What food/cooking items did you get for Christmas?

lots of stuff!
from my husband - cookbooks; Plenty, Cook This Now, and Nigella Christmas, and money to get some fancy ingredients!
from my parents - the New Gourmet cookbook, a giant enamel stockpot, tons of spices and condiments, a torch (regular sized, after the advice I got on SE), some cutesy kitchen stuff, and a GC for a CIA enthusiasts' class!
extended family - subscription to Food Network magazine, tart ring, pretty serving ware, kitchen towels, cocoas.

Video: Dumpster Diving at Trader Joe's

I know that TJ's regularly donated food to our weekly church program; they would be within a week, or sometimes month depending on the food, of their expiry date, and plenty of produce. it's possible they've set something up with this guy to be able to use their dumpster.

What did you eat this week?

last week for dinner, we had porkchops with pan gravy and roasted potatoes, AB's creamy mac and cheese with sauteed green beans, roast beef-provolone paninis, and home made nachos.
Lunches are sandwiches, salads, or leftovers.
This week is a little more relaxed as I have some time off work; I made a big pot of borsch last night, and we'll have South African "bunny chow" in breadbowls tonight, with chicken parmesan and sausage/cabbage bake later in the week. Oh and tons of homemade cookies!

What's on your kitchen swag gift list?

@carmason and @KatharineAnn
Thanks for the advice! My family would probably be more apt to shop in a hardware store than kitchen shop anyways, that could really work in my favor!

Taste Test: Instant Mashed Potatoes

I associate instant potatoes with either painkillers, as the only times I've eaten them as an adult have been when I had extreme strep throat, severe orthodontic issues, or surgery; or with "home cooking", as my mom made them with fat free chicken broth so they'd be a low fat side dish when I was a kid. I am not a giant fan of mashed potatoes, even real ones, after all those experiences!

From Talk

What's on your kitchen swag gift list?

A little kitchen blowtorch. The broiler on my apartment oven is really uneven, so I'd like to be able to get nice crunchy toppings on casseroles, etc.
Quite a few cookbooks, and my husband has been making noises about a KitchenAid stand mixer. I have and off-brand that is definitely adequate, but I work it pretty hard and it's showing signs of wear. He likes to notice these things and get me cool, updated "gear".

Have You Ever Tried to Quit Diet Soda?

I have cut back a lot, and given it up for periods of time occasionally, but I like it with junk food, fast food, etc; in things that those, water just heightens the weird flavors. Diet Pepsi adds a flavor all its own!

From Talk

Missing out for a lifetime thanks to one innocent mistake.

ate some very sweet barbeque sauce and had the only morning sickness episode of my first pregnancy, but I didn't know it at the time and thought it was food poisoning or the worst flu bug ever. Can't stand any hint of sweetness with smoked foods; I theorize I would like candied bacon but can't bring myself to try it.
Funny, I was actually drugged once eating Chinese food (overseas and a little sketchy) but that hasn't stopped my love of dumplings!

Thanksgiving Dinner: No Substitutions Allowed?

My family is the same way with the rolls - they want "brown and serve", with the cardboard sleeve, not fancy homemade ones, as I was expressly told this year when I was assigned to bring the rolls, a box of cereal, and soda. Oh, and whatever desserts I want, provided they're not pumpkin, apple, or pecan pies as they're already taken. Or cookies, ice cream, and candy because those are better store-bought. Screw it - I'm making two fancy cheesecakes, a mince pie for my dad, and a pecan chocolate tart. And granola in place of the cereal. But I did buy the stupid rolls.

Soda: Any Tab Fans Out There?

My mom drank this constantly in the 80s. I think it was a little cheaper than Diet Pepsi, and of course it was calorie-free. I used to sneak sips and she watered it down once and put it in my sister's baby bottle. I'd probably try it for nostalgia's sake, but I am firmly in the Diet Pepsi camp now!

Roasted Brussels Sprouts...Anyone have a good recipe?

