Have You Ever Had Airline Food You Actually Liked?

Many years ago, when Northwest used to fly direct from NYC to KIX, I used to get the Japanese meal which was a Makunouchi bento. It had all sorts of Japanese goodies - fish, rice, vegetables and even cha-soba. I still remember the flight attendant asking me if I wanted a "mac-noch" or beef.

Taste Test: Japanese Curry Roux Mixes

I grew up with the Vermont brand and still use it. I cook the vegetables in chicken broth and saute the meat in curry powder first now though... I've grown up, I guess.

This was my favorite meal at school lunches from nursery school til I graduated from high school.

Love love love curry!

Panna Cotta - i'm afraid of misusing gelatin!

@dmarina, Thank you!

I will definitely try making it again with your suggestions.

Though, if I'm afraid if I can make panna cotta at home, I will be making it way too often. :)

Panna Cotta - i'm afraid of misusing gelatin!

I tried making panna cotta once and it totally separated! I'm not sure what I did wrong as I thought I followed the directions. Please let me know how your panna cotta turns out and what recipe you followed. It's one of my favorite desserts and would love to make it at home.

Mario Batali's Jarred Pasta Sauces

I've been really liking Brad's organic sauces, specifically the Roasted Garlic one. I've been getting them on sale for about $2.99 a jar and it is amazing. No corn syrup either. I'll try Batali's if I see it in the store.

Eating Alone (In Restaurants)

I was turned away from a restaurant in Dublin because I was alone. It made for a bit of a humbling experience when the whole point of going to Dublin alone was supposed to be empowering. However, in NYC, I sit at the bar and order food and don't mind it at all.

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

oh wait... i totally read the question wrong.. I don't actually eat the green beans from the can... though, maybe I will next time so I don't have to do any dishes.. hmmmmm

next time, I will read a bit more carefully! ;)

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

My comfort food from a can is Del Monte French cut green beans from the can. I drain all the water, dump them in a bowl, nuke it and eat it witht a fork. Mashed potatoes complete the comfort factor.

I was recently introduced to Fluff and that is some amazing stuff.

Otherwise, I do use jam, honey, various condiments from jars for everyday use.

Mongolian BBQ / Szechuan Hot Pot

Grand Sichuan on Canal St. in Manhattan. We had delicious hot pot there.

Speakeasies Get Their Second Wind

I do like the speakeasy concept. I go early and leave early so I don't have to deal with waiting or being a part of a scene. It is also nice to go somewhere and have a drink without people bumping into you or having to yell. Sometimes, the drinks are a bit over the top and pricey and I end up not liking the fancy concoctions anyway.

That being said, I dream about the Saramago and Smoked Horchata that Joaquin makes at Death & Co. I've had other bartenders make them there but they just don't compare.

Now with summer here, I am more interested in being outside instead of dark bar.

Potluck wedding receptions

My first reaction was "no way" until I realized one of the best weddings I went to was a pot luck bbq in Prospect Park. The "reception" was held a few days after the actual wedding ceremony and it was a blast. People came to share in the moment but it wasn't stuffy and you could come and go.

I've also been to really nice fancy weddings that I've loved as well.

It all depends on the couple and situation. I think a potluck wedding at the Plaza would be odd but in the park, it was perfect.

How School Cafeteria Lunches Differ Around the World

I went to an international school in Japan where we had mostly very good food. I think most of it was cooked at the school. The curry rice was always one of the best things they had.

Something I remember is, one day it was spaghetti and meat sauce, the next sloppy joes and then the third day "Italian delight" (a baked pasta dish with the meat sauce, corn and processed cheese). The spaghetti was good, sloppy joes were ok, the Italian delight - not so much. They sure knew how to stretch the sauce out.

I went to an American high school for two years and have to admit, really liked the rectangular cardboard pizza!
