed, so I bet your suspicion is correct. Either way, I'm not going to stop eating Scharfen Berger — it's damn fine chocolate.

From Talk

Hershey's removes Cocoa Butter from candy.

Also worth noting is that not all of their products are making the switch.

Products such as Whatchamacallit, Milk Duds, Mr. Goodbar and Krackel no longer have milk chocolate coatings, and Hershey’s Kissables are now labeled “chocolate candy” instead of “milk chocolate.”
In a statement, Hershey’s told TODAY that consumers love its products and all its candies are clearly labeled. It still offers real milk chocolate in Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and its classic chocolate bar.

I got those quotes from this MSNBC article.

AHT Alum Weighs in on Park Slope Burgers

This is why I'm glad I didn't ask for anyone else's opinion before I visited these spots. I think I got lucky and missed out on most of the spice rub. I did get one bite with it and it was...distracting. Should have mentioned that.

Still, it was cooked perfectly. The beef was loose and melted in your mouth. It also wasn't too charry. Maybe it's because they knew I was coming, but my burger was tasty.

The Serious Eats Doughnut Glossary

Growing up in Minnesota, we didn't actually have a ton of local doughnut shops at the time, so we had to get them from grocery bakeries.

My local grocery store had both long john's AND eclairs - the key difference being the filling. Long Johns had none and sometimes had sprinkles or coconut topping - where as eclairs were filled evil.

Gepperths is a wonderful place owned by wonderful people. Agreed.

My favorite breakfast is Lula Cafe up in Lincoln Square- food is great. service can be touch and go, but if you're out for a slow Sunday brunch, no big deal, have a cocktail, it's the weekend :) expect a wait, and don't be surprised by all of the too cool for themselves hipsters.

Lou Mitchell's is just ok- but gives fresh donuts on the weekend as you wait and milk duds to kids

@Adam and capndesign (aka the Donald Downers): Geez! Was it really that bad? Maybe I was hallucinating or just incredibly starving, but it was BREADED and DEEP-FRIED MEAT. How bad can those things be. Though I will honor the burger purist argument (that it was anatomically not an actual burger) this assessment seems a smidge harsh. How much do you tip the person who delivers your food?

So... Megnut... you criticize $5 as being "okay" for a $10 order, but not enough for a $25 order. Instead, you suggest always paying 20%.

Little bit of math for you:
$5 on a $10 order = 50% (WAY more than you would give)
$5 on a $25 order = 20% (What you claim you would give, but if it's Greg ordering, this is, by your own account, too little.)

Shake Shack UWS Madness On Tap: Let the Frozen Fries Start Flowin' in My 'Hood

I realize that I'm going to upset a lot of people, but I ate here last week, after reading the slew of favorable reviews and truly believe that this place is a triumph of hype over content. I'm from out of town, out of state, in fact out of country, but I've been coming to your fair city for almost thirty years now and I used to rate the burgers at the late lamented McHale's as the best in town, so was interested to try this company's much-lauded offerings. I ordered a cheeseburger, medium, with fries, a root-beer and retired to wait for the pager to buzz. (Side note to the owners: when there's a long line, it doesn't sit well with the other customers when a friend of the serving staff wanders in off the street, goes up to the counter, engages three of the staff in conversation and gets his burger almost immediately while people waiting on line are ignored.) By the time I got my order, I was pretty hungry and found a place to sit and eat. What I encountered was a mouthful of heavily salted greasy sludge in a cheap bun, with the cheese as a fatty and tasteless covering. The fries were also smothered in salt, but otherwise tasteless and if I hadn't already guessed that they were frozen, the guy wheeling the piled-high cartons labeled "Frozen Potato Products" or something similar around the kitchen would have given me a big clue.

The root-beer, despite far too much ice, was actually rather good, but the rest of the meal made me feel decidedly queasy. If this is really what you consider to be a great burger, then I fear for your nation's health. A better name for this place might well be Heart-Attack Shack.

(I should mention that I also find the burgers in Le Parker Meridien's Burger Joint to be overrated, but they don't seem to suffer from the same sort of mania that this place generates and they're far, far less greasy.)

AHT Poll: What Cheese Do You Like Most on Your Burger?

This has actually been an ongoing point of contention in my group of friends. I (the tasteful minority) have always posited American as the best Burger cheese for:

a) First and foremost, its (pleasant yet non-overpowering) taste
b) Its versatility across a wide range of burgers styles (griddled, grilled, broiled)
c) Its texture and superior melting qualities
d) Its nostalgia, this is what Americans have been putting on burgers for the better part of a century (and beyond)

The real question is how would American fair in a one on one duel with Cheddar. Would the lesser vote-getters throw in their lot with the Cheddar camp and overpower its patriotic cousin?

AHT Poll: What Cheese Do You Like Most on Your Burger?

I like Haloumi, a distant, saltier cousin of feta, because it doesn't melt. You can chuck it on the grill and roast it, then put it on your burger. It's hot, has an interesting texture, but is not so strong as to overwhelm the beef. Grilled Haloumi, roasted slice of red pepper, a nice aioli, a sturdy bun. Not a burger for every day, but a nice change.

From A Hamburger Today

AHT Poll: What Cheese Do You Like Most on Your Burger?

I'm a cheddar and provolone kind of girl but since I love cheese, I am prone to tryin any kind on a burger!

I've had triple cheese burgers with different cheeses that have worked quite well; it depends on the combo of cheese.

I think I would like any cheese on a burger except for Swiss--I leave that for ham!
