Downtown Bakery, Not Really a Bakery But a Decent Mexican Breakfast Joint
Awesome! I usually go to Puebla Mexican a couple of blocks down for a chile relleno fix but the huevos rancheros look fantastic.

Haha, bring on the Artichoke haters in 3, 2, 1...
Personally I think Artichoke's margherita slice is the best in Manhattan, but if anyone knows of a better slice I'm always looking. Keep in mind I'm talking slices, not a twenty something dollar personal pie.
Haven't tried Motorino yet, but I'm down with San Marzano's margherita pie lunch special as a top newcomer.
Sunday Brunch: The Best Silver Dollar Pancakes Ever
just tried making these and they were a flop - literally. they puffed up on the pan but as soon as i took them off the heat they flattened out paper thin and soggy. oh well, good thing i picked up some bagels this morning.

Five Guys in Midtown Raised Prices
Sorry to ruin your politics Makanmata but rate of inflation is at a ten year low (at least). This is just a price hike on an already overpriced burger joint - a "fast food" joint I might add, though yes their fries are good and big enough to share for two. The $100 hamburger was last year, no? But I agree with you on In-'n-Out.
San Marzano Pizzeria, Where a Slice Is a Snack
Last time I was there they had a good lunch special - I think slices were $1.85 and a margherita pie was $7.25
Openings: Four-Foot-Long Pizza at Farinella
Not a bad slice. They have some interesting toppings but by the time the it hits your plate it's on the cool side. I tried their eggplant slice right after having a grandma slice from Baby O near Worth and Bowery. I would take Baby's which had far more flavor, but Farinella's is okay if you're in the neighborhood. Have yet to try Grandaisy.
Artichoke Basille's Artichoke Slice a 'New Classic'?
I dig their regular, but has anyone else noticed that the size of a slice keeps shrinking?

@swagv Are we to assume that you also like a colonoscopy once in a while?

I like a burger once in a while. But you may as well devote a site to colonoscopy at this rate.

i like places like this, 'cause they're not filled w/ yuppie douchebags that think paying $30 for an obnoxious burger is vogue.

@djai695: I'll have to try it again now. I had it a couple times early on and thought it was good but not blow-you-away good.
Openings: Four-Foot-Long Pizza at Farinella
I have to say Farinella is getting better and better as each week goes by. The owner is introducing new things to the menu daily. Fresh gnocchi alla sorrentina, rice balls, potato croquettes, and my personal favorite the napoli calzone with escarole and black olives. The place gets packed for lunch. I'd rather pay for Farinella's escarole calzone any day than to pay $5 for a DiFarra slice. I was skeptical at first, but I see excellent progress thus far, and I see an owner who is dedicated in offering people different options with his daily specials.
Sunday Brunch: The Best Silver Dollar Pancakes Ever
Made them this morning. Got better at it as I went. Taste was great. Maybe a little too creamy. Key for me was to get the skillet at the right low-med temp, not exaggerate the size (really, silver dollar sized) and then give them plenty time to set before attempting to flip them. Great test of a spatula.

Anyone who hasn't made a trip to Woodside should not be allowed to complain about tacos in NY. I will definitely hit this up tho when the trip to 75th and Roosevelt doesn't happen. Tacquria Coatzingo FTW.
Sunday Brunch: The Best Silver Dollar Pancakes Ever
@i_like_food: We tried it this morning with all-purpose flour and had good results. Having never made these with cake flour, no comparison is possible, but Heavenly Hots made with all-purpose flour were well-received. Even the teen who questioned "the dinky pancakes" ate them up.
Someday, I have to take that kid to the Stockman's Hotel in Elko, NV so he can learn the backstory on Silver Dollar Pancakes...
Motorino, Artichoke Basille's Win 'Time Out New York' Eat Out Awards
Congratulations to Motorino. It's well deserved. Their toppings combined with an excellent crush put them at the top of the heap for me. I'll let you know on Saturday morning if I think Keste's Napoletanas will give the scooter pies a run for their money.
Ciao,

