Fascati Pizza - Henry St., BK Heights.

Fascati Pizza - Henry St., BK Heights. I like this pizza. It's simple. It's NY. It's good, and I like the fact that (I think) it's a family affair - I believe the junior generation of Fascati's run the joint. I admit I have only had regular slices there, so I can't speak for the rest of their offerings, but I'd be interested to know if the famous and favorite contributor SLICE has any commentary. One last thing - I find the exterior of the place so UGLY that I almost didn't try their food, but I'm glad I got over it. As for the Chinese place next door with the same type of signage - never....

Henry's End

Henry's End....my friend, Alison, says that it's the Bklyn Heights neighborhood place you take your parents. Well, I've taken them and haven't been back since. I recall it's a bit more expensive than others around here, but it's not the money. The food is good. I just hate the atmosphere. It's too crowded and the ceiling vent is falling apart in the back. They do have a really kooky waitress - can't remember her name, but everyone knows her - she's amusing (once). If you advise your birth date, you get a free entree once a year - they even send a postcard to remind you.

Siggy's

Siggy's - also Henry St. in BH. Organic - super yum health food. I wish I could cook like this. They have everything from delicious fresh juice - my fav is the Flu Defense - to an awesome lentil soup that she makes everyday and beyond. The juice is the elixir of life if you aren't feeling well, by the way. You just need to be sure that the guy who works in the am puts in all the ingredients - my only complaint thus far with this place - he was about the give me kale, celery and orange juice for $6.75....I needed that lemon and ginger and echinacea. Anyway, it's the kind of place that, in the unusual event you get the wrong order delivered, you are still happy.

Clark's Restaurant

Clark's Restaurant, Henry St., Brooklyn Heights - my favorite local diner. The coffee is crappy, but the eggs are good. I live down the street and I even order in from there - it's embarassing to be that lazy...but it's true. Oh, and I'm not the only one - the place is mobbed on the weekends. They aren't even open all the time - they must be doing something right to have enough business to keep the hours they keep.

Henry St. Ale House

Henry St. Ale House - they renovated, and I'm not sure what that means for the food. Previously, not a place I'd consider for eating....

Despaña.

Despaña...mi amor.

I'm sure you've been to the original store in Jackson Heights, Ed. I never made the journey, but am LOVING the new Soho store.

I went over after work last night in hopes that they'd be open. For the record, I don't want to buy Spanish cheeses anywhere else ever again. The Mahon and Manchego I bought were so fresh!!!!!!!!! And the man at the checkout counter even gave me a container of membrillo (quince paste - Ed, I know you know) for free because I bought so much stuff.

Ed, will you please review the new store on your site - the merch, the bocadillos, etc? I figure you have to be in favor of this, and I want them to get lots of business and always be there. Thanks (this is fun). Next time I'll take a picture. Despaña - 408 Broome Street (just east of Lafayette). T: 212-219-5050 Hours: M-S 11-8, Sun 11-5.

A Large Spanakopita from Sahadi's - the best! Not too rich, not too salty. It's a meal in itself and only $1.20 each.

Hey Jeff,

I was in Halifax in September of last year and loved the Economy Shoe Shop on Argyle St in Halifax (good lunch place, food is fine, atmosphere is fun) as well as the Press Gang on Prince St (great food, more upscale, dinner place). For the Bay of Fundy, I recommend food shopping in Truro as there's NOTHING out there. It's truly a beautiful and a lovely break from NYC. I stayed at the Driftwood Park Retreat in Advocate Harbor - you get your own chalet and the owners, Jacques and Gloria, are lovely people. There's a deck and grill. Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend the Cape Chignecto Provincial Park - it's really untouched and beautiful.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for replying, Ed!! I'm chuckling at your response. Yes, lovely figures....something for everyone between all three of them. BUT, do you ever cook any of their recipes? Do you even watch the Food Channel? I like watching it at the gym - on the elliptical machine...

It WAS a family joint, but heard the brothers split up on awful terms - definitely a shame though because I remember other family members who'd serviced the place for years.

Anyway, still a big fan of some of the other slice options over more so in Carroll Gardens and Park Slope.

Mei Lai Wah at 64 Bayard Street has pork buns for $.70 each and a big bun for $1.40. The pork buns are available steamed (my favorite) or baked. The big bun is only available steamed, but it's good.

From the day it opened, I thought Beard Papa was the "Emporer's New Clothes" of fashionable desserts. The folks standing on line outside the store that first couple of weeks remind me of the people who attend the US Open to be seen and talk on their cellphones, and have virtually little interest in the tennis being played. Perhaps I can't shake the prejudicies formed after those early days, and I know you can't expect much for under $2 but Beard Papa may be on the cutting edge of baking technology and it totally soulless (and for my money, relatively tasteless). Give me my $2 worth of rugelah (if they'll sell you that small amount) accross the street from William Greenberg's any day, which is oozing flavor and TLC.

I just tried the pizza bianca, $1 for a large slice, at Grandaisy Bakery (the old Sullivan Street Bakery on Sullivan St.) and it was wonderful.

The sliders at Sassy's Sliders on 3rd Ave. & 86th are pretty good for the price -- $1.09 each, $0.12 extra for cheese. It's also worth noting they make their burgers from 100% ground sirloin.

I also like the custard choux at Choux Factory, especially that the custard is freshly piped in for each order. They're $1.60. 1st Ave. b/w 87th & 88th and 1st Ave. & 48th.

Finally, I haven't been, but my husband likes the rice balls at Oms/b, a little Japanese place on 45th b/w Lex & 3rd; they range from $1.50-$2.
