Perfect Lunch for Children
Thanks for the help! I'll try some of those ideas.
Perfect picnic food
Wow, all of this sounds so good! I would say artisan bread for the sandwiches, assorted fruits, home-baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and your favorite drink.
Road Trip Snacks to Pack
little clementine oranges are always good because they dont need to be refrigerated- also try pretzel sticks but make sure to bring lots of water because they'll make the kids very thirsty. If you're going to bring candy dont pack too much because it'll make them crabby later. Also be sure to bring toys/books to entertain them. I hope you're trip is great!!

Perfect picnic food
Roasted shrimp and orzo salad, with feta cheese and asparagas.

Stackable bento boxes are great, and they open up the possibilities so you can pack anything from ratatouille to kimchi. But, for simple, clean, easy to transport picnic food that is perfectly delicious, you can't beat empanadas.
Although, if the weather is unfavorable (or even if it's not), you can always stay in and enjoy a completely different kind of picnic at home.
Cheers,

derosa's picnic looks divine.
I'd go for that!
Perfect picnic food
@Raiders - If I knew how to make good fried chicken, I would totally do fried chicken and beer! However, my fried chicken sucks...and I'm not the hugest fan of cold, leftover friend chicken. Heresy, I know, but I just don't enjoy the way the skin gets all soggy and floppy.
Perfect picnic food
A big bowl of strawberries drizzled with balsamic vinegar
Perfect picnic food
Wow, I guess with this group, fried chicken and beer are out of the question?
Perfect picnic food
Some of my favorites: chicken wings (fried, soy sauce, etc.), cold sesame noodles, banh mi, saltines+nutella+strawberries, orangina, iced tea, and definitely watermelon.
Perfect picnic food
Also, hummus and cut up veggies for dipping also travels well and is popular with most people.
Perfect picnic food
I love the bread, cheese, sausage, and wine kind of picnic...but I also like to make it a bit lighter and more interesting by bringing fruit (grapes, cut up cantaloupe), salads that can be served chilled/room temp (marinated three-bean salad, tabouleh, couscous salad with pine nuts and roasted vegetables, etc.) and hard-boiled eggs. I love the suggestions about bringing summer rolls and veggie sushi!
Perfect picnic food
I like a picnic of hard-boiled eggs (cook peeled eggs in soy sauce for pre-salted goodness), celery with peanut butter or an apple, and a nice wedge of cheese. I also have a strange fondness for finger sandwiches and sausage/mushroom/cheese pastries.
Perfect picnic food
could go european with bread, cheese, fruit, and some meat like salami.... or my favorite picnic had indian curry and puris (fried bread).
Perfect picnic food
growing up we would always have the same stuff
turkey croissant sandwiches with lots of veggies, grapes, watermelon, sun chips or pretzels, and black licorice ... mmm mmm mmm
now that i am grown though, i would prefer a hot pepper turkey sandwich with avocado, lettuce, pickles, peppers, cucumbers, spicy hummus and olive tapenade
Road Trip Snacks to Pack
An air-conditioned stretch limo with driver.
Perfect picnic food
On a related note to summer rolls, vegetable sushi! Futomaki rolls are great for picnics.

My mom used to pack me hard boiled eggs with a little packet of salt to season it. Also fruits (cling peaches, fruit cocktail, pears, etc) with cottage cheese. She also froze juice boxes so it would be cold, but drinkable at lunch time.
How about you jazz up the sandwich by making them on different breads - like a baguette, ciabatta, pita or making it into a wrap or a burrito?? I do not know how old they are, but maybe they can assemble the sandwich themselves - like pack them a tuna salad, with lettuce and tomato separately and have them build it so the bread does not get soggy. The same with hummus, tomato, grain mustard and sprouts. I also love an eggplant parmesan sandwich or even a hot dog they can assemble themselves.
And these are new... but how about these different treats:
Brown-Rice Krispies Treats
Guava Paste and Cream Cheese
Rosemary Almonds - my niece loves these!!!

Perfect picnic food
fried chicken & cheap beer, both well chilled.
Perfect Lunch for Children
I used to spread pb on a tortilla, top it with chopped dried fruit, nuts, coconut, etc, roll up, and slice into bite-sized pieces. In the summer mom would pack me strawberries with a little container of powerdered sugar for dipping. My friends liked to try to make me laugh at just the right moment so I would spew powerdered sugar clouds. I also liked salami stacks - a slice of salami, a slather of cream cheese, a slice of salami...until you reach desired height. Cut into wedges. Ham/turkey roll-ups are good (fill a slice of meat with their favorite cheese and/or veggie sticks). Try veggies & dip, cold pastas, chicken salad, egg salad (if their friends don't make fun of the smell), fruit salad, trail mix. Anything leftover from last night that is yummy cold is fair game.
If they are old enough, let the kids help make lunch. Even if it is a lot of the usual stuff, they will be more interested if they invested some time in it.
Bento boxes are a great idea.
Just don't put in love notes. So embarassing...
This thread is making me hungry.
Perfect Lunch for Children
Peanut or sesame noodles, roll ups with deli meat, cheese, hummus, veggies, etc, sushi rolls, pita chips and dip, summer rolls, crepes filled with egg and cheese for savoury or nutella, berries, bananas, or peanut butter for sweet
Perfect Lunch for Children
I second the bento. I grew up with them, and let me tell you, a peanut butter and banana sandwich with some cut up fruit or a rice ball is a whole 'nother experience in a bento box. Not to be un-PC, but I think bento boxes work better with girls past a certain age. They tend to revel in the cuteness, where boys pretty much sign-of-the-cross it away, though when they're little-little they both seem to like them.
Perfect picnic food
Summer rolls are really great, because they pack well and are easy to eat with hands.
Perfect Lunch for Children
Lettuce cups and chicken/tuna salad?
Crudite and dips...ranch dressing, hummus, PB?
Pasta salad? Or, pack a tortilla or pita bread, with the lettuce/tomato/condiments separate and let them assemble it.
I was always sent in with leftovers from dinner. And inevitably, they were GARLICKY and POTENT. My mother couldn't understand why I asked her for just a sandwich and not her delicious leftovers, LOL.
Oh, and I think I ate a buttered potato roll for about 3 years straight...and then switched to pepperoni and provolone cheese sammiches.
Road Trip Snacks to Pack
one bourbon, one scotch and one beer....
Road Trip Snacks to Pack
Peanut-butter filled pretzels, homemade granola bars, mini reeses, and homemade empanadas. Yummm!
Road Trip Snacks to Pack
I agree with all the above, but no matter what pack a few surprises for the kids. There's nothing like a treat to pick up a grumpy kid.
Another few non-food ideas though: a good book on tape is fun for everyone and makes the time go by. Your local library should be able to suggest something that will be entertaining for everyone in the car.
ALSO, my parents used to play the quarters game with my sister and me when we went on long car rides. Each of us got a few dollars worth of quarters (usually $2, I think) and everytime we wanted to ask "are we there yet?" or "how much longer?" we needed to cough up a quarter to the front seat---worked like magic at keeping us quiet.
Have FUN!
