Walmart to Expand Local Produce Purchasing: Do You Agree?

I realize I'm posting twice in a row here, but this just infuriates me. People moaning that this might demean the value of the "local" label. Now that this issue is finally reaching the masses, these yuppies are worried that their eating habits will no longer be exclusive and trendy.

Please, try and show me a farmer who would rather have their food go to waste and lose money than have it purchased by a large grocery chain at a fair price.

Local food isn't about status, it's about preserving sustainable community economies and ensuring that if the global food system breaks down for whatever reason, we wouldn't all starve within three days (which is the current state of affairs).

Walmart to Expand Local Produce Purchasing: Do You Agree?

I find it really difficult to understand where these so-called "local agriculture activists" are coming from in their claims that because you are not shaking the hands of the farmers, you aren't proper local food.

These people are the root of why the local food movement is having difficulty catching on with your average Joe/Jane.

While small-scale farm markets are wonderful things (I should know, I am the assistant manager of a market in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, which is basically the East Coast's Okanagan Valley), the reality is that the only people who attend are already convinced of the importance of local food.

We need to be reaching out to those in the mainstream. The ones who eat nothing but packaged supermarket food. The people who are intimidated by farmers' markets, or feel out of place there. The people who don't live within close proximity to a fantastic haven for local food.

This battle is all about access. While these corporations may be big and mean, the plain fact is that they are the biggest purchasers of food, and that isn't likely to change before our food sovereignty crisis is averted. Therefore the only way that our farmers have a fighting chance of surviving is by a great sea-change within the industry, where it becomes easier to access local, healthy food than imported, processed food.

If you have the fortune of having nearby opportunities to access fresh whole local food directly from the hands that grew it, fantastic. Keep doing this. Tell your friends. Spread that love. But when it comes down to it, these farmers can't succeed by just feeding a few dedicated members of their community. They need the support of every person who eats!

Top This: Potato and Roasted-Garlic Pizza (à la Pizzeria Picco)

In canada, we have a chain called Boston Pizza. It's overpriced, and hardly anything on the menu interests me, but their spicy perogy pizza is enough to get me in the doors: white sauce, mozz and cheddar, bacon, green onion, and the main event: sliced potatoes that have been soaking in jalapeno oil. Finish it off with a dollop of sour cream, and suddenly the invitation to a friend's birthday celebration at a mediocre chain is no longer something worth dreading.

How to Roast a Pig on a Spit

Big Bambino: I still don't get your point. This is not a picture of a slaughterhouse, as you are comparing it to. It is simply an image of a neat, tidy, dead pig. Discussing exactly why you need to order the pig a week in advance is nothing like actually posting the images of the pig bleeding out. If you consider the image of an animal prepared for direct cooking and consumption to be graphic, then you need to loosen up!

(also refrain from looking at this picture of myself at work with a good friend of mine http://imgur.com/epjRk.jpg)
