Dear Slice: 'You Have Not Tasted the Best'

I find it odd that people are so critical. This isn't the NY Times (or what the NYT was 20 years ago). There's no west coast bureau chief chasing down every lead/slice. It's an accumulative experience, and the site generously incorporates notes from very unproven sources/palates, as long as their written/photographed decently. You want Oregon on the Pizza Map? Write a frackin' review!

I actually don't enjoy the pizza trucks. Warming slices up in 400* oven didn't justify paying brick and mortar prices for the slice.

Gordon Ramsay Is Not a Jerk; He Just Plays One on American TV

I don't think people quite understand. I think it's reasonable to believe that Gordon is a an ass in HIS kitchens and is also a proper, decent human being outside of them. I don't think these are mutually exclusive. If you read Marco Pierre White's memoir, White states with certainty that the environment inside of top kitchens is not friendly or politically correct, and may be considered darwinian if nothing else.

Di Fara Slice Up to $4!

Dear Adam, How about a little more contemplation about the state of the slice in general. In '04 you lamented the $2 slice. And now the Times is saying that the $3 slice is just around the corner. While I understand the complaint of many pizza shop owners, I really think the price of wheat has a lot less do with their price than their utility bills. $28/50lb bag of wheat amortized over god-knows-how-many-pies just doesn't seem to justify a $.50 price jump. Utility bills tripling in a few years however...

Subway Fares and Slices, Still Running Neck and Neck

Well, for most pizza places, especially in midtown, their most expensive ingredient is rent. Unlike the MTA, which gets its real estate for free, the old italian man in the pizza shop (or any race for that matter) has pizza cutter thin margins to work with.

First Taste: Motorino Pizza Is Awesome

Wow! For a first post on here you really slammed them ( I'ld be pissed if I was a hostess / Server here ) Is it maybe that you just don't like that style?
I've never been to either location and visually I like the look, but have heard from others that the dough was bland and that they had issues with balanced cooking. Reviews of the service in Brooklyn seem to have been less than favorable also.Maybe peoples expectations of pizzerias are equal to that of all restaurants these days? Time will tell. Did you return your food? Were you offered anything else?

From Slice

First Taste: Motorino Pizza Is Awesome

Motorino in the East Village opened this week. I had never been to the original outpost in Brooklyn but read many good reviews so we were looking forward to the opportunity to experience Motorino pizza in the City. It was hands down the worst pizza experience we have every had. You can get a better pizza in any slice shop in the City. The restaurant is small, loud and has no atmosphere. The chairs are so close together that the slightly overweight hostesses and servers have to constantly interrupt you and ask you to move your chair so they can move about the room. The service was horrible and the pizzas were worse - it took over 45 minutes for the pizzas to arrive at the table and when we questioned why our order was taking so long we were told that the computer went down. There are only about 15 tables in the shop - not sure what the computer has to do with the long wait for the pizza. The sauce on the sopressato pizza was so salty and bitter that I could not even eat it. The crust wasn't thoroughly cooked and the whole thing was watery and soggy. The yellow squash pizza with pancetta was flavorless - tasted like a mound of melted cheese and had 3 small sage leaves. Don't believe the hype and do yourself a favor - pick up a slice and save yourself the time and the money.

Visiting New York City? 7 Must-Eat Pizzas You Should Try

I lived in NY all my life, then moved to Phoenix some years ago. There is NO substitute for NY pizza, but there are some pretty good runners-up. Pizzeria Bianco being a prime example. However, we have Grimaldi's now and I will tell you that pizza frozen from a box is better! Grimaldi's pizza is like tomato sauce on a wheat thin cracker. No give to the "crust", no oil, it BREAKS when you bite it! There is another pizza joint in Scottsdale which never gets any mention, too few know it's there, but it has true NY style pizza, so put this one down on your list to try: Joe's New York Pizza. The oil runs down your arm, the sauce is great and the cheese needs a sissor to detatch it from your mouth! And they even sell slices!

@Paulie: Slice iPhone app would be nice, but right now I don't think we have the resources to devote to developing it. I did download the iPhone SDK to see what that's all about, but it might be beyond my capabilities.

@canonizer: I like the white one because it looks like the classic I [heart] NY shirts, but I've never looked good in a white tee. Glad you can pull it off yourself. I think I'm limiting to gray this time because it will cut down on the order-fulfillment logistics on my end. Once I get the box of shirts in, I have to sort by color and size before shipping. If I can take one bit of the work out of that equation, the shirts go out faster.

@canonizer, you think they didn't have computers 25 years ago?

@apizzagirl, why wouldn't you want to deliver to me? I gave 20%+ tips. Even when I got bad delivery and cold pizza. I've never stiffed anybody in my life.

THE POINT IS: just do your job. You have to be a real piece of work to do the stuff this guy did. It all evens out. You get some people who don't tip, you get some people who tip a LOT. You need to concentrate on just doing your job and stop with the little vendettas.

From Slice

Quote of the Day: Thoughts Inspired by a $1 Tip

@mooner can't speak for every delivery driver but 99% of my customers get excellent delivery from me...and even bad tippers get good (or fair) service when I have nothing better to do. I feel bad that your local drivers didn't see that you're a good tipper (of course this is the internet and you could be making that up) and provide you better service. It probably wasn't the driver's fault though. I would be willing to bet that they're getting sent out the door with semi-cold pies and with more than one delivery at a time. I'm glad that you've had better experiences with making your own pizza because I sure wouldn't want to deliver to you.

Gordon Ramsay Is Not a Jerk; He Just Plays One on American TV

I think Ramsey is a real jerk. I was watching an episode of "The F Word" on BBC America. During the opening he introduced the two new chefs in the kitchen. One he described as " ...a 22 year old American girl from Los Angeles". Then, right after saying that, one can hear Ramsey's voice overdubbed saying "Unfortunately". Like the jerk added the insult in the editing room!

I thought about if for a second and then deleted all his shows from my DVR, and all future recordings. If the Scottish twit wants to pick on American girls, he can kiss my ass. What a freakin' loser.