I pan fry mine bacon fat, then steam till tender, and dress with some balsamic and toasted breadcrumbs. Even my kids like these, and I've converted many sprouts-haters too!

Thanksgiving Day Feast- when do you eat it?

We usually eat at the main meal around 2, and then dessert around 4, and sandwiches while watching the first Christmas movie of the season at 7 or 8, with a second round of desserts at 10, before everyone has to get some sleep because the shopping starts at 4 the next morning! There's 30 of us, so we rent a ski lodge condo for the holiday weekend so no one has to host and everyone can take their time and enjoy being together (and sleeping on the floor and sharing 3 bathrooms among 30 people!) Then the next night there's a big hot meal of leftovers, thanksgiving round 3.

New Salted Caramel Mocha at Starbucks

So the trick is to order the SCM, take off the top immediately, grab a spoon or a stir stick and greedily slurp the whipped cream, caramel, and salt; enjoy the salty sweet goodness and sugar high. Then drink the rest of the mocha.

From Talk

What food smell do you hate?

stinky cheese and deep fried pork cutlets, not together, though that would be epically awful.

From Sweets

Candy a Day: Nerds

Oh I love Nerds, but not the orange or purple ones - the watermelon and generic pink flavor are the best!

From Talk

Are you a serial menu changer?

The only thing I usually change is to ask for cheddar cheese instead of American.
My husband isn't usually a SMC, but he dislikes onions. I have reminded him that onions are in practically every savory dish he has ever eaten, but he still thinks he hates them. He learned his lesson this weekend when he ordered a "bruschetta salad" at a chain restaurant with "no onions". The kitchen complied - anything in the salad that had onions or was cooked with onions was left out. He looked at his plate of lettuce and chicken and asked for all the other stuff back!

From Talk

How do you like your eggs?

Eggs over easy, like most of you. That's also my kids' favorite option, we have it almost every morning over toast. Sometimes I crave a really buttery, fluffy, scrambled egg, like I grew up with; my husband likes to scramble his in olive oil and that's not bad as long as you have the right toast. I like frittatas, with sriracha. I like boiled eggs and deviled eggs and poached eggs on top of enchiladas. Just discovered hard boiled eggs in curry sauce, jury's still out on that one. But my absolute favorite is a frizzled white-runny yolk egg on top of a medium rare hamburger! I didn't realize I like eggs so much....

From Talk

epic meatloaf sandwich! Share yours.

wow some fancy sandwiches! Mine is just the lunchbox leftovers classic : a thick slice of cold meatloaf between white bread, with a layer of ketchup. And I like the meatloaf how my mom made it (brace yourselves): ground beef, onion soup mix, white bread, ketchup and and egg, baked, unglazed.

From Talk

Ever dress up as an eat to trick or treat?

I have a really strange one - when I was a kid, we didn't do Halloween, just the church harvest party. All the costumes were supposed to be biblical, but I just wasn't feelin' the whole Esther/Mary/Ruth vibe. So my mom came up with an idea - manna from the desert! I dressed in white, with cotton balls and little flakes of paper stuck on, with a sign around my neck that said "what is it?" Only a couple other church kids got it but it certainly was memorable. I won a prize for most unusual costume (ever).

Cook the Book: 'The Family Meal'

Staff meal for me always meant pizza or pastas, though the pizza were called "pies", as in "Staff Pie in 10 minutes".
I'd imagine for a more upscale restaurant there would be tons of leftovers and odds and ends to be used creatively.

From Talk

What's Your Favorite Burger Condiment?

Wickles Pickles red pepper relish. A little tangy, a little spicy, a little sweet, the ultimate condiment.

From Talk

Ok- So What's Your Favorite Sandwich ?

Could not ever pick a favorite, but tying for first place -
Thanksgiving sandwich - turkey, stuffing, mayo, and cranberry on toast.
Italian sub from my local place
Grilled cheese - soft bread, sharp cheese, tons of butter
Cold meatloaf with ketchup on white bread
