Ginger Beer

Just made a batch of homemade ginger ale, same recipe except with no yeast. Mixed ginger syrup and lemon juice, and diluted with soda water. This sounds good, but I'm betting the ginger/citrus punch is pretty strong.

Serious Eats Goes on a Juice Cleanse: After The Juice

I file these things under "rich nation problems". While I highly doubt the claims of increased physical wellness purported by these companies (the psychological act of deprivation likely affects your own perception of "wellness", rather than your actual wellness), I think its equally misguided to jump to a place of "oh this is really bad for you, you need fats, sugars etc..." Here in America, most of us have suffcient fat reserves to where if we abstain from fats and refined sugars for a limited period of time, we'll likely get lightheaded, but overall our body will be just fine, if not lighter for it. But I think about a coworker of mine, from Eastern Europe, about 5'9", maaybe 100lbs...she's perfectly healthy, but repeatedly attests to the fact that she can't physically complete her commute without a hearty breakfast of grains, protein etc...

To be frank, I think a juice cleanse sounds interesting on a psychological level, and from a socio-economic standpoint, because its important to remind ourselves what actual hunger feels like, as it gives us a new perspective on just how privaleged we are with regards to food security.

But from a medical standpoint, I don't buy it. $200 for juice sounds like a scam to me.

Taste Test: Peanut Butter, Creamy

I can't stand peanut butter unless its mixed into a savory thai dish or something. The peanuttiness is too overwhelming and the one time I recently tried a PB&J, I actually got a toothache (how can something that sweet/sticky be considered lunch??)

In any case, my dad recently came to visit and I know he likes peanut butter so I spring for the Trader Joes Salted variety, I figured it would be a step up from regular old Jif. He tasted two spoonfuls and was basically like, um...don't ever buy this again. I see the SE voters agreed!

Cakespy: Funfetti Pancakes

Okay...this is getting a litle too intense. Snark aside, my only point is this: If you hate a recipe, by all means trash it. That's why sites like this exist, its fun. Witty criticism is one of the most entertaining aspects of foodie blog culture. But some of you aren't being critical. You're being mean, and inflammatory.

@ssimm411. I apologize for insinuating that you were some kind of weirdo for being new to facebook, and being confused by a dog in a holloween costume on a website that's supposed to be "serious". That was mean. and inflammatory.

love.this.

also, I feel like the only people who ask "is this serious eats?" are clearly new to this site. Serious eats is about food that is novel, witty, innovative, and fun. Anyone who gets hung up on words like "funfetti" has no place here. And probably hates food.

They've also got fantastic Macarons. The raspberry and the macha varieties are amazing. Really bright flavors, but not tooth-achingly sweet.

Red Rooster: Well Designed But Still Finding Its Legs

But we can't honestly have a conversaition about Harlem soul food without mentioning Amy Ruths. As someone who generally refuses to spend money on soul food (since my nana makes it wayy better), I almost never pass up a chance to indulge at Amy Ruths. The stewed cabbage? BEYOND amazing. Well worth the obligatory 1hour+ wait.

Cakespy: Pop-Tarts Ice Cream Sandwiches

I feel like the Cherry pop tarts make the best ones, and I ALWAYS toast them. In fact, the only reason the whole pop-tart ice cream sandwich thing never really appealed to me is the fact that the tarts would have to be cold...but I definitely wouldn't turn one of them down if offered to me! Some of the folks here should lighten up a bit...

Taste Test: The Best Fast-Food Breakfast Sandwiches

I'm a firm believer that nothing quite cures a hangover like a good old fashioned sausage egg and cheese McMuffin with a large sweet tea for good measure...the prospect of which is strong enough to force me out of bed before 11am just to acquire one. (or 2 for $3..even better!)