@ Boomshanks: I might posit that Joe's has a better margarhita slice than Artichoke. They're square slice is almost exactly identical, except that Joe's doesn't burn the edges as excessively at Artichoke.
Motorino, Artichoke Basille's Win 'Time Out New York' Eat Out Awards
I agree, boomshanka, with one condition... when it's on. Artichoke has always been inconsistent, especially with their sicilian slices. to be fair, i haven't been in a few months, so maybe things have changed.
Sunday Brunch: The Best Silver Dollar Pancakes Ever
Is it possible to substitution all-purpose flour? Other than cake flour being more dense and fine, are there any other differences?
Sunday Brunch: The Best Silver Dollar Pancakes Ever
@bboomshanka. I'm so sorry to hear that. Adding a little bit more flour might help, as tatianak suggests above.
Openings: Four-Foot-Long Pizza at Farinella
Farinella has potential. The area has a mix of Government workers, law school students, and Citigroup workers. Slices are steep in price, and a little rubbery. While the slices look absolutely genuine in Roman style, they sometimes seem like they have been laying there. The sandwiches are served on bread that really cuts the roof of your mouth. The products are great, but they use very little buffalo mozzarella on their "buffala" slice. All in all, when it's said and done, can they survive in the Government/Financial district. I feel like if this place was in the Village would bloom better than it has in recent weeks. Broadway/Worth is a ghost town on the weekends. The staff is attentive and polite, i think most people aren't used to Roman style pie, especially in that neighborhood.
Five Guys in Midtown Raised Prices
I usually get two small burgers, small fries and a large coke and it's been something like 18 bucks. And they're raising prices?
Hint: Five Guy's, the answer to shorter lines is not to raise the prices on the one's who still come.
Besides, doing lunch in Midtown and not having delivery is just plain stupid. Changing that might help business.
The midtown one did delivery when they first opened. Then they stopped and angrily denied every having it when we called one time. It was weird.
The last time I wast there, last week, they mis-condimented my burger.
Carnegie John's cart is a couple blocks away. That's a cheaper, bigger, awesome juicy street burger served up by a good guy. I actually like going there more than 5 Guys. In fact I'll be grabbing one Monday for lunch.
San Marzano Pizzeria, Where a Slice Is a Snack
Stopped by this afternoon to take a peek -- all slices have prices now. Margherita slice for $3. Specialty pie slices for $4. The Bianca (fontina, gorgonzola, speck prosciutto, caramelized onions) I had was excellent at $4. I wish the crust had a bit more flavor, and was a little fuller and filling. It's too thin and on the crispy side for my preference.
It's BYOB and has a very upscale feeling, I wasn't even sure they did takeout until I stepped inside and saw the counter to the left of the cashier.
San Marzano Pizzeria, Where a Slice Is a Snack
I've been calculating dpi for whole pies for years, to compare the true prices of my local parlors (some sell a 16 inch as "large", others an 18 inch). There are some suprisingly large differences which aren't apparent to me by just guesstimating from the menu prices.
Never did dpi for slices, but why not, it's even more relevant (a conversion factor of 1.2656 is all that's needed to compare a 16 inch to an 18 inch whole pie).
-San Marzano slice's dpi is 17.83 cents/square inch (assuming four slices per pie)
-Average parlor slice's dpi is 7.86 cents (assuming 18 inch pie, 8 slices, $2.50 slice), or 9.95 cents (assuming 16 inch pie, 8 slices, $2.50)
For me to visit more than once, San Marzano would have to be better than just "pretty good", since one of my local parlors (the one in Flushing's Pathmark shopping center) makes a "pretty good" (I'd say great) non-destination pie.
San Marzano Pizzeria, Where a Slice Is a Snack
Geez, I'd have to eat about 20 slices of this to equal the pizza I eat ever week. That's $70!!!
Openings: Four-Foot-Long Pizza at Farinella
Farinella is yummy. Really like nothing else I've tasted here in NYC. It seems they are really trying to "keep it real" doing things the way they go in Italy. I believe keeping with the Roman style of pizza taglio, you are supposed to eat it straight out the oven or room temperature.
According to NY mag the owner is from Napoli...
Artichoke Basille's Artichoke Slice a 'New Classic'?
When they are on their game I think their Sicilian is delicious and the Margarita isn't too shabby either. I could see how some people wouldn't like the place though, especially if you are more inclined to go with a thinner slice and do not like the char that straddles (and can often cross) the line of being burnt.
Artichoke Basille's Artichoke Slice a 'New Classic'?
Wow. Truth seems to be out.
I tried this place based on the amount of hype, and I found out it to be so overrated.
Way too much topping, way too hot. Totally impossible to eat.
Artichoke Basille's Artichoke Slice a 'New Classic'?
yeah it has been, boomshanka. and the last time i had a sicilian the bottom was absolutely charred.
ps: awesome screenname. i'm a big young ones fan myself :]
