In Talk, History of the Theta Burger

Search no more! I was born and raised in OKC and am now 67 and living in Palm Springs, CA, but my youth and teen years centered around Theta Burgers from the Split-T. That is where it was born and am saddened to read it has closed. Afficianados debate-grilled or BBQ...I like both, but definitely the original Teta Burger is my ideal. I used to have my son stop by the airport on his way back to CA from visiting his mother, stop at the Split T, get 4 foil wrapped, put them in a thermal carrier and bring them to me in Los Angeles! They were that good!

If you've never tried a Theta Burger, next time you are in Tulsa go downtown and try one at Billy's On the Square. One of the best Theta's I've ever had. The combo of sweet bbq sauce with mayo, pickles, shredded cheddar and sesame bun is amazing. Put it over the top and add bacon. Billy's is also open in the new BOK Center Arena and was my dining experience for the Eagles and Dane Cook concerts.

I, too grew up in OKC and am now 66. Bob is correct about the Split T being the source of the Theta Burger. But, even better, was the "Cesar Salad" Burger (Cesar for short). It was the most incredible culinary delight that ever rolled down the front of your face - sometimes - literally. It was a mess to eat, but it was worth it. A blend of burger, lettuce, and their dressing made it wonderful. If anyone has figured out the actual blend of spices used on a Split T hamburger, please post it. "Johnnies" was just as good as the Split T until Johnnie sold it. Since then, it is only a shadow of it's former self (my humble opinion).
