Personally, my favorite frozen custard comes from Hodgman's in teeny little New Gloucester, ME, just beyond the town where I grew up.
They're only open from Mothers' Day to Labor Day, and there's always a crowd. AFAIK, they do not ship. They don't seem to have their own website, but the Roadfood link has a lot of good info.
Joe at "bookofjoe" liked it so much that he's calling it his "official diet soda".
I haven't tried it, but I like Coke's other drinks that use Ace-K as one of the sweeteners, so I bet I would like it. I think the vitamins are just marketing hype.
Finally someone remembers the WashPost article. I can't believe that Dunlop didn't crib from Browning, even if she credits a different chef.
I'm embarrassed to admit that friends of mine have actually done this although we refer to it as the South Philly Special. They used a half of a Jim's Steak and a slice of Lorenzo's pizza - the only slice that's really big enough to house a half of a cheesesteak. They also went for more of a fold than a roll.
I guess more than embarrassed I'm bummed that I missed it. Luckily we frequently drink too much and I'm sure there will be more of these in the future.
f* ishkabibble's.. gotta use the jim's steak for this one. it too is a stone's throw away from lorenzo+.. but who am i to judge? i was only a short-timer in philly... you will certainly need a yuengling on hand to wash this beast down.
and for those who care:
genuine philly cheesesteak: 1200 cals
1 jumbo slice: 613 cals
= 1813! holy mother of christ!!!
@briank: Oh yeaah. And the Step 7: GREASY DEATH!!!
@annien: I've never actually been to Philly! Someday I shall find out.
@mlo: I'd totally eat that.
the local pizzeria in madison, wi makes a wonderful pizza fashioned after the philly cheesesteak. actually, it is basically an open face-sandwich in pizza form - white sauce for tomato sauce, lots of cheese, peppers, and steak - but i'm not complaining.
"I'll try anything once"--That's the way I feel when I'm in Philly, too.
I'm from Milwaukee... so grew up on Kopp's. How I miss it!
herrell's hot fudge sunday in allston, mass., indian ice cream from bombay ice cream company in san francisco. sabayon ice cream from mora in bainbridge, washington, and, i'm embarrassed to admit i love breyer's mint chocolate chip.
Sheer Bliss is by far the most delicious ice cream I have ever eaten. "Freedom" a concoction of vanilla ice cream with blueberry and pomegranate swirls is creamy, luscious and addictive. Yes, one bite and you will crave and dream about it. They are sold in stores and by clicking into their website www.sheerblissicecream.com, one can find a store in any state.
Nothing and I mean nothing compares to Jeni's Ice Cream in Columbus OH. They make the best ice cream using seasonal and local ingredients and they ship!
