What's So Weird About That?

My weirdest childhood snack was handfuls of fennel leaves grabbed from the plants that grew wild out of the sidewalk. I loved that intense anise taste. For all I know, a dog could have peed on those plants. My mom was horrified. Also honeysuckle blossoms off of the trees and wild lemongrass and mint. I loved to eat the garden, what can I say.

Love: Hot dogs, stinky cheese (the stinkier and stronger the better), the hottest hot sauce in the world, vinegar, pickled anything, seaweed, onions, garlic (even raw, I can't get enough), tofu, vegetables, especially fibrous dark green leafies.

HATE WITH A PASSION: Banannas, raw tomatoes, eggplant, eggs, milk, melons (except watermelon), pancakes, duck, Japanese mountain vegetables, gelatinous anything, fat (especially pork fat GAG), mussels, clams, oysters, sugar in my tea, cream sauces, mayo, soda.

I was so happy when Carla won!!! I'm not even a "fan" of hers, but she seems like a genuine person, which is rare both in life and on "reality" television. It was sad to see Jeff go but please, the man's a mess as a chef. His quickfire dish looked like a Denny's appetizer basket. Barf. Fabio, who I love, totally should have gone home though. Forget the overcooked venison, that cheddar cheese salad looked BEYOND un-appetizing, It looked like trash thrown together by someone who thinks a salad isn't a salad unless it has cheese and lunch meat in it. I'm so glad they kept him tho. But dayummmmm. Scott sure as hell let him have it, no? That was some intense judgment for someone who hasn't been around all season to dish out. Let that be a lesson to you Toby Young, THAT'S how you rip someone a new one.

Fresh Fruits in Freezing Icy Snowy Weather

I have been eating pink grapefruit like a fiend. I just peel them and eat them like an orange.
I put frozen cherries and berries in everything, oatmeal, smoothies, salads, whatever....
Every apple I have eaten lately is a mealy nightmare. I can't wait for spring!!!!!!!!! I'm going insane.

Eating Well and Cheaply: Any More Ideas Out There?

All of these are great suggestions. All I can add is: buy a Britta water filter and only drink water or tea. That's what I do. Bottled drinks are a major expense, and not good for you anyway, and I don't drink coffee or alchohol (unless someone gifts me a bottle of wine). Aside from making huge pots of soup that feed me and my boyfriend for days, sometimes I make a huge batch of brown rice mixed with black beans, corn, and salsa and that feeds me for days. Or sometimes I make a huge batch of brown rice to eat with wilted kale and a protein (like marinated salmon or baked tofu), and then use the leftover brown rice to make shrimp fried rice for the next couple of days with Trader Joes frozen shrimp. There is a great recipe for shrimp fried rice right here on SE. I definitely find strecthing out my grains for the week in creative ways helps. Holly on 101cookbooks.com has amazing grain and bean recipes that will keep you fed for days. For breakfast I like to make oatmeal cooked with frozen cherries and berries to give it a beautiful color and berry flavor. I add flax seed and omega 3 oil to the oatmeal, and cook it in rice milk, so I make sure to maximize my nutritional value, while still being frugal. Good luck everyone!

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 9: 'It Amused My Bouche'

Don't hate me.....I want Stephan to win! I think he is the only person on the show with talent and he knows it, which must make him a horrible person to be around and an awful competitor, but he's a good chef and I'd eat his food! Plus I love that kind of confidence in people, even if it's ostracizing. Jamie is so glum. Smile girl! Have a little joie de vivre! And cook something else besides soup and corn (and scallops). I agree that Hosea is the quiet competition and I predict that he will make it into the final three, along with Jamie and Stephan. I like Fabio as a person, but he keeps making small mistakes that will probably cost him. Carla is also funny and charming, but I don't think she's much of a cook. Leah is a total sourpuss princess brat and Jeff awkwardly over-extends himself every time. Even when he limits himself to one concept its like, oversized or something. That HUGE hunk of salmon he made for the "tasting" in the QF?! What?! And Toby Young, words don't describe. My ears gush forth blood when he opens his mouth. Sorry....

Brooklyn Flea Indoors Doesn't Have Food?

I'm just grateful that the flea has a temporary location! It will return to Fort Greene the first weekend of April, but until then it's in DUMBO. I went during the first weekend and bought a lovely mid-century modern wood chair with mustard upholstery. I love it! But alas, I too miss the food.....nom nom nom. Glad to hear that snacks will hopefully abound soon!

I May Never Watch Top Chef Again

God. I know I'm coming into this conversation late but I just watched the episode (finally) and I don't know what made me throw up in my mouth more-Toby "Trainwreck" Young saying he wants to bone a pig (how CRASS to say in front of Dan Barber), or Leah saying "Comfy" while rubbing Hosea's chest!!!! GACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Specialty Mexican Market in NYC?

Hi ya'll. I'm originally from the Southwest but I have lived in NYC for several years now. While NY has myriad specialty markets from Spanish to Thai, I have yet to find a Mexican specialty market. I often want to cook certain recipes that call for a particular queso, or chili, or spice, that up to this point have been impossible for me to find in the city. Please help! Do you guys know where you can buy authentic Mexican produce and ingredients in NY? Even a place to buy something as simple as good queso fresco or achiote? Thank you!
