Norman Weinstein has some videos on YouTube if you want to preview his teaching techniques. I just typed in "mastering knife skills" in the search box and clicked away at the results!
what are you planning to eat for the fourth of july?
Wagyu shabu shabu with green tea cheescake (for dessert that is, not actually in the boiling water)
Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Combos

thanks for the afternoon snack idea!

The Neely's have ANOTHER show..WTH??
i must admit, i was excited about the Neely's first show when it came out, since i love bbq. However, since their first episode pretty much showed everything about their bbq recipes in one sitting, the following episodes ran out of "steam" (material) fast. I couldn't believe the mix of food that followed, always seemed like second-rate "experimental" recipes to me.
I'm with Markbb, FN is just pushing quantity over quality.
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
haha great story! Capsaicin in chillies is water insoluble so drinking water won't help. However, the good news is capsaicin is fat or alcohol soluble. So drinkin a glass of milk, yogurt, or even beer will help "wash" the nightmarish solution down and get your tongue ready for more! Love your stories!
Golden Clog Nominees Announced; Bourdain Skewers Self
Cat Cora haha...priceless. Guy gets my vote.
What popular foods do you hate?
chipotle...it's in everything now. Over-rated and honestly folks..it's not that "smoky"
What would be your competition food for Throwdown on FN?
Kalbi. It's all about how i massage the meat baby!! oh yeah...
The Neely's have ANOTHER show..WTH??
Well I've read all the comments and It sounds like to me that maybe there is a little predjudice going on! Noone seems to like the two shows that feature african american cooks as the host but on the same note, I personally don't really like the Neely's show either. I thought I was the only one that thought Gina's voice was annoying. Her personaility is too over the top and the slick references to sex as they are cooking is a bit too much. You almost don't want your kids to watch the show. He's not really a cook, he just does most of the chooping and order taking! She is too controlling. FN needs to can this show. My favorite is Paula Dean. She is so realistic and her husband is such a cute big ole teddy bear.
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
My sister and I did the P'haal challenge today. We each finished in about 20, maybe 25 minutes. She was sweating and her eyes were tearing. I didn't sweat but I actually had two bouts of dizziness, my hands shook a little and my ears clogged up for about two minutes towards the end. But we got through it pretty easily. Our trick was not to touch the water or any drink at ALL. The only thing we added was maybe 1/4 of the rice bowl.
MY trick was to save the chicken for the end. The sauce did NOT soak into the chicken and by the end the temperature had gone down considerably, so the chicken almost had a cooling effect.
I do NOT recommend anyone does this at the 53rd St. location - they don't have a liquor license so they gave us a coupon for a free beer...which we can redeem down on 6th St. So we have to go to the Village anyway. That was a big disappointment. They also didn't take our picture - we have to email it to the guy in the Village.

The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
did it today. so proud. still burping up heat hours later and drinking some beers. worried about how i'm gonna feel in a few hours. we didn't use yogurt or milk or anything to pad the heat except for some rice and naan. i find a nice glass of coke helps a lot, maybe its the sugar or the carbonation? water does nothing. i actually enjoyed the taste of it too, but the worst part was that it's so hot it's hard to even think straight. my friend and i would be in mid sentence and just trail off, losing our concentration. my advice to those who want to try this: be sure that you really actually can tolerate heavy spice. i eat spicy food frequently but the sheer buildup of heat with this dish is very overwhelming. also don't rush yourself but don't fill up on acoutrements like bread because it is a very filling dish. also when you do finally finish, take your time and rest a bit. we really savored our free beers and within about half an hour we felt fine but full. great way to spend an afternoon though! and i must add that the service and quality of this restaurant is really good, especially for a 6th street indian joint. i'll definitely go back for other (less painful) dishes in the future.
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
We came, we saw, we were defeated. This dish did a number on our stomachs and we had to throw in the towel. Looking back on it, I know what our biggest mistakes were, and I think that I will go back and complete the challenge one day. What we did wrong was drink way too much liquids(lots of water and 2 yogurt drinks), as well as eat a lot of appetizers. The death blow was mixing a lot of rice in with the curry. The curry has to be eaten fast. I know for next time. I did enjoy the taste though!
We did get a picture with the cook in his gasmask. That ruled. LETS GO RANGERS!
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
Me and my buddy Mike are going there tomorrow to take on the challenge. We love all that is hot and will be sure not to dissapoint. I will chronicle our tale of heat heroics next week. Wish us luck. I hope we are not asking the waiter for a fire hose to put out the flames!
The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?
The dish tastes absolutely terrible which adds to the chore of eating it. It is indeed one of the spiciest dishes I've ever eaten. I thought that being half Malaysian would help me deal with it, but I was the last of my group to finish it. Five of us ordered it, all but one finished it.
Uhm, anyone else get a burning sensation when doing the #1? Cuz I sure did... that spicy!
The Neely's have ANOTHER show..WTH??
@foodie4life ~ Let me be the first to welcome you to SE. Lots of fun and great information with wonderful folks here.
I believe the vast majority agree with you regarding Gina Neely. What were they thinking? Pat seems like a great guy and the real cook. Unfortunately, I can't watch him because she gets on my last nerve.
Anyone else think Sunny Anderson is a Rachael Ray clone? Not as loud, obnoxious and annoying, but really close. Non-stop chatter and anecdotes are not necessary!!!! I long for real chefs and hope for more Anne Burrelll and others of her talent and ability.
The Neely's have ANOTHER show..WTH??
I just found this website and I really like it. I have honestly tried to watch Down Home with the Neely's but I just can't take it. I am a big Food Ntwk fan and have my likes and dislikes. But Gina Neely drives me insane. If you've ever heard the whine of a jet engine getting up to speed, then you know how her voice can grate on your last nerve. My ears bleed just trying to listen to her. This in no way is a reflection on her cooking abilities. She's just annoying with all that cooing and touchy-feely and eye-batting. Get a room already. Sorry if my first post was a rant....but I had to vent about her somewhere. Thanks for listening.
Rachael Ray Launches Line of Dog Food: Nutrish
I am so thrilled to see so many people jumping up against poor quality pet foods! Whoo!
Iams and Science Diet are no better at all, take a good look at the ingredients. Those prescription foods that are pushed at the vet are just the same. Raw is best, high-meat content, low or no additive/by-product/grain canned food second. There are a few decent dry foods, and dogs do slightly better on them as omnivores than carnivorous cats, but this food is SAD.
Nothing makes me crazier than seeing FOOD COLORING in pet food!! That is to aesthetically please HUMANS! Dogs are COLORBLIND and I can't imagine they would care if they weren't!
I see those ads for the cat foods that "Are just like what WE eat" with veggies and rices and grains....plus too much fish in everything. UGH!
I wonder if RR even has a clue, or if she is just the perky puppet for the marketing. I contacted her site about it, big long letter last night. Doubt she sees those though, just her people.

I would never buy this simply because the twee name makes me throw up slightly.
Rachael Ray Launches Line of Dog Food: Nutrish
Well, I'm sure her heart is in the right place, but I agree...she certainly needs to be more active in the ingredient department. Also, fyi, her deceased dog's name was Boo. The new puppy is Isaboo. Every dog owner owes it to him or herself to check out the wonders of the raw diet. Dogs in the wild do not cook their food....why do we? Grain is also a minimal part of their natural diet and not at all a part of a cat's natural diet. I feed my dog a mix of raw ground turkey or beef, raw eggs (shell included), a myriad of vegetables, fresh fruit. The boy eats better than I do! The cost is about the same as that of a "premium" dry food. If you are going to do the dry routine go to Flint River Ranch online.

Nutrish - I'm surprised she didn't call it EVOO, or something other annoying thing she made up, like TB (trash bowl) or, Deeeeelish, jeese she needs to go away!

Unless she names all her dogs the same name, that dog died. I heard her talk about it on her cooking show.

hc you have to be kidding! I just reread all of the ingredients and I am shocked that you think that the ingredients "aren't too bad". They are awful.
Anyone who knows about what not to feed their dog will understand.
There are dyes in the treats, artificial everything.
Horrible.
Artificial Color (Red #40, Yellow #5 & #6, Blue #2)!!
High Fructose Corn Syrup, Propylene Glycol !!
READ about Propylene glycol!!
amazingly poor. there is no excuse for her saying she loves animals and puts her name behind this.
It may be for" a good cause" but my first good cause is feeding my own dogs real food that is actually healthy, not the garbage that the commercial pet food industry poisons them with and now Rachel belongs to that group!
Rachael Ray Launches Line of Dog Food: Nutrish
I work with some pet food regulatory (not an expert) and I would say in my opinion and judgement that the ingredients aren't too bad considering what's out there; and if it's for a good cause after all--
it's better than buying Iams:

I don't know about the dog food but that photo is proof that people and their dogs look alike. The head tilt, the little eyes...I'm mesmerized.

I like that it will help at-risk animals, but that's about it.
If she was looking to build an empire, Martha Stewart would have been a good model to follow. Right now, all her "branching out" so frenetically is just looking like desperation to cash in before, as someone said upthread, her "bubble" bursts.
Rachael Ray Launches Line of Dog Food: Nutrish
Oh my, oh my Rachel, what could you have been thinking?
These foods for dogs have the worst ingredients. No one with a brain could possibly want to feed this stuff to their dogs.
Rachel is a cook, why not teach cooking for your dogs?! Thats the way to go and get the best ingredients, no soy, no meat meal, no kibble.
This is such a mistake. I do hope everyone reads the ingredients and reads about what dogs should really eat!
There are great ways to make homemade dog food with premixes that are made from quality ingredients. Dr. Harvey's, Honest Kitchen, Sojourner.
She could have given to rescue and taught about how to "really" feed your dog naturally and healthfully. So, so sad. This is really sending such a bad message. Rachel has gotten very bad advice.

She's not branching out...she's been making dog food for years!

i'm thrilled she's trying to help animals, but i definately will NOT buy her dog food. my dog has been on science diet for a long time and before that it was Iams. maybe instead of trying to start another line of products she could just donate some money to an existing organization, like aspca. if she donates enough they may even put her face on a poster, and since it seems thats all she cares about she'll be happy.

I would say get rid of the corn and corn gluten meal. I've never had a dog that could digest corn. Our Zoe is on Nature's Variety frozen raw lamb medallions but since we're in TX, she needs a hurricane food if we can't keep hers cold. After trying varieties of Solid Gold and other premium dry brands we were stranded during Hurricane Rita and got Purina Exclusive Lamb from a feed store and she likes it and will actually eat it! So we give some to her a few times a week to make sure her tummy can take it in case we get stuck again without electricity. Thanks, just joined your site!

I do not feed my dogs anything with gluten in it corn or wheat after that pet food scare 2 years ago. Try Natural Balance. We feed the Fish and Sweet potato. My dogs LOVE it and its good for them.
